Paul  Perry (pezski) | 233 comments I refer you to Red Harvest, 1929, not to mention a lot of the hard-boiled crime writing that followed it.

The level and detail in the violence ebbs and flows over time and, in my opinion, it's only 'too much' if it's inappropriate for the story, or pornographic in the sense of revelling in the violence. Not that I especially want to read uber-violent prose, but it's equally inappropriate to write about violent things and gloss over the bloodshed.
