Jessica (sureshot26) | 745 comments I finally have something to report, yay! I've been swamped, and while Dorothy Kearns Goodwin's Team of Rivals was fascinating, it's not a speed read. Here's my summary for BJ Rose, without whom I would never read presidential biography:

Most of Lincoln's accomplishments are well-known, but Goodwin shines light on some more subtle aspects, particularly his ability to build functional coalitions between people who wanted desperately to hate each other. I also find amazing his ability to stay calm and positive in the midst of the greatest crisis the nation's ever faced. Talk about the right man in the right moment! And can I give him points for being able to realize that leadership and a sense of humor are not mutually exclusive?

What surprised me, though, is that he took so long to fully realize the scope of McClellan's delays and make the decision to remove him from command - to me this is the real scandal because of the human toll involved. Lincoln was clearly sharp, insightful, and not beyond putting his foot down when warranted - it kind of drives you crazy that the one person he couldn't afford to indulge ended up being the one who received "seventy times seven chances." Or maybe I just hate unwarranted arrogance, which the general certainly had in spades if his letters to his wife are any insight.

Cindy AL (cangelmd) | 645 comments Wow, I really enjoyed "The Glass Castle", the dry detached tone adds a touch of realism to her story. In growing up she realizes how abnormal her life is, then how dangerous and hurtful, then she comes ot terms with it. I would have liked a little more connection between the girl who denied her background in college and the woman who wrote this book, but perhaps it was enough for her to acknowledge her history without analyzing it or passing judgment - thought provoking book.

Susan | 682 comments 25.5- Fortune's Rocks by Anita Shreve.

I am not a big historical fiction fan, and I often find Anita Shreve difficult to read. That being said, I did enjoy the ending of the book-it was the only point I really felt I finally connected to Olympia, and I agreed with the choices she finally made in her life.

That takes me to 185 points and the 16th book I read for the month of September. Hopefully I will be able to keep that pace up for October!

I much preferred Voyage of the Dawn Treader as a Christian allegory. The children, Lucy and Edmund, joined by their cousin, Eustace, do a lot more growing up in faith. The ending scenes at the "end of the world" are a bit thickly laid on in pointing out the allegorical aspect of the book, but the rest has an interesting journey meeting various peoples and learning of their accommodation to faith.

Jessica, wonderful review of Team of Rivals, and I agree with all of your points. I've always pretty much despised McClellan, both in his personality and in his leadership. My take on Lincoln's 'dithering' about McClellan was that hewanted to be right in his choice, and therefore saw the positive things that could happen, but since he wasn't usually a ditherer, this was really out of character for him, and disastrous for the country.

And since you stated that the book was fascinating, I'm glad I encouraged you to read it. I loved it, but you're right, it's not a speed read. I'm doing my presidential book in increments for that same reason, although so far I'm liking it.

Roseann | 138 comments Finished a few more--

5.3--ESCAPE BY SEA by L.S. Lawrence

Tele of a girl who lives in Carthage who has to go to sea when the Roman's invade her village. It was a little weak, but overall interesting.

15.8--DREAMS OF MY RUSSIAN SUMMERS by Andrei Makine & RESISTANCY by Anita Shreve (Belgium)--my initials are RB.

DREAMS OF MY RUSSIAN SUMMERS was an interesting look at Russian life from the viewpoint of a Grandmother telling her Grandson the story of her life. It was OK, but I had some trouble following all of the stories (not clear enough).

RESISTANCE is the story of a soldier who gets shot down over Belguim during WWII in a B-17 and of people of the village who help to save him from the Nazis. I did not expect to like this at all, but it was a very good look at what people are willing to do in time of war and even a nice love story.

and

25.9--EAT, PRAY, LOVE by Elizabeth Gilbert & FIGHT YOUR FEAR AND WIN by Don Greene

EAT, PRAY, LOVE--

I had been looking forward to reading this book for a while now. It was not as good as I had expected it to be, but I still liked it. The author takes a year to find herself and does it through food in Italy, spirituality in India, and finally love and balance in life in Indonesia.

FIGHT YOUR FEAR AND WIN

Rather than go off on a tangent, let me just say that I don't like self-help books and this one did not change my mind. I tend to like figuring out my problems myself (like in the other book I read for this challenge), or through my close friends. That said, if you like this sort of thing, the book gives many detailed ways to fight seven differents aspects of "fear" in your life.

This brings me to 535 points!
