Fanart. FanFic. Fan-everything!

I had a bit of a Harry Potter moment this morning and browsed FanArt for way longer than I should have.

What books have inspired your art? Have you ever done a piece of art that was inspired by a book?

Did you send it to the author in anyway?

I'd like to hear your fanart history!

Brian Basham (brianbasham) | 390 comments I've done quite a few graphics featuring comic book characters, but unfortunately I can't draw. I would probably be making comic books or Manga if that was the case. :D

James McCormick I'm not a great artists, but if I've got time and enough source pics I can draw something passable. When my scifi book came out later October I received a form asking about the cover. I spent a long time detailing what I wanted, did some pics of my own as well (as templates - nowhere need good enough to be shown) then just before the release the publisher did was use fotolia and to select images from the site so they could put them together!!! I have two sort of sequals to the book (Dragon) and am thinking of getting an artist friend to help design this cover for the next one if it is accepted.

J. David Clarke (clarketacular) | 418 comments Long ago, I was attending a book signing with Douglas Adams, author of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I was pretty young, and had made him something, not exactly art but a sign meant to be exactly like a sign described in the book. Anyway, it was really lame and not well done, which I realized as I was handing it to him. I stammered something like "It's not very good," and half heartedly tried to take it back, but he was very nice and said "Hold on, let me see." He looked it over and said it was really great and thanked me. I got my signed copy of Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency and left, mortified but happy to have met him. It's even more meaningful now that he is no longer with us. But I can attest that he was not only a great writer but a genuinely nice and polite man, because it was a pretty pitiful effort. lol

But now that you're an author J, you can understand that it probably meant a lot to him that you loved his work? Even though he was already famous. He'd have always been a struggling artist on the inside, like the rest of us :p
