Bronwyn (singingbron) | 17 comments Hey everyone, I haven't been very active in the group but I've been doing the challenge on my own. Here's where I'm up to so far but I have some catching up to do! Still 16 to go and only 3 months of the year left.

1. A book based on a fairy tale
2. A National Book Award winner - Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates
3. A YA bestseller - Paper Towns by John Green
4. A book you haven't read since high school

8. A book set in Europe - Summer House with Swimming Pool by Herman Koch
9. A book under 150 pages - The Grownup by Gillian Flynn

14. A book you can finish in a day - The Library of Unrequited Love by Sophie Divry
15. A book written by a celebrity
16. A political memoir
17. A book at least 100 years older than you - Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
18. A book that's more than 600 pages
19. A book from Oprah's Book Club
20. A science-fiction novel
21. A book recommended by a family member - A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson
22. A graphic novel - Can't We Talk about Something More Pleasant? by Roz Chast (actually a graphic memoir, but I figured that was OK)
23. A book that is published in 2016 - Gotham by Nick Earls
24. A book with a protagonist who has your occupation
25. A book that takes place during Summer - The China Garden by Kristina Olsson
26. A book and its prequel
27. A murder mystery - The One Who Got Away by Caroline Overington
28. A book written by a comedian - A Tiny Bit Marvellous by Dawn French
29. A dystopian novel - The Natural Way of Things by Charlotte Wood
30. A book with a blue cover
31. A book of poetry - Wild by Ben Okri
32. The first book you see in a bookstore
33. A classic from the 20th century - The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton
34. A book from the library - Hyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened by Allie Brosh
35. An autobiography - The Promise of Iceland by Kari Gislason (maybe more memoir than autobiography? I don't know how pedantic you want to be about the difference!)
36. A book about a road trip - The Road to Little Dribbling: Adventures of an American in Britain by Bill Bryson
37. A book about a culture you're unfamiliar with - Without You, There Is No Us: My Time with the Sons of North Korea's Elite by Suki Kim
38. A satirical book - Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen
39. A book that takes place on an island
40. A book that's guaranteed to bring you joy

I have books in mind for most of the remaining categories but I haven't found anything that appeals yet for a few of them: a book based on a fairy tale, a romance set in the future, and a book and its prequel.

I'm also pretty sure that no book exists with a protagonist who compiles geochemistry data and georeferences maps. And if there is, I highly doubt I'd want to read it! I guess if there was a book out there about a geologist that might be the next best thing. Anyone know of any?

Cheers,
Bronwyn

Deb (debsd) | 17 comments Coming late to the challenge (started about mid-September) and even later to this thread. Books read: 41/41. Have plans for most of the not-yet-read categories, but am still open to suggestions! Now desperate. Two categories left - a graphic novel, because I don't do comic boo... graphic novels, and a book recommended by someone I've just met, because I haven't recently met any readers!

[ √ ] 1. A book based on a fairy tale: Kissing the Witch: Old Tales in New Skins
[ √ ] 2. A National Book Award winner: The Bluest Eye
[ √ ] 3. A YA bestseller: Uprooted
[ √ ] 4. A book you haven't read since high school: Animal Farm
[ √ ] 5. A book set in your home state: I'm in the UK, so am using Rivers of London
[ √ ] 6. A book translated to English: The Boy in the Suitcase
[ √ ] 7. A romance set in the future: Cinder
[ √ ] 8. A book set in Europe: The Year of Living Danishly: My Twelve Months Unearthing the Secrets of the World's Happiest Country
[ √ ] 9. A book under 150 pages: Of Mice and Men
[ √ ] 10. A New York Times bestseller: The Joy Luck Club
[ √ ] 11. A book that's becoming a movie this year: Room
[ √ ] 12. A book recommended by someone you just met - I eventually received a recommendation from someone on another forum, who suggested Gloria Steinem's My Life on the Road
[ √ ] 13. A self-improvement book: Smarter Faster Better: The Secrets of Being Productive in Life and Business
[ √ ] 14. A book you can finish in a day: Helpless: A True Short Story
[ √ ] 15. A book written by a celebrity: Not My Father's Son
[ √ ] 16. A political memoir - this was going to be My Own Words but it turns out not to be a memoir, so I think I'm going to read read Born a Crime
[ √ ] 17. A book at least 100 years older than you: Frankenstein
[ √ ] 18. A book that's more than 600 pages: Kristin Lavransdatter
[ √ ] 19. A book from Oprah's Book Club: The Poisonwood Bible
[ √ ] 20. A science-fiction novel: The Hunger Games I wasn't completely certain this counted, but the rest of the family chorused, "Yes, it's sci-fi!" - so I went along with them.
[ √ ] 21. A book recommended by a family member: The Art of Being a Brilliant Teenager
[ √ ] 22. A graphic novel - I gave in and buckled down to finish Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic. I still don't like graphic novels though.
[ √ ] 23. A book that is published in 2016: Between You & Me: Confessions of a Comma Queen
[ √ ] 24. A book with a protagonist who has your occupation: I thought I'd use Kristin Lavransdatter for this (the whole six-sons thing), but she was so annoying I couldn't bring myself to do it. So ticking this box with the title alone (although I did read the book!) - Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children
[ √ ] 25. A book that takes place during Summer: The New Policeman
[ √ ] 26. A book and its prequel: Charmed Life and The Chronicles of Chrestomanci, Vol. 1
[ √ ] 27. A murder mystery: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time
[ √ ] 28. A book written by a comedian: Caitlin isn't a comedian, strictly speaking, but she's always entertaining and often very funny - How to Be a Woman
[ √ ] 29. A dystopian novel: Lord of the Flies
[ √ ] 30. A book with a blue cover: Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning
[ √ ] 31. A book of poetry: Honeycomb Poems
[ √ ] 32. The first book you see in a bookstore: I rarely go in an actual bookstore, so I decided to use the first book wherever I landed on Goodreads, and this was it - The Lightning Thief
[ √ ] 33. A classic from the 20th century: To Kill a Mockingbird
[ √ ] 34. A book from the library - possibly The Sudden Appearance of Hope, which I've been listening to in the car, but would prefer to finish in print, or The Rejected Writers' Book Club - it will depend what's there when I get to the library. Edit 2 Dec: just finished The Sudden Appearance of Hope, but have also acquired The Rejected Writers' Book Club, so it will get added to the TBR list.
[ √ ] 35. An autobiography: Boys in the Trees: A Memoir
[ √ ] 36. A book about a road trip: another slightly sideways view; this is a road trip but on the sea - The Cat's Table
[ √ ] 37. A book about a culture you're unfamiliar with: Memoirs of a Geisha
[ √ ] 38. A satirical book: Pygmalion
[ √ ] 39. A book that takes place on an island: Primates of Park Avenue
[ √ ] 40. A book that's guaranteed to bring you joy: "guaranteed" is such a...definitive term - so I went with something that was highly likely to bring me joy, and since I'd loved my previous Adichie reads, this was it: Americanah
