Scot | 639 comments I am looking for a good atmospheric horror read. I loved Seed and the way it was written just screamed to me Deep South. I would prefer another Southern read but really any good horror with mountains of atmosphere would be appreciated. Any recommendations?

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) The Amulet by Michael McDowell actually I've been told any of his stuff is great for that.

Char | 17459 comments The Wicked

The Rain Dancers (Not Southern, but definitely atmospheric!)

Dead Sea (Atmospheric, not Southern. A small boat at sea amidst fog like has never been seen before.)

Pretty much anything by Greg Gifune is guaranteed to be atmospheric.

Scot | 639 comments Cool. Thanks, everybody. I will check them out this weekend.

James | 168 comments Thanks for always spreading the word about my work, Charlene. You're so good to me. :)

I'd recommend just about anything by Adam Nevill -- while he's British, not from the (American) South, his stuff is extremely atmospheric. It's also some of the creepiest fiction I've ever read.

I'd highly recommend the short fiction of Nancy Collins, for the Southern tone. Pick up a copy of KNUCKLES & TALES -- you won't be disappointed.

Rebecca Patrick-Howard (rebeccaphoward) | 8 comments I'd like to recommend my own book, but that sounds rude. :-) I'm also into atmospheric horror, especially when it concerns haunted houses. I'm from the south and tried to create a southern vibe into my book, WINDWOOD FARM. If you're into historical preservation, haunted houses, and mysteries then you might like it.

It's been awhile since I read a good atmospheric horror. I'm loving these suggestions. Keep them coming! I'm going to try a few out myself!

Sounds rude, but you went and did it anyway, right?

Here's a little light reading for you.

Holly (goldikova) I just put a couple of Adam Nevill books on my Amazon "To Buy" list yesterday. You all just affirmed my decision.....I probably would have waited longer to get them if you hadn't praised them here; so I'll be reading them sooner than I originally planned.

I have never read any Greg Gifune before, but now I have checked out his page, and his books, it really looks like something I would enjoy - so I just bought The Rain Dancers and am diving in.... BYE!!

Seriously. Greg and James should both be on the shelves of every horror fan.

Keith Blackmore | 18 comments I thought Steve Vernon's "Devil Tree" was pretty good. Very dark, brooding. It oozes darkness.

Not deep south tho, sorry.

I thought that this name sounded familiar, then I remembered The Bleeding Season sitting on my shelf, nice!

Char | 17459 comments Kasia, I agree with Kate...it's fantastic!

message 26: by Micky Blue Skies (new)

Micky Blue Skies | 22 comments I have never heard of Greg Gifune but after reading, "The Rain Dancers," synopsis and ask if the great reviews I must get it. I am in desperate need of something really and truly scary and Stephen King, Dean Koontz and many of the other classic horror favorites just don't do it for me anymore.

Please keep the recommendations coming. ;)

Scot | 639 comments Yep. James and Greg are high on my list. HIGHLY recommended to every fan of horror. How can one be a fan of horror and not know Poe? I will be sure to give that one a try as well. Thanks, all, for the continued posting.

Carrie (brightbeautifulthings) (brightbeautifulthings) | 98 comments The Reapers are the Angels is a very atmospheric Southern Gothic zombie apocalypse novel with a strong female lead. I just want everyone to read it and love it as much as I do!
