Claus Corbett I was wondering if any members use Patreon, and if it works for them.

A friend recommended the site, but I've read most of what I could find in the support there, and I'm a little uncertain whether (or how, actually) to use it.

Melissa Jensen (kdragon) | 469 comments I have a friend who's been using Patreon to help fund her web comic. She has it set up so that each donation option comes with a different... not "prize" but, incentive, I guess? For example, if a person were to donate twenty dollars they would get behind-the-scenes content including things that didn't make it into the final panel. While those who donate fifty dollars receive the BTS content as well as early access to new content, and so on. That type of thing.

All I really know about it is that you set it up, let people know you have one set up, and they can donate money to help you in a particular endeavor. I thought about using it myself in order to raise money to hire an editor and someone to make book covers, but decided on just making crafts to sell instead.

Ellison Blackburn (ellisonblackburn) | 130 comments An Indie author who uses it to successfully fund her podcasts is Joanna Penn and she's very open about her "author-entrepreneur" practices. Check out her site and see if you can glean anything useful for your purposes.

Claus Corbett Hmmm... I think I'll take a look into it then!

Ellison, thanks for the tip, gonna check her Penn's website and see what's what.

Joanna Penn is an amazingly helpful resource. She's got a lot of great info and advice to offer to indie authors. Her business is called The Creative Penn.

It's an intriguing idea, but I can't imagine asking anyone to pay me money each moth to support my nascent writing career. That would be nice, though. :)

Wisteria Kitsune (wisteriakitsune) Patreon= a play on patron, right? So just like in the old days, the church was a patron of michaelangelo & nobles were the patrons of musicians like Mozart, so now any consumer can become a patron of the arts. Even now Museums & the opera have patrons. Kickstarter allows anyone w/a few bucks to become a "patron" of some project.

But perhaps patronage of the arts just isn't in vogue anymore.

message 8: by Claus (new)

Claus Corbett Yes, I believe the name came from patron - that's how the site calls people who donate.

I've been checking out projects by writers (there aren't many), and I get the impression that it is a little bit a trade, not really a patronage. Patrons get benefits and exclusive content "for free" depending on how much they donate per month.

One of the authors is even delivering chapters of the book for free for his patrons, and he gets around 1700 dollars per month on 'donations'.

message 9: by Wisteria (new)

Wisteria Kitsune (wisteriakitsune) Claus: hmm... So what's the author's name? $1700/170 patrons=$10/patron/mo in exchange for ~3k words/chap/mo Of a first draft?

Maybe I should switch from wattpad...

Just a note That Patrons in the preindustrial era exchanged their support for a portrait or live chamber music.

K.C. Herbel (k_c_herbel) | 118 comments Sounds like it could work well for a serial book and/or series.
