This topic is for those who want to discuss Dawn in progress. No Spoilers please. And have fun, this is a great book!

Cheryl | 1170 comments I got this from my library, so I'll be joining the discussion. It looks very interesting.

Cheryl | 1170 comments So far, it's a quick read. I really like that the aliens are so very different from humans. I find them fascinating, not repellant. I also like that the author gave the aliens distinct personalities and that they aren't all perfect or pleasant. It seems more real that way, because humans aren't all perfect or pleasant either.

I'm about half way through the book now. It seems like the first half of the book focuses on the aliens, and I'm just getting to know some of the humans now.

Here's a question for those reading: how far would you go to survive, in a similar scenario?

I would go along with it, unless I absolutely could not control a negative physical reaction to the aliens. You gotta do what you gotta do.

I have to agree. I'm a survivor, and if going along with the aliens enables me to survive then I'll do it.

Cheryl | 1170 comments I just finished the section where the group of humans are Awakened. If I were Lilith, I might want to remain with the aliens instead of joining these humans on earth. I really don't like dealing with a social pecking order and group dynamics like this.

Yeah, the humans in this book make the aliens seem an almost pleasant alternative. Give up a lot of what makes me human and not have to deal with those guys again? Sign me up!

So, I just hit the halfway point in the book (This is my 4th or 5th reread) where the action shifts from Lilith dealing with the aliens to waking up the rest of the humans. I have to say I wish Butler had stayed with the aliens a little longer. That part is really good. The second half is good too, but it doesn't have the same resonance for me.

Cheryl | 1170 comments Adelaide,

I, too, really liked the first half of the book. Perhaps there were just too many human characters in the second half to be able to know in depth? One thing I thought odd about the humans was their unbelief that these were really aliens who had rescued them. Or did the aliens do something to the humans' minds that they couldn't see what was going on?

I think that they were skeptical about the aliens until they saw them up close. I probably would be too. Also, this book was written at the end of the cold war (it even mentions US-Russian tensions) and it makes sense that they might think this was a Russian plot instead of aliens.

Cheryl | 1170 comments Oh, I see now. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Gregory Wright | 11 comments Only 20-40 pages in and I can already tell I like it. I love the pace, the atmosphere, everything so far. Reads easy, reads fast (which is right up my alley!). The alien is really cool. I am not yet to the point that the main character is comfortable around the alien, and it seems to drag on and on. "Suck it up and get use to it!" I say. :-)

Anyway, really liking it. I am picking this up right after the Shining and it is a completely different read.

Glad you are enjoying it!

Kirsten (kmcripn) I recently finished the entire trilogy. For some reason, the second 2 books read faster than the first one. I love how she characterize the aliens. What I love about Octavia Butler is how her books really make you think and reflect on human society.

In other news, this book is in development.
