'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) Hi Michael, another very good author covering military history. If you ever wanted to read something on the Falklands War then Max Hastings wrote a very decent account:

The Battle for the Falklands by Max Hastings by Max Hastings

message 555: by 'Aussie Rick' (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) I won’t go too more off topic here but let me know if you get the chance to read/listen to it and if you enjoy it as I know of two other very good books by a different author on this subject covering the British and then the Argentinean point of view that are great accounts.

message 556: by Michael (new)

Michael Flanagan (loboz) Will do I'm always on the look out for books on the Falklands. A to read subject for me.

message 557: by Kristi (last edited Nov 12, 2010 11:01AM) (new)

Kristi (kristicoleman) I have started both:

The Warrior Elite: The Forging of SEAL Class 228 by Dick Couch (no photo)

and

That Others May Live: The True Story of a PJ, a Member of America's Most Daring Rescue Force by Jack Brehm (no photo)

I've been on an Special Ops reading jag lately, it's absolutly fascinating what these men go thru to save lives (especially in the PJ's case). I am growing a HUGE respect for the Armed forces, amazing what knowledge will do!

message 565: by Alisa (last edited Nov 29, 2010 01:16PM) (new)

Alisa (mstaz) Just started this yesterday. A bit unlike me to read two historical fiction in a row but a couple of friends recently recommended this and it's set in my home city written by a local author. It should be easy to figure out if he did his homework! Set during WWII and centers on a relationship between a young Chinese boy, his family, and his relationship with a Japanese girl.

Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford by Jamie Ford Jamie Ford

Elizabeth (Alaska) I enjoyed both the Eric Larson, Michael, and the Jamie Ford, Alisa. For entirely different reasons, obviously. My current read is

The Lieutenant by Kate Grenville Kate Grenville

I very much enjoyed her The Secret River by Kate Grenville , a Man Booker nominee.

Thanks,

message 580: by 'Aussie Rick' (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) Hi Michael, thanks for the update, I think you'll enjoy (well I hope you do) your current book "Medic". I thought it had some great stories of men and womens bravery that you don't always hear about.

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) I've just started reading; "Memoirs of the Principle Events in the Campaigns of North Holland and Egypt; Together with a Brief Description of the Islands of Crete, Rhodes, Syracuse, Minorca, and the Voyage in the Mediterranean" by Major Francis Maule (late of the 2nd, or Queen's Regiment, and on the staff of the Severn District). Don't you just love those old titles! This book was first published in 1816.

KOMET | 9 comments Whilst on the subway to work this morning, I began reading the following book by Robert W. Merry that I had purchased a few days ago.

A Country of Vast Designs James K. Polk, the Mexican War and the Conquest of the American Continent by Robert W. Merry

James K. Polk is one of America's lesser known Presidents. Yet, during his one term in office, he was responsible for making the United States into a continental power through the acquisition of the Oregon Territory from Great Britain and half of Mexico's national territory as a result of the 1846-48 Mexican-American War.

message 583: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Craig Thanks, Komet it looks like a good book. Historians give him high marks because he went into his administration with set goals and met them all (including getting Texas).

Don't forget to link to the author as well:

message 584: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten I just got Deep Blue Home An Intimate Ecology of Our Wild Ocean by Julia Whitty by Julia Whitty and have also started An Unfinished Life John F. Kennedy, 1917 - 1963 (Dynasty) by Robert Dallek by Robert Dallek. Both should be good reads, though the JFK book is pretty long.

message 586: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) Mixing up the reading pile trying to decide what to read next. I *think* I have narrowed it down to these three choices:
Basilica The Splendor and the Scandal Building St. Peter's by R.A. Scotti byR.A. Scotti
Resistance A Frenchwoman's Journal of the War by Agnes Humbert byAgnes Humbert
A History of the World in 6 Glasses by Tom Standage by Tom Standage Tom Standage

I have a hard time reading more than one book at a time. Tough choice, eh?

message 587: by Elizabeth S (new)

Elizabeth S (esorenson) | 2011 comments Definitely a tough choice. They all look like good reads.

message 588: by 'Aussie Rick' (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) Hi Alisa, go for "Basilica:! :)

Basilica The Splendor and the Scandal Building St. Peter's by R.A. Scotti by R.A. Scotti

I've just started Adrian Tinniswood's latest book; "Pirates of Barbary".

message 589: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) Thanks Aussie Rick, for the encouragement. Funny, I was looking at it last night thinking it would be a good next choice. I'll probably start it tonight!

message 590: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten Only one book at a time?! How can you concentrate on it?

message 591: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) Kirsten fair question. I usually have so much other stuff going on with work and my personal life that I hate to have more than one book going at a time, if nothing more than for continuity. Once I get started I like to plow through it in big chunks of time so easier for me to focus on the topic that way.

Kirsten Alisa-fair enough. I was just curious because if I only read one book at once, I get bored and can't focus on it.
