I don't know if I'm going to have any luck with this. Some years ago, I was replacing another secretary in my office for a couple of days and she had left a novel at her desk which I couldn't help but pick up. I don't remember the name of the book, author or any of the characters and I only got a couple of chapters in but I would love to find it and read the whole thing since I do recall it grabbing me right from the start.
It went something like this: I think it was narrated by the daughter of a couple who married young. He was very shy and very skinny and she was very fat but an excellent cook - in fact, she was addicted to cooking and he looooved whatever she made. He was QUITE in love with her and I don't remember how but she died right after the narrater was born. After that, I don't remember much. It was not quite as juvenile a story as I describe it to be here and if you have read it, you'll know what I mean. Can anyone tell me the name of the book or author? Ring any bells?

It sounds like the very beginning of "The Stone Diaries" by Carol Shields. I LOVED this book.
