Around the Year in 52 Books discussion

I'm not even a quarter of the way through the list of options and there are SO MANY that I want to read! Is anyone else having this problem? I think I'm going to search out another group and do the Rory Gilmore list as a separate and ongoing, multi-year challenge! I love whoever came up with this suggestion! Love and maybe hate a little because this year I was planning on making my tbr list SHORTER!!!

It turns out that there are TWO PAGES of Rory Gilmore reading challenge groups! Good grief!

I'm not surprised there are so many groups. That challenge has been circulating for awhile now. I hope you find a good group that will encourage you. Now you get to be choosy! :D

I have this list in a spreadsheet (of course, it's what I do!) and am very loosely using it, also as a multi-year - well, lifetime - challenge. There are a lot of books on the list that I have very little interest in reading though.

What I do love about it is that it's so varied that I really think there's something on it for everyone!

I think I liked a Listopia list back in the day, and will consult it from time to time. Most of it is on my TBR anyway, but what isn't on it physically yet, would overwhelm me, so the books are kind of in limbo currently.

Thanks! After I went to bed last night, I decided to do this very thing today - and either put it in a Word document or spreadsheet (like Jody).

Like Jody, there are several that I have very little interest in, but maybe when I get close to finished, I'll read them all, just to say I did.

I couldn't figure out how to "like" a listopia list yesterday. How does one do that? I kinda thought that would be the easiest way to keep track here!

And after joining one of the groups yesterday, I thought about watching the tv series again! I don't have time for such temptations! These challenges want me to make this the year of reading!

When I looked for a book to fill in the Rory challenge week, I quickly saw that there were too many books in which I wasn't interested to tackle this challenge. But today my spreadsheet-mania kicked in, I copied the list and noted down the books I read, was planning to read, would maybe read and would never read.

I never watched the Gilmore Girls show, but for those who did, can you tell me if Rory spoke about the books or do we only see her read them?

I would say it's a mixture of the two. She's seen reading plenty of books but then she also speaks about them, whether with other characters or during the classroom scenes.

I also suspect that some of the books in the list are actually read by her mother. The whole show is about their relationship. Rory is the bookworm focused on getting into an Ivy League school and the mother is more rebellious (got pregnant as a teenager and moved out on her own). So it would fit that some of the books are the ones that she jokingly mentions to poke fun at Rory's classics (like the Stephen King entries). That's a complete guess because I wasn't really focused on the reading challenge when I watched the show. I just can't see Rory reading some of the ones on the list.

If you're writing about the website, I don't think the Listopia website is there anymore. They do have a listopia on GoodReads, but in this instance, I used the List Challenges website that has a section for famous book and movie lists. They have a "print" button for lists, so I just used that and copied and pasted it onto this thread for easier access for everyone.

I love using that http://www.listchallenges.com/ to log in and keep track of the plethora of various lists that I use.

Really? I definitely found her reading list to be plausible. LOL It's probably because my Read List is similar ("The Lorax" by Dr. Seuss is on my Read List with "Lysistrata" by Aristophanes and "Candide" by Voltaire). One needs a recreational reading now and again to reset one's brain.

I'm doing the Rory Gilmore challenge as a personal and probably a lifetime challenge.
There's no way I'll ever read all the books. There a quite a few I don't have any interest in, but it's a fun challenge. So far I've read 27 of the books, so I have a long way to go!

Right now I use www.listchallenges.com and I have a list in another group here on Goodreads: Marina's corner to keep track of my challenge.
Maybe I should considering using a spreadsheet :-)

I know, right? As soon as I started looking at that week's challenge for this group, my curiosity for the Rory list just grew!

Part of me now wants to watch the Gilmore Girls a second time but if I did that, I wouldn't get my reading done. I've read about 25 of the books on the list, but four of them I read so long ago, I want to read them again.

And Marina, I love your Marina's Corner thread! And I love that the BBC list is in there too! So many books to read!

I joined the same group as well, but I don't know how active I'll be over there yet. I'm going to focus on this group, but it turns out that a number of books I picked are on the Rory list without my even looking at the list!

I have several lists like that. It is DEFINITELY a multi-year project. LOL

Yep. I use that List Challenges website a LOT, and have about 83 book challenges from the ALA's banned/challenged books and the BBC Lists to the Time Magazine's "Best of" and the complete Dr. Seuss bibliography.

I'm a little bit addicted to the List Challenges website too. I have a few lists in a spreadsheet from there, thankfully there is quite a lot of duplication! The main one I'm working on is the "BBC's thinks you've only read 6" list - which apparently the BBC never said, but almost all of the books on there are ones that I want to read. I'm up to 43/100, and I've got another 27 on that list slotted in for challenges this year (although whether or not I actually end up reading all 27 is another thing entirely).

Guilty! It was my suggestion. I did not watch the series faithfully, only saw some episodes when my sister was watching. I have this more as a lifetime challenge.

I stay for hours in the List Challenges website whenever I go there. So addicting.

I've wanted to do this challenge since finishing the series. I think I'll get started this year. Thanks for the nudge!

I have that one, too! Love it! I've added it to my spreadsheet that contains the top banned books and the "Must Reads for College-Bound Students" List. I also have the Nintendo Classic Books List for both the U.S. and the U.K. versions. Apparently, there was a Nintendo video game that just had books for the Nintendo DS game console.

BTW, thank you! I truly need a fun book now, I just finished Charlotte's Web (with my daughter) and I think we are both traumatised. And I knew what was coming!

So... I've been adding from Rory's list to my TBR, more specifically a new shelf for this challenge. I'm convince I won't read all of it, so I'll add another shelf for discarded works once I decide, but the reason I'm reviving this thread now is a question I have.

See, I'm bugged by the choices they've picked for her to read. In my humble opinion, she could have investigated more widely across the planet, and favoured also authors other than men. I feel she's quite a feminist in how she lives her life, independent yet warm in her relationships, and with an exceptionally strong sense of "what's the right thing to do". Usually she doesn't treat anyone badly either, at least if she can help it. Has anyone else noticed this sort of disconnect between reading choices and her personality?

I might participate as a side challenge. The short preview for the new Gilmore Girls episodes are getting me very excited! They're released November 25th!

Ahhh, I had no idea there was a teaser! I'm so excited for the reboot!!! :D It is kind of a bummer that it's only four parts though. Thanks for the heads up!
