message 1: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I'm still working on Dark Places by Gillian Flynn, and I have to squeeze in a library book before it's due back, so up next will be The Sins of the Fathers by Lawrence Block.

message 2: by Dawn, Dawnerys, Mother of Modding (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments How is Dark Places? I really liked Gone Girl, and was thinking of reading Dark Places..

message 3: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Umm... I'm liking it, but it definitely hasn't grabbed me like Gone Girl did.

In GG, the characters kept me on my toes. I thought I knew them, and every page I was surprised by something and just had to keep reading to see what would come next, and what really happened and what would happen.

DP is different - so far there haven't been any really shocking revelations... but I'm still interested to see what happens. It just doesn't have the same OMGREADME pull as GG did. But I say that at 40% - there's still 60% to go, and Gillian Flynn can pull some shit out of thin air and WTF with me. LOL

message 4: by Lee (new)

Lee | 939 comments Ohhh - I liked Dark Places. It was my favorite of Flynn's books.

I've started A Dance with Dragons & Seraphina. I guess I'm starting an April theme - Dragons!

message 5: by Luke (new)

Luke | 333 comments I switched over to Lies of Locke Lamora again after much insistence from a friend.

message 6: by Nan (new)

Nan (felicityk) | 245 comments I'm having the enjoyable dilemma of wondering which of the April group reads to start first...

message 7: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) I'm listening to Gone Girl now. The audio is really good.

I'm also still reading Equal Rites and will be starting The Art of Hearing Heartbeats as my at home book tonight. I need to finish it by Monday for book club.

Audrey Jane | 12 comments Luke wrote: "I switched over to Lies of Locke Lamora again after much insistence from a friend."

It has a slow start but hang on in there, it's really good. Although I was quite disappointed with the sequels...

I supposed to start Tigana for a buddy read but I'm currently in a reading slump.

message 9: by Luke (new)

Luke | 333 comments I'm just not a fan of the POV. I like getting into the characters' heads. I'll live though, and it's pretty entertaining so far.

message 10: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Jean is one of my favorite sidekick characters. I'm interested to see how the book plays out for you.

message 11: by Luke (new)

Luke | 333 comments I NEED to write like 10 reviews for the books I finished in March, but I'm habitually lazy unfortunately lol.

message 12: by Laurel (new)

Laurel I've mostly stopped writing reviews. So many people kept warning me that Goodreads reviews would end up on Amazon, I took a sabbatical, if you will. Perhaps I should start up again.

message 13: by Dawn, Dawnerys, Mother of Modding (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments My April plan...

1) Finish The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making
2) Lord of the Silver Bow
3 - 6) The Madman's Daughter, Seraphina, Shards of Honour, and Vicious
4) Continue in the Troy series (assuming I like Silver Bow)
5) Continue in Narnia series

Lot's on my plate...

This is why I review them before they come off my Currently Reading shelf. Otherwise I'd never get around to it.

message 15: by Paolo (last edited Apr 01, 2014 09:22AM) (new)

Paolo (ppiazzesi) | 166 comments I started reading Vicious this morning - just the prologue, which I liked.

I´m also like 1/3 into Altered Carbon, so the plan for April is finishing that one and then read The Island of Dr. Moreau. Then *maybe* I´ll jump into Words of Radiance.

Also, this weekend I took it easy and went through The Sandman, Vol. 1: Preludes and Nocturnes and The Sandman, Vol. 2: The Doll's House. They´re incredibly good and it was nice to take a break from novels to sneak in a couple comics.

Yeah...pretty much! :)

I am currently reading The Horse and His Boy, instead of the books that are actually on my "Currently Reading" shelf. Although, to be fair to myself, the Sisters Grimm reread is for my children, so the pacing is determined by them.

Corrected my shelf...

I feel the same way...

message 20: by Laurel (last edited Apr 03, 2014 12:28PM) (new)

Laurel I just powered through all of the Walking Dead graphic novels, and am in the mood to try a few more graphic novel series. So....

I ordered all of the Locke & Key graphic novels by Joe Hill from my library, and bought the first Morning Glories, Vol. 1 For a Better Future by Nick Spencer Morning Glories, Vol. 1: For a Better Future. I'm excited about all of them, quite frankly! I also mean to read Rat Queens, Vol. 1 Sass & Sorcery by Kurtis J. Wiebe Rat Queens, Vol. 1: Sass & Sorcery sometime this weekend. I read each issue as it came out in comic form, but it's such raunchy, good action fun I'm certain I'll love revisiting the entire run back to back!

Oh, and I'm finally getting into Blood Song (Raven's Shadow, #1) by Anthony Ryan Blood Song. Happy day!

message 21: by Kara (last edited Apr 03, 2014 03:26PM) (new)

Kara (sterlink) | 74 comments Finished Words of Radiance, which I absolutely loved! - and have been trying to read A Feast for Crows… But feel completely lost in the series! the opening has a bunch of characters I don't know and the narrator sounds crappy compared to what I was listening too. It's just not grabbing me, so… Time to finish up Steelheart! At least the narrator is easier to listen to.

