Antonio Gallo (galloway) | 58 comments Listening and reading much better ...

message 53: by Tal (new)

Tal Heyman | 44 comments I can't really concentrate on audiobooks. I take the reading all in. I might have to use them when I'm older when I'm too busy in my house.

message 54: by Alia (new)

Alia My Kindle seems to think I read five pages a minute. It will tell me "1 minute left in chapter" when there's five pages left.

message 55: by Tobias (new)

Tobias Langhoff (tobiasvl) | 12 comments Alia, you can force the Kindle to reset your reading speed and re-learn it: https://www.ereader-palace.com/how-to...

message 56: by Alia (new)

Alia Thank you. :)

message 57: by Antonio (new)

Antonio Gallo (galloway) | 58 comments I've been reading all my life long since I learned to read and write in my father's old traditional printing shop. Since I entered the digital world and started reading on laptop, ipad or mobile, I find that I read faster and faster, but only on the surface. Rather than reading, I think I go on scanning the page. That's bad, I suppose, but I know more of the world around ... and what about you?

message 58: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (sophiesworld) I certainly don't read as fast as most people here have said! I actually listen to audiobooks mostly but there are times I don't take it all in. The reason I use audiobooks is because I find it easier for a few reasons. I've realised I don't always take it all in though. As you said in the quote, Antonio, some books need little bits reading at a time and time to digest, whereas others don't need this. I do read Kindle books on my phone. Sometimes I scan ahead or back to the chapter headings page but I did this with paperbacks too. One of the main differences is I take advantage of the highlighting and note making you can do on a Kindle. I would now consider doing this with a hard copy but before I was an adult, when I did read a lot of books, this sort of thing was basically forbidden (except in English classes).

Thank you Sophie for your idea of audiobooks. I've never read an audiobook, though I have been thinking of this recently. I believe reading an audiobook and reading the text at the same time is stronger than simply reading or listening. What do you think?

message 60: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (sophiesworld) Antonio - yes I do this sometimes, especially with a book that is harder to follow or seems a bit more special, such as 'The shadow of the wind'. I find 'chick lit' books are easiest to follow but I doubt you'll be interested in those. Audiobooks can be expensive but I'm grateful I have free membership to a UK charity which provides audiobooks due to disability and an offer at the time.

Many years back I found audio books hard to follow generally but not so much now.

message 61: by lacy (new)

lacy white (ravensandlace) I have no idea what my legit reading speed is but I can nearly finish (talking probably less than 100 pages left) a 500 page book in about 7 hours.

I remember in school, I had to retake MAP testing for reading because I read too fast and it could give me a proper score.

message 62: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jessicastevensfiction) | 1 comments If the book is well-written or interesting enough, I can easily finish a book in a few hours. Of course, that's assuming I've managed to carve out a few uninterrupted hours which are few and far between these days! I currently find myself speed reading through whatever I can whenever I can sneak a spare moment!

message 63: by Lin (new)

Lin (moonlightlin) | 37 comments For me depends on the book itself, I have read books 500 pages long in one sitting for a day, others 200-300 pages I have been reading for weeks even months.

Usually I finish a book within a week, but again it totally would depends on the book.

message 64: by Mikachuuu (new)

Mikachuuu (Mikachuu) | 1 comments Not excluding daily job/chores/activities like schoolwork, cooking and eating meals, and 8 hours of sleep, I could probably read a 15k-20k page book in a day, if the book is interesting, that is. For example, back in 5th grade (6 years ago, I'm 17) I started reading the classic Sherlock Holmes book. I could probably read around 3k in a day, but Sherlock Holmes took me two, even though it's only a 300-500 (I think, I haven't checked in a while) pages. I wasn't interested in the book, and it prevented me from reading it as often as I could, and maintain a speed. It all depends on your mood, how your feeling, and if the book interests you or not.

