Janice (jamasc) | 59907 comments What book(s) have you purchased?

message 2: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I just bought Faceless Killers (added book to tbr not so long ago after learning the author died), The Luminaries (this is for the geocache challenge - set in New Zealand) and The Windup Girl (as i read the library book and want my own version for a future reread) in the UK kindle sale.

message 3: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I hope you enjoy The Luminaries Sarah. I am very hit-and-miss with Booker Prize books but I really enjoyed this one. It's long but worth it.

message 4: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I remember you all did a buddy read for it and the majority of people liked it so I'm hopeful. It does sound interesting.

message 5: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11263 comments The Luminaries was strongly recommended to me by a book club friend. It's a chunkster, but I'll give it a try some day, for sure.

message 6: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Jan 01, 2016 06:15AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Just make sure you have a good chunk of time to invest into it. You really need to devour it, particularly the first parts. Not really one you can pick up and put down. I read it at this time of year in 2014, and loved it. Read it in big chunks over 5 days. Would have been 3 but i had to go back to work.

message 7: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11263 comments Wow, 5 days for a book with more than 800 pages is impressive. All my GR friends rated it 4 or 5 stars (more 5 than 4), with only one exception of 2 stars. I'd try to see if it fits a challenge task or monthly read during this year and finally put it in my plan.

message 8: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments I honestly had nothing else to do and it's too hot at this time of year to do anything else anyway.

message 9: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59907 comments As I was browsing through Kindle's monthly deals for January, I was giving myself a stern talking to about buying more books. No sooner did I agree with myself that I would only consider buying books that are already on my wishlist of over 1000 titles, than I stumbled across World After being offered for $1.99. It wasn't on my wishlist but I do own the first book in the series on audiobook.

I investigated further. Another $1.99 and it's available at audible on Whispersync. Book 3, End of Days is also available for the same Whispersync deal.

Before I could enter into further debate, I'd clicked all sorts of links and now I am the proud owner of the entire trilogy. I can justify anything apparently.

If that was a New Year's resolution, it was the shortest lived one ever. But I don't do NYR's so how could it be?

Delitealex | 336 comments I picked up The Mirror Empire Empire Ascendant for 1.99 each.

Many good books on the holiday deals list.

message 11: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19154 comments Lol, Janice! It's hard to pass up a deal like that. I've heard great things about that series.

message 12: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee My books just arrived, I've got First Grave on the Right, and Poison Study. So excited about 'em.

I enjoyed both of those!

message 14: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59907 comments Enjoy, CFDeeDee.

message 15: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee Thanks guys :D

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I picked up the last two books in the 'Farseer Trilogy' by Robin Hobb:

Royal Assassin Royal Assassin (Farseer Trilogy, #2) by Robin Hobb

Assassin's Quest Assassin's Quest (Farseer Trilogy, #3) by Robin Hobb

Kristie | 19154 comments I got a gift card for Christmas and used it to purchase:

Humans of New York Stories by Brandon Stanton Humans of New York: Stories I follow them on Facebook and love their stories.

My Name Is Lucy Barton by Elizabeth Strout My Name Is Lucy Barton I've been seeing this around and it looks really interesting, so I preordered it. This is my first book by Elizabeth Strout, though I have The Burgess Boys on my TBR.

I also picked up a couple of adult coloring books. I love to use coloring in my therapy sessions with the kids, so I figured I'd get a couple for me for at home.
Creative Haven Mehndi Designs Collection Coloring Book by Dover Publications Inc. Enchanted Forest An Inky Quest & Coloring Book by Johanna Basford

message 18: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19154 comments I just stopped by a book store for no reason other than to browse. I ended up getting The City and Cruel Crown.

I also ordered Saga, Volume 1 online, because we are reading the series in another book club and my library's copy is missing.

message 19: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments I got Alex and Under the Wide and Starry Sky the other day.

message 20: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59907 comments I picked up a whispersync deal today. Nefertiti's Heart was free on Kindle and $1.99 (US) on Audible. One more series to start.

message 21: by Kristie, Moderator (last edited Jan 09, 2016 09:17PM) (new)

Kristie | 19154 comments I also got Nefertiti's Heart as a Kindle freebie today. I did not get the audio, but I love those whispersync deals.

message 22: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59907 comments $1.99 for an audiobook is an awesome price. :) I'll do a whispersync deal if the combined price is no more than $5-6. Any more than that and I'll either just get the ebook or use a credit at Audible.

message 23: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19154 comments I do the same thing with the limit. Sometimes I hold out though with buying the audio until I'm ready to read it, then if I want the audio I purchase it.

message 24: by Mariab (new)

Mariab | 3059 comments I got Thornfor 0.99, offer from Amazon

message 25: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I really want to stop buying books as I have so many on my kindle that I haven't read yet. I guess I'm lucky that they are all on my kindle though and not cluttering up the boat (well about 20 are). But I have just bought a novella The Churn which links to The Expanse series I've just started. I might have to make an exception for this series as I want them all now!

message 26: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59907 comments I'm trying to restrict the number I buy as well. I've set a guideline that I won't pick up something unless it's on my wishlist. Since there are 1100 books on my wishlist, I'm not sure how successful this plan is going to be in reducing the books to read shelf. I've already sabotaged myself and broke my rule.

message 27: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I picked up two more books today:

As Meat Loves Salt As Meat Loves Salt by Maria McCann

The Vintner's Luck The Vintner's Luck (Vintner's Luck, #1) by Elizabeth Knox

message 28: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Jan 15, 2016 04:31AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments ... I'm on a bloody run.

