FALL CHALLENGE 2009 COMPLETED TASKS

For task 25.3, I read Born on a Blue Day Inside the Extraordinary Mind of an Autistic Savant by Daniel Tammet. It is an autobiography and the author is gay.

Re: posts 3257 and 3267:
Sorry Cynthia...it's my university sweatshirt!

I enjoyed Fast Food Nation. It's a good look into the history, maintenance and the "behind the scenes" realities of our Fast Food restaurants. It isn't preachy, I thought, and does end by suggesting that if people wanted to change the situation, they could.
The Planet Of The Apes was wonderful. I watched the entire series some 10+ years ago and am happy to say that I still enjoy it. I'll be watching the rest of the series throughout the winter, I think. In this movie, 3 Scientist/Astronauts travel into the future (via being put into hibernation and travelling beyond the speed of light) and find themselves some 2000+ years in the future where humans are animals (cannot speak, live in wilderness) and are treated as such, while apes rule the planet.

One more book, and I'll hit my goal of 30 books for the challenge! :) (And I think I'll go over, because I've got 9 luxurious days of freedom just around the corner!)

Also, I just finished 15.2:

Would the world be better if his version were real? Hm. I don't know. There's just as much intolerance and entrenched belief, even if there's magic in his world.

Points: 500
Books: 57
Pages: 14,818

I read:
One Word: Twilight
Two words: Something Borrowed
Three Words: The Graveyard Book

The book is so much better! They leave out so much stuff in the movies that I just get so mad at it at times. Books are 1o times better!!!

Childhood dream job (I wanted to be an author/poet): Pale Fire
The M. Truman book was mostly tedious; I am not a fan of the more procedural-type mysteries. Pale Fire had an amazingly beautiful first section & I loved the concept. Unfortunately, the concept was less appealing in practice.

St. Antony's Fire by Steve White
In St. Antony's Fire, space aliens come to Earth in 1513. They take over Ponce de Leon, and, through him, eventually the Pope. Under the space aliens' influence (and using the alien's "St. Anthony's Fire", which is a laser gun), the Spanish Armada in 1588 is successful and England is conquored. Queen Elizabeth, Sir Francis Walsingham, William Shakespeare, Dr. Dee and others flee to Virginia. Eventually, the Spanish come to believe that the space aliens are not human, and Catholic Spain join with Protestant England to defeat the space aliens.
I would like to live in that world. After cooperating to defeat the space aliens, I would think that the Catholics and the Protestanats could find a way to peacefully co-exist. Then the destructive Catholic vs. Protestant wars of the 17th Century would not have happened. The Thirty Years War by C. V. Wedgwood describes just how destructive was the Catholic vs. Protestant Thirty Year's War (1618 to 1648), with 25% to 40% of the population of Central Europe killed, a larger percentage than was the case in World War II. (More people died in World War II, but a higher percentage of the existing population died during the religious wars of the 17th century).
290 + 15 = 305

I'm almost done with 15.1; I also have 4 other books read that will be assigned to tasks depending on what I read over the final two weeks of the challenge.

Senses: Catching Fire
Absolutely stunning book!
Emotions:The Geography of Bliss One Grump's Search for the Happiest Places in the World
I know more about happiness than I ever need to.
Memories: The Postmistress
I read this because my mother kept all the letters from my father to my mother while he was at sea when he was in the navy and gave them to me. I loved going back and reading letters that were written back and forth when I was only 2. It was very interesting to see them in a different light.

Two more books done. Woohoo!
10.7 The Heroines by Eileen Favorite
20.3 Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane

Hello!
I have completed the following tasks:
A) Task 5.5 ~ School Days I read The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway. I really loved this book in high school and was very happy that I loved it again ~ reading from my 'older & wiser' perspective. I definitely absorbed more of the nuances and themes (suppressed emotions, lost optimism) this time around but still saw and felt the landscapes, as though I were there.
B) Task 10.9 ~ Civil War I read the novel March by Geraldine Brooks. LOVED it!
C) Task 15.7 ~ Phys. Ed. I finally finished listening to A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, all 11 hours and 43 minutes of it and complemented that with my exercise - trail hiking. The story was amazing and Hosseini's ability to have written such great female characters is impressive. I was not thrilled with the narrator, Atossa Leoni; her intonations/inflections were distracting. I want to actually read the book now.

I am running out of steam! LOL!! This is my first challenge. Naively, I had hoped to finish, and be able to write a task for the next challenge. Maybe Rookie of the year is still possible?? (She asks, knowing it's not likely. LOL!!) I was so happy when I cracked 500 points and I am very satisfied with what I was able to accomplish, especially since I am not long home after a two week hospitalization. I strongly sense I may be moving on to start researching my choices for the next challenge (but I am not totally dismissing any further fall challenge reading at this point). I think a little time to re-group might be good. I am VERY keen for the winter challenge!

The more I read, the more I disliked the heroine of this book and the premise of it.
Although such things as "find yourself and know yourself", "love is everything" and "be true to yourself" are all true to an extent, when it's combined with "once you've found yourself, be true to yourself even if it means that you're mean, obnoxious and uncaring towards others" it loses all true meaning.
The heroine, Athena, becomes more and more unlikable as she evolves and finds "The Mother".
I also found the ending of the book to go against what the rest of the book was saying. Athena is not true to herself or to others; she does not stand for what she believes.
A disappointing read.

The more I read, the more I disliked the heroine of this book and the premise of it.
Although such things as "find yoursel..."
Petra, my thoughts exactly. I had the same reaction to that book. The cover was so promising...
