Starts: 01.01.2016
Ends: 31.12.2016

Players are welcome to join in whenever they want during the year, as long as the event is running.

Rules:

-Each player decides, if he wants to compete for the DC or the Marvel team.

-DC players are trying to complete the DC roster challenge, Marvel players trying to complete the Marvel roster challenge.

-There are going to be 12 characters on each roster, each represented by 3 challenges based on that characters traits and powers.

-For each trait challenge you're able to complete, your team is awarded 1 point.

-If you manage to complete all three trait challenges you "recruit" that character completely, which is awarded with 3 additional points.

-With 12 characters and 3 trait challenges per character, you need to read 36 books for the maximum of 72 points from the recruitment part of the challenge.

-The books for the recruitment challenge can be read at any point during 2016.

-Each book can only count toward one trait challenge, so you can't complete multiple challenges by just reading one book, even if the book would technically qualify for more then one challenge.

-For a book to count, it should have at least 100 pages. Graphic Novels do not count for the challenge.

-In addition to the recruitment part, each month a supervillain will be revealed. Like the heroes, each villain will have 3 trait challenges.
For each completed challenge you're rewarded with 1 point, if you manage to "beat" the villain by completing all 3 related challenges, you're arwarded with an additional 3 points.

-Villains will only be active for one month each and you can't score from their challenges afterwards. But of course you can complete them for fun.

-Villains should be revealed 2-3 days before the end of the month, so you get a little bid of time ahead to think about potential books to beat them.

-IMPORTANT:The books required for the villain challenges have to be read completely within the timeframe the villain is active. A book started 2 days prior the villain goes active, can't be counted for the challenge.

-Beating each villain within the given amount of time would result in an additional maximum of 72 points you're able to earn for your team.

-IMPORTANT:To be able to keep up the score, it would great, if you could use a new post for each new book read, maybe like this: book link/character name/challenge name/number of challenges completed for that character
Example: Dune/Captain America/Shield Toss/2 of 3
Of course you can additionally use a huge post, where you can schedule your books for all the challenges.
And it would be extremely helpful, if you would write "x recruited" within the post you completed the final trait challenge for a hero, or "x defeated" respectively for beating a villain.

- Portal Heroes:
Beast and Martian Manhunter are trying to recruit help for their teams and are trying to open portals to other comic universes to recruit heroes from their.
That means that we will have 6 additional heroes this year. But to be able to to score from them, they need to be brought through the portal by the teams.
How does that work? Every time a player reads one of the Dragons & Jetpacks Books of the Month, this book counts towards an "Energy Cell" counter for his team. After the counter (30 for the first portal) is filled the team can unlock 1 of the 6 outer-dimensional heroes. After the decision is made, the hero belongs either to the DC or Marvel team and can't be unlocked by the other side. When the second team opens a portal, they choose from the remaining 5 heroes.

-For the portal heroes, only books count that are read after the time the hero was unlocked, so if a hero is unlocked in April, you can't use books read prior to that date.
Also, players who join a team during the year can only make books count for those outer-dimensional heroes after they've joined the challenge. This restriction only counts for these heroes, the normal roster can be recruited retrospectively by new players.

-After we see how fast the teams manage to open the first portal, the amount of Energy Cells needed to open the second portal might be adjusted to a lower or higher number.

-It is up to the players to decide when they read a botm, if they want to have it count towards a normal challenge or as an energy cell. Please include that information in your posts

-So, that's how you can play. I hope you're going to enjoy this challenge. :)

Do we have until New Year to decide? I Do not read as much as most people and wouldn't like to drag down a team.

I'd love to join but I generally can only read 30-40 books a year.

Lancer, I wouldn't worry about dragging down a team. :) Any participation is fun. Some read a lot for the challenge and some don't.

I guess my second issue is that I rarely join in on BOTMs and am rather picky about what I read because of the low amount I have time for which may also cause a problem with completing the challenges. Maybe I will wait and see how many join and if a team is short a person or two I will join. I'M not the biggest marvel/DC fan out there but think this challenge/gameboy brilliant.