Isn't it??! I love it, too.

message 27: by [deleted user] (new)

I just finished reading City of Night, the second in the Frankenstein series by Dean Koontz. Pretty cool and looking forward to reading the third, though I'm trying to space them out a little.

DavidO (drgnangl) MrsJoseph wrote: "I'm reading The Wizard of Oz right now."

Don't make the mistake I made and try to read all the sequels. After about 5 you'll wonder why Baum didn't go back and reread his own short novels so that he could keep the details straight. And you'll wonder why he seems to keep writing them despite an apparent hatred for the series.

Nyssa | 2023 comments Michelle E. wrote: "Rereading The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman. It's one of my faves :)"

I liked the series as a whole better than the individual parts, but I think The Golden Compass was my favorite.

message 32: by Sam (new)

Sam Leeves Okay, so I just finished The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms (using the app, so I can't link it, sorry). I gave it 4 stars because I think it has some really interesting ideas (nothing I haven't seen in other books, but the author takes them in a few different directions.

Not to give anything away, for me there were just a few too many ideas going on at once, but I tend to expect that from a debut novel. My only other criticism would be the prose itself. Every so often it was a little clumsy and I would have liked some more description, especially seeing that the world it was set it seemed to be quite unique.

So, by no means a flawless book, but I think there's enough going on to keep readers interested. It just might not be everyone's taste :)

I really have to read this book. I have a copy (and book2) and I've heard it's pretty good for a debut novel. My TBR is just soooo long.

I'm stopping here, lol. While I liked the book I found it...not to be what I expected. 3.5 stars Review: https://bookslifewine.wordpress.com/2...

Colleen prepared me for not being blown away so I probably had a better read. I wasn't expecting too much so I wasn't too let down.

message 35: by Emily (new)

Emily (ohmagichour) | 510 comments I just read and enjoyed The Encyclopedia of Early Earth which was a really great graphic novel. Definitely recommended if you like that sort of thing.

I think I'm about to start Finnikin of the Rock and Shards of Honour in the near term.

And of course I'm still making my way through the audio of Side Jobs: Stories From the Dresden Files - I may never "read" a Dresden book again; the audios are so good!

Oh yeah, I love the whole trilogy, Spyglass is just ONE of my faves LOL =D

message 37: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments To give you fair warning, Emily. Ghost Story was a different narrator. Spike was back for Cold Days though.

Oh, and make sure you read do not read Aftermath until after Changes. Don't even look at the page where Butcher introduces it.

message 38: by Emily (new)

Emily (ohmagichour) | 510 comments Yeah I had heard that. I just figured the audio takes me so long it would be ok. I own changes and will likely get to it in the next little bit. Thanks for the warning though for sure!!

message 39: by Emily (new)

Emily (ohmagichour) | 510 comments Also I think it's funny that this narration makes me want to watch Buffy for the first time. I am betting that for most it happens the other way round.

Speaking of, kind of, there is a Firefly reunion happening at Dallas ComicCon and I am so excited!

message 40: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments I, apparently, am not reading anything..my brain has turned to mush. *sigh*

message 41: by James (new)

James Parsons | 4 comments Hello all, I am currently going back over some classic Arthur C Clarke, then Robert Heinlein and probably Phil k Dick. Which of these authors would any of you recommend?

DoodlePanda | 506 comments I'm feeling much the same Nyssa... I have barely read anything so far this month, just don't seem to have the urge to. did read The Island of Dr. Moreau though and I quite enjoyed it :) Trying to finish the other 2 books I've started. I have been stalling reading more of Mistborn as I think it seems awesome and I don't want to ruin it by me not feeling like reading... that made sense in my head anyways...

I understand what you mean. When you force yourself to read something it seems to deaden the experience somehow - leeching all of the color and magic out of it.

message 45: by DoodlePanda (new)

DoodlePanda | 506 comments Glad it's not just me! :) Just reading random things at the moment waiting for the passion to return LOL :)
I have also temporarily lost interest in gaming so I'm a little lost in my spare time now.
The last couple of days I've just been checking out GR...

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Last night I couldn't decide between Lady Thief and Seraphina. I felt like I ought to start Seraphina, since it's a group read and since it's due back before the other... but I decided I wanted something light and frothy as a palate cleanser after being kinda bored and blech with The Sixty-Eight Rooms - so 'Lady Thief' it is.

message 49: by Emily (new)

Emily (ohmagichour) | 510 comments I've been meaning to read that one! Looking forward to hearing how it is!

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I'm enjoying it so far. I mean, there's some unnecessary angst and shit... but I knew what I was getting myself into. ;)

I'd forgotten about her annoying usage of "were" instead of "was" as a way to show lower class speech, though.