So yesterday's purchase was Our Lady of Alice Bhatti - Pakistan and snakes.

Today I got my package of cheap books I bought the other day.

The Third Reich - written by a Chilean author. Wooo. However. Set in Spain...
The Sirens of Baghdad - Iraq
Strip Jack - it would fit the black and white cover but the title is blue. Which is the style in Australian publishing, black and white image with title in colour. I'm stuffed.
The African Equation - seems to be set in Sudan
The Sands of Ammon - may possibly be in Iran and Egypt?

One win with The Dinner - Netherlands.

Oh, but I want to read them all.

message 29: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Nice haul rusalka, you got quite a diverse collection! Lots of traveling going on. ;)

message 30: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Indeed! Just not to the right places for this yearly challenge :P

message 31: by Lisa (last edited Jan 15, 2016 04:16AM) (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Great haul Rusalka! Maybe you could get a bonus badge for travelling to all the places that are not part of the yearly challenge? ;)

message 32: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11263 comments That's a good one, Lisa!

message 33: by Sarah (last edited Jan 15, 2016 05:21AM) (new)

Sarah (sarahlou29) | 1302 comments Wow so many new books brought already. I'm jealous =P Some of these books look interesting and so many great deals. I've a £4 gift voucher for Amazon, so will see what I can find in the kindle books section =]

I'll keep that in mind for the year end wrap-up next January.

message 35: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments One more book for my collection:

Mage's Blood Mage's Blood by David Hair

message 36: by Delitealex (new)

message 37: by Mariab (new)

Mariab | 3059 comments D.L. wrote: "Am planning on picking up Mortal Instruments books :) Anyone read them? Thoughts?"

I read them. They are entertaining.
But is another "streched" series

message 38: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I broke down and bought The MaddAddam Trilogy this afternoon. Now, I can start Oryx and Crake. I better like it now!

message 39: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 2101 comments Cherie wrote: "I broke down and bought The MaddAddam Trilogy this afternoon. Now, I can start Oryx and Crake. I better like it now!"

I liked the first one quite a lot. Recently started the second one, about 70 pages into it now, not quite getting the same feeling from it, but not bad.

message 40: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 2101 comments I promised to myself when I started gophering for the Geo challenge that I would not - WOULD NOT - buy any books because of it. Well, y'all know how well that promise was kept...

So far I've bought these for the Geo challenge:
Alberta Skies (for, well, Alberta, and it was only 0.99$)
Old Whaling Days (whaling)
Clear Waters Rising: A Mountain Walk Across Europe (vacation in the mountains)
Trinity (New Mexico)
The Ruins (Mexico, but I wanted it anyway, so it doesn't count)
Life and Death at Hoover Dam (engineering)
Interrogating Ellie (set in Austria)
Itsy Bitsy Spider (set in Denmark)
Interrupted Aria (set in Venice)
Johnny Doesn't Drink Champagne (involves Tower of London)
Children of the Mechanism (child labour)
WOOL Gathering (wool in title)

Erm, I think this is becoming too painful... Let's just ignore any books bought for Africa, Asia, and Australia, shall we?

message 41: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I feel your pain, Camilla!

message 42: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11263 comments Bad girl... :)

message 43: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I read Mortal Instruments, D.L. I really liked them :) a few of us did a Buddy read for the first book last year. The discussion may still be in the buddy reads folder :) watch out for spoilers though :) Hope you enjoy the series!!

message 44: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59907 comments Nice haul Camilla. Don't berate. Enjoy! :)

message 45: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Anyone want to gamble. We haven't seen Samantha check in in ages I say when she shows up again we shall se 57 new purchases

message 46: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59907 comments Hehehe! At least 57. I like the randomness of your guess, Travis.

message 47: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I bought another novella for the expanse series The Butcher of Anderson Station. So the two read together will feel like a full book. I want to space the main books out as i don't want to be left hanging for the "next" book. Just as well there are some novellas to help pad things out.

message 48: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Audible sent me an email that 3 books in my wishlist were in the 3 for 2 sale so I got Seveneves, The Border and then the third on my wishlist was Ghost Fleet: A Novel of the Next World Warbut I passed on that one and got the The Water Knife which is a gamble since I really didn't like windup girl but it sounds like a good concept ao try it out

message 50: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I really want Seveneves. Fingers crossed for you on The Water Knife. It's quite different to Windup Girl. I found the world easier to visualise. Plus it's shorter.