It is really a fun thing, so I wouldn't worry about it. This year f.e. was already pretty much decided during the summer, but people just kept on reading for the fun of it.
I think it is more about challenging yourself to see, if you can find some books that fit the challenges, maybe pick up 2-3 reads that you've normally wouldn't have picked up and see where it goes.
I think the part where we had the most friendly competition is always when there is a new villain to defeat or who unlocks some of the heroes first. But our speedreaders have that covered.^^
And even if you just add 10 or 20 books, it's more than if you hadn't joined and if you had fun with it, my goal is already achieved. :)

This sounds really fun, and it will encourage me to use the actual site on my laptop rather than just the phone app. Seeing as I know next time to nothing about Marvel or DC outside of why Stan Lee chose to name the Green Goblin what he did I am fine with wither team. So I would love to Join on whoever needs more people.

Im gonna switch and join team DC this year please Mpauli (thanks for doing this again btw!)
Lancer: For me this is less about the competition and more a way of helping me narrow down what books to read. Without it I think I would spend a week trying to decide between books rather than reading them. :)

I'll go with DC since I know less about them and it will be a way to learn more about some of the characters/settings

Haven't decided on a team yet, but I think there's a typo. Two, actually.

For Comm. Gordon, it reads 1. To protect and serve
Read a book with a policeman on the cover or where a cat is the main character works for the police.

I suspect the cat phrase is a mistake.

Also, under Thor, there's an "pr" instead of an "or" but that's not much of an issue.

I totally said DC instead of Marvel. Sorry about that. If still possible I meant I know less about Marvel. Which isn't saying much but the only superhero movies I have watched are Batman ones. I think I may have also watched some of the spiderman cartoons from the 90s as well. Anyway I am rambling, Marvel if it is still possible for me. Thanks and sorry again.

Great to see so many responses already. I've assigned everyone so far except Dawn and Wayland. I'm going to fill up the minority team with people like Dawn who don't mind on which team they are on December 31st.

Oh, thanks Wayland for spotting those. I've changed them. As I'm a lazy person I copied the rosters and challenges from last year, so I didn't have to do the whole structure again and just replaced the content.
And Commissioner Gordon's spot was the one Catwoman had last year and I deleted on the wrong spot there.^^

That's what I figured Mpauli. Sorry, I edit so much of my own writing and proof for several others, it's second nature.

As to the team thing, to coin a phrase, make mine Marvel.

I can't stand Lobo, and Iron Fist is a favorite of mine. Sorta surprised you didn't do Luke Cage/Power Man, since he's the only Netflix character I think you've skipped so far. Maybe next year. ;)

Yay for Marvel! I was thinking the same for the Marvel challenges. I'm struggling to find books for some of them.

Wayland wrote: "Sorta surprised you didn't do Luke Cage/Power Man, since he's the only Netflix character I think you've skipped so far. ."

He actually was on my original 12 man roster, but I didn't want to do 3 Netflix characters and I switched him to Blade, cause Blade offered the shades and vampire traits.
And if we're ending up doing this again in 2017, I need to hold a few people back that people might have heard of.^^
That's also why I replaced my original idea of having Gamora and Drax this year and brought in Nova and She-Hulk instead.
Same for DC, where I assume that we're going to see a few of the side-characters coming into their superhero shoes this season or next season *cough* Killerfrost *cough*. :P

Makes sense. Also, DC will have a few more up from Legends of Tomorrow/Flash/Arrow, like Vixen at the very least. Constantine was on Arrow this year, too.

Sorry, trying to help. I'm a hero geek. ;)

Dawn | 1249 comments Hi Mpauli,
I've a couple of questions.
1. Can I count a book towards a recruitment challenge if I re-read a book I read a couple of years ago?
2. I've already started the first couple of chapters of Gardens of the Moon, will this count or does the books have to be read completely in 2016?

message 48: by Wayland, Ernest Scribbler (new)

Not at all trying to speak for Mpauli, but in years past, it has to be wholly done in 2016.