Extra: On this post I see a lot of competitive and/or bragging people. It's just a simple question. Don't brag to another about your pace. I know mine is pretty bad for my age, but I can't read all the time and improve it. All that really matters is if you liked the book. It shouldn't be a race. Not to mention, you have to comprehend what you read, as well.

Love the 'Extra' that you put at the end of your comment. I would say your speed rate is quite impressive; I could read 3k at fifth grade (same as you) and now (I'm 15) can hit 20k, easily, if I got the time. However, as you said, this isn't a place to brag and I'm just putting my speed rate on this discussion... :).

message 66: by kate (new)

kate v.r. I am a very slow reader. I read about 1 book a week. Mostly because I don't have a lot of time to read.

Same thing goes with my brother... Hope you find more time to read :)! One recommendation: Read on the weekend or Read when you're supposed to be studying (What I do!)

message 68: by kate (new)

kate v.r. Haha I already do that but sometimes I get distracted with video games or Netflix

Well, I liked it, but I recently heard some people saying that it's not good. Personally, I'd recommend it!

Love long books, but it tends to get boring at the middle and sometimes it's hard to start up... Really love 500-700 page books.

When I read, sometimes I have to tell myself to slow down and enjoy the book I am reading...

message 86: by Doris (new)

Doris My reading speed has slowed because I am focusing more on details in the book and like to look things up. Also I have less reading time. I find myself wanting to speed through books again to read more books but I want to enjoy them as well.

message 87: by Jojobean (new)

Jojobean It really depends on my reading mood. I've read 400 page books in a day and other times I've read 200 page books over a few days. On average I can read 100 pages in 1 hour.

message 88: by Bree (new)

Bree G | 8 comments If I read in my head, I read quickly. I still read fast when I read aloud though, however it really just depends on how much I like the book.

message 89: by Anna (new)

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 92 comments Slow, very slow. And I appreciate every word - so long as it is well-written. I've just finished a book written by Abigail Bok and there were so many good turns of phrase that I kept stopping to think them through.

But I can read very fast if I want or need to. At college I took a speed-reading course. So I can do it. It's not good for fiction but great for the newspaper.

So I'm a bit like Bree.

message 90: by Marina (new)

Marina (themarinabox) | 1 comments Generally, I am a slow reader but sometimes, I come across a book that I just can't seem to put it down and will finish it in 2 days. Besides that, it will take me a while to finish a book if I take my time and I personally don't mind.

Obesehomingpigeon | 6 comments It depends on the book, if it's a first in a series, I'll read it in an hour. If I deemed the series good enough to read the sequel, I'll take my time.

message 92: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Kohler (betterlatethanneverbookclub) I definitely can't read an entire book in an hour.

It really depends on the story. There are books I've read in a day- there are books that I needed time to mull over and process as I go.

Since I read for fun- I have no deadline- so I just let it happen naturally.

message 93: by Lexii (new)

Lexii (lexiicole133) | 6 comments I can read 50 pages in a hour which I feel is really slow but I find if I try to read faster I don’t remember what I’ve read.

message 94: by Mystic Orange (new)

Mystic Orange (Rumell) (rkrespectedmember) | 2543 comments It sometimes depends on my speed or mood.

Jaxon(Jax)[They-He] If I really am into a book I can finish it in 1 day, that's if I dont get distracted

message 96: by Matthew (new)

Matthew Cross it depends if the flat is nice and quite , no tvs on no kids watching the ipads all day on full volume with all that 20 to 30 pages in a read until I think I cant concentrate on this . but last night with the step kids in bed I was reading for an hour and read about 60 or so pages as Rumell says it also depends on your mood , a couple of days ago I felt really happy and was about to do some reading when some one got me really upset and I really don't like to read when im upset

message 97: by Aqsa (new)

Aqsa (her_747) | 570 comments Depends on the book and my mood. I can read fast and finish big books in a sitting or 2. I like to read Classics and urdu books slowly and take my time. I enjoy them more that way.
