Bridget - I really enjoyed it. This was my second time reading it (I read it for the Spring challenge, and my book club picked it this month), and I got even more from it. It's an interesting mix between the sci-fi I expected it to be and ancient history and language. I would definitely recommend it. Out of our book club (of 10), I think there were only 2 that didn't really like it.

He father just up an left and she saw him very little after that. Her mother was very selfish and needy. But I am most thankful for my great friends. Her friends in the book help her through a rough time in her life.

message 3612: by Matthew (new)

Matthew | 89 comments Just realised I forgot to post the details for 50.1 -
Sense:A Mango-Shaped Space by Wendy Mass. Synsestesia is a really fascinating topic, and the book does a good job of describing how life would be with Synsestesia.
Emotion: The Shame of the Cities by Lincoln Steffens. This book doesn't really have shame as a central theme; it just exposed political corruption in the early 1900s.
Memory: Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. The book is the keepsake, and the book reminds me of what my early school years were (and sometimes still are) like.

I also finished 5.9 Coming of age with Prentice Alvin also by Orson Scott Card.

Under the Dome is my reward for completing the whole Fall Challenge, which I didn't think I would do. The Stand and It are my favorites by Stephen King, so I'm hoping this tome will stand up to those two.

Originally, I wasn't that excited about creating a task for the Winter Challenge since I'm not going to participate in it, but now that it looks like people are interested in playing Reading with Style, I'm also excited about sharing my task once I finish the Fall Challenge.

Kathleen | 144 comments I was finally able to complete 25.4 since Angels and Demons came out on DVD yesterday. I read Angels & Demons back in September and really enjoyed it. I found it very suspenseful and found it hard to put down. I was excited about seeing the movie but ended up being very disappointed. The movie was really very bad. They changed the story a great deal and the things they changed really took from the story. A lot of it didn't make sense. There was absolutely no chemistry between the two leads. The only good part about the movie was getting to see Ewan McGreggor :-)

My total is now 405 points.

message 3620: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1332 comments I finished another task early this morning - I finished 10.3 by reading The Clan of the Cave Bear. This was a really interesting bit of historical fiction about prehistoric peoples - overall I enjoyed the story a great deal - some sections were a bit tedious where she went on about all the different kind of wildlife or how the weapons were made was and trying to keep track of all the names and who each person was was hard at times - but the interactions between the characters and the belief system of the people was interesting. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

15.3 Discover The Equation For Good Books (Math)
• Subtraction - Subtract The Number Of Letters Found In Your Whole Name (First, Middle, Last) From Your Age And Read A Book With That Many Letters Or Words In The Title. For me, that would be 53 - 10 = 38 letters; I read Hothouse Flower and the Nine Plants of Desire A Novel by Margot Berwin. (It's 38 letters if one excludes the "A Novel" part of the title.) I would not recommend this novel; the first third of the novel is pretty good, the middle third is OK, the last third fails.
• Division – Divide The Year You Were Born By Your Age (Round That Number To The Nearest Whole Number) And Then Read A Book That Is That Number In A Series. For me, (1956 divided by 53 = 36.9; nearest = 37; a book that is 3rd or 7th of series). I read The Trouble With Witches An Ophelia and Abby Mystery Book 3 by Shirley Damsgaard, the third in the Ophelia and Abby Mystery Series.

350 + 15 = 365

I'm still working on 2 more tasks; if I finish them, I'll top 400 :0)

message 3623: by Jensownzoo (new)

Jensownzoo | 125 comments TOTAL POINTS: 330

Only fifteen more points and I'll have reached the halfway point!

New Tasks:

50.1
SENSES: Wanderlust by Ann Aguirre
In this novel, the main character is one of the few people to carry a gene that allows her to sense and navigate through something called “grimspace” which allows space ships to travel long distances between “beacons”, allowing real-time space travel. The experience is described as addicting and eventually deadly but utterly beautiful…reminds me of some accounts of hallucinogenic drugs, actually.

EMOTION: Kira-Kira by Cynthia Kadohata
The emotion is DEDICATION/DEVOTION. I originally picked up this book because a different emotion was emphasized in the book flap, but when I actually read it a different emotion seemed to be even more prominent. This family lives and breathes dedication, primarily to one another. Whether it is the parent’s willingness to work exceedingly long hours to save up for a house for the family (the father puts in 90 hours a week sexing chickens), or the sisters dedication to each other, or the main character’s care of her little brother. There are many more examples as this emotion permeates the book and influences almost all of what this family does.
MEMORIES: Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom by Cory Doctorow
The book is based in Disney World in Florida, but is a scifi take on the subject, touching on the value of preserving nostalgic memories vs. upgrading the experience to entice more people to share in it. My keepsake is a portrait of myself done in pastels. It was done when I flew down to DisneyWorld a few months after my brother was born. I was three but still remember that trip vividly. The portrait also depicts the "wings" that children were given when they flew on TWA.

Past Tasks:

message 3625: by Matthew (new)

Matthew | 89 comments Finished 25.4 - Book and a movie with The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom. I loved the book, the movie was OK. For me, a movie can never beat a book simply because you cannot get inside your main character's head in a movie. It was a decent movie, but the book was way better.

