Yes, they work. As always I try to be as open as possible, but I don't want to overcomplicate the challenge texts by too many details and exceptions.

Let's say no this time, because we keep on adding special books a lot lately in the group and I don't want to lose track of a million exceptions to the core rules and make it overcomplicated for everyone to follow.
Every book that follows the normal rules counts towards the normal challenges and only the two regular af and fantasy botm count towards the energy cells.
The energy cells are a little more strict, because of the ponit curve. I don't want all the portals to be open too early or too late and by sticking with the number of energy cells we have this year achieved with the two books of the month, I think we're in a very good place for the portal heroes.

For them Joy was the MVP by getting the achievements for being the first player to recruit Rat Queens and being the first player to defeat Jack O'Lantern.
Jack was also defeated by Wayland and Shawnie also recruited the Rat Queens. In addition to that Kate recruited Agent Coulson and Rinn added Blade to her team.
For Team DC Lel recruited Commissioner Gordon while Veronica finished Portal Hero Nimona. Dawn defeated Jack O'Lantern and Greg added Alfred to his roster.
The Energy Cell race ended 2:2 and is still very close.

That makes sense! Sorry if you've answered this kind of question a billion times, I could never remember what the official answer was. So I can use it for Jack then :D

This week was a win for Team DC. For them Milou recruited Hawkman and Lel defeated Jack O' Lantern.
For Team Marvel Rinn was the MVP by also defeating our villain of the month.
Team DC won the Energy Cell race with 5:1 and took over the lead in the battle for the final portal.
