So maybe the book is just not that great, regardless of the movie. Plus the movie has the huge benefit of having the adorable Hugh Dancy. *sigh*

I felt the exact same way about this book compared to the movie, which is rarely the case with me.

Task 10.5 – German author: Inkdeath by Cornelia Funke (11/5/09)
The story was really good, though this book was REALLY REALLY long. 16 CDs... 736 pages, apparently... Oye. But the story was full of twists and surprises and excitement. I'm glad the trilogy ended well! I gave it 4 stars.

5.1 Our Children are our Future - Winter's Child A Retelling of "The Snow Queen"
by Cameron Dokey
Reposting 15.2 Alternative History Challenge - Man in the Dark by Paul Auster. In this book, the alternate world is one where the terrorist attack of September 11th have never occurred and civil war has broken out (because of the whole 2000 election scandal/many people's disatisfaction with Senor Dubya).
I don't think that the alternative is preferable or better in any way to our current situation. Its kind of hard to decide. I think that it sounds nice to think of a world where the Twin Towers are still there and we haven't gone to war under false pretenses, but the idea of civil war in this country is too horrific to deal with.
That should bring me up to 440. I think. I always have trouble adding up my points.

Sara, that's why I use a spreadsheet--I let it automatically do the adding for me. Plus I can keep track of how many pages, when I put in requests at the library, and when I recorded the points--all sorts of stuff nobody else wants to know.

FALLING Leaves Return to their Roots Adeline Yen Mah
The Cradle Will FALL Mary Higgins Clark

I read Kiss of Midnight very early in the challenge and remember not liking it at all. I won't be reading another book by that author. I was pleasantly surprised by Life of Pi because I had gotten so many bad reviews from people I know.
That should bring me up to 220 points. I feel so accomplished! I know I won't come anywhere near finishing the challenge, but I think I've done pretty well for being incredibly busy with college and family this semester.

Task 25.4 (Candace's book/movie): The Jane Austen Book Club - Karen Joy Fowler

After reading the book I had no desire to see the movie, but now you all have me thinking I will look for it next time it is on cable! at least to see this Hugh Dancy person!

Senses: Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen
A lovely book with a metaphysical flair and filled with senses. The senses of taste and smell from the herb and flower garden were described beautifully almost to the point of really experiencing them.
Emotions: A Gracious Plenty by Sheri Reynolds
A badly disfigured girl is rejected by society and she takes solace in befriending the ghosts who inhabit the graveyard she tends. Filled with strong emotions - fear of her by the children of the town, her resentment and anger at the people in the community, and her developing comradeship with a ghost of her own era. Her life begins to change as an old classmate, also rejected by his peers, begins to show her respect and friendship. Very good book.
Memories: Pawley's Island by Dorothea Benton Frank - The token of the memory is a glass jar filled with sea shells collected from many summers spent vacationing along the Grand Strand of the South Carolina coast. The memory is the warm feeling of having spent two weeks each summer by the ocean with my family. A trip to Pawley's Island was a highlight of each vacation.

I just finished the first in the Wheel of Time series (a re-read) for the prophecy task. I hope this one counts as although there isn't a lot of prophecy in the first book the series is all based on prophecy.
I also hope the books I read for Diane's task count - I didn't get answers to my questions so I just went ahead! :) I read two 'how to' quilting books as there were a lot of pictures in one, and the fiction book is about five quilters overcoming challenges throughout a year.

Reposting 15.9 Homework assignment - I read Almost Home by Jessica Blank.
For the work portion, I think the assignment would be geared towards at-risk teens. The book itself is about runaway teens who live on the streets and the hardships of their lives. I would have an assignment that takes the different characters from the book, and have the students identify 1. the reasons the character ran away from home and 2. alternative solutions for the teens to deal with their problems.
Also, I finished 5.4 the adoption challenge by reading Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side by Beth Fantaskey. The main character in this book was adopted from Romania and raised in America, only to find out later that she is a Vampire Princess, once her betrothed shows up to claim her. It was actually really good, I enjoyed it in a very refreshing non-Twilight sort of way. (Don't get me wrong, I love Twilight, even with its creepy stalker sparkly vampires and wet noodle protagonist).
That should bring me up to 445.
Donna Jo, I think I'm going to definitely do the spreadsheet deal next challenge.
Also, thanks Cynthia for your speedy replies and for all you do for us crazy bibliophiles!