I should be done by Friday afternoon. I have one more paperback to finish and a CD to listen to. I chose Christmas music for Music Appreciation and will not listen to holiday music until after Thanksgiving. I am hoping to get the tree up this weekend so I can listen then. Go Stephanie, go!! We NEED another task for the Winter Challenge. :-) I finished my last audio book for this challenge the other day and had to listen to the radio in the car too. It was really strange. But I just picked up 4 or 5 audiobooks from the library that I'm going to use for the Winter Challenge so I'll be listening to those soon.

Have fun trimming the Christmas tree over the weekend. T

25.5 - JANICE'S TASK - Read A Book With "Fortune" Or "Prophecy" In The Title, That Features Fortune-Telling, Prophecy Or Prediction(s) As The Main Theme Or Has A Fortune Teller As A Main Character

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Yes, yes. I admit it. I *was* one of the four people left on earth who haven’t read any of the Harry Potter books yet. I finally broke down and did it. It was an okay book, but not a five star in my opinion. I’ll probably give it 3 stars. (But I’m really stingy with my book ratings.) I’ll continue to read the other books in the series when they fit in future challenge tasks, but I’m not rushing out to the library to check out the whole series right this minute.

Mary Beth (marybethbaker) | 134 comments So, this is actually my first post of finished tasks for the Fall Challenge. I decided to slack a little on this one and managed to read part of several multi-book tasks. However, here are the ones I did finish this go-round:

Task 5.3: Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson
Task 5.6: Undead and Unwelcome by Mary Janice Davidson

Task 10.7: City of Glass by Cassandra Clare

Task 15.1: City of Bones by Cassandra Clare / City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare
Task 15.3: Deadly Desire by Keri Arthur / Lover Avenged by J.R. Ward (using the Multiplication and Division sections of the task)
Task 15.8: The Caliph’s House by Tahir Shah / An Assembly Such As This by Pamela Aidan (Countries = Morocco and Britain)

Task 25.1: Kin by Crystal Williams / Let the Great World Spin by Collum McCann

Total Points: 90 (See everyone at the Winter Challenge!)

message 3633: by Emily (new)

Emily | 130 comments I completed task 10.10 (Cat's Meow) by reading The Underneath by Kathi Appelt and task 25.4 (Book/Movie) by reading and watching New Moon by Stephenie Meyer. I enjoyed The Underneath, though it was a bit repetitive/slow at times; still, very sweet. And FINALLY, I am able to claim points for New Moon. New Moon was the first book that I read for the challenge, but I had to wait for the film to come out to claim points. I am not sure which I preferred, the book or the film. In general, I've found both Twilight and New Moon to drag a bit, so the bonus to the movie is the condensing of the plot into two hours. I would probably say that I liked the first half of the book as much as the movie, but on the whole, I liked the movie better. Part of what helped the movie experience along was laughing at all the gasps and giggles coming from the crowd every time Jacob was bare chested (hilarious!).

Sara (hoot31) Last task for me for this challenge done I think.

Task Midway 50 points:
Part 1: Gourmet Rhapsody This book is all about taste. It is actually a prequel and companion to Elegance of the Hedgehog and is about a food critic who is in search of his last memory of a favorite dish. I wanted to eat through the entire reading of this and was pleasently surprised that much of the food he enjoyed was not super fussy and fancy, but great memory food.

Part 2: Mad Girls in Love A Novel made me laugh aloud plenty. As for the emotion, it takes you on a roller coaster of all as it examines the lives of old friends and family members in the South and all the trouble they get themselves into. I can honestly say, you fall in love with all the characters as they fall in and out of love with each other.

Part 3: The Green Star of Oz A Special Oz Story holds a special place in my heart. My keepsake is a picture of my Papa and myself when I was a little girl, not much bigger than my daughter is now. He was a strong influence on my life and I think of him every day. This book is actually written by the great-grandson of L. Frank Baum and tells a story of him going back to Oz and talking to Dorothy before he goes. The idea is that he will always be with Oz even when he is gone and the reminder is the Green Star that is set to appear. It is a really touching story. My Papa use to watch Oz with me, so it seems only fitting. I actually have met the author on a trip ith my husband and have a signed and messaged copy, so really, it plays two roles for the memory task.

Total points for this task: 50

Total points for challenge thus far: 460

Now, off to finish planning for the Winter Challenge and enjoy the rest of Thanksgiving weekend! Thanks for making this challenge fun Cynthia. I am glad I decided to join in the madness and I am really looking forward to the Winter tasks and the changes you have made. Thanks for keeping it fun!!

Leora | 209 comments 50 pointer is now done, I am so excited!

Senses-Grave Sight by Charlaine Harris-this is one of the authors series, the main character is a woman who has the 'second sight' and aids people in finding loved ones whom are deAd and have disappeared. I have enjoyed all of the books I have read by Harris thus far.

Emotions-The Senitmental Traveler by Laurence Sterne, I picked this one for 2 reasons-one because to be sentimental is a strong emotion and 2 because it's on the 1001 list which I have become a virtual slave to. I think the strongest emotion of the main character is more like desperation though because he is soooo searching for love in his travels. It was ok.

Memories-The Good Old Days edited by Ernst Klee, this is a book about the perpetrators of the Holocaust. I bought this book in Berlin last summer when I was on a Holocaust study trip through Germany and Poland with a group of educators, so the book itself is the memento. It was very informative but very difficult reading.

595 points.
