Amber Martingale Terri wrote: "But if it's a progress report and you're totaling up the pages each time, aren't you essentially adding in the same pages each time? I mean, if you read 10 pages in a book since your last progress ..."

It's not the same pages over and over, Terri. I give exact page numbers for where I stopped on that particular book when I finish each chapter. If a chapter starts on page 1 and ends on page 7, like Murder on the Prowl: A Mrs. Murphy Mystery does, I post that I stopped the chapter on page 7. Then I total up how many pages I read for the day. If a book ends on a certain page #, I also note that I finished the book.

This said, I'm not adding in the pages I read yesterday because I left my # sheet at home today and w/o that paper, I don't remember the total from yesterday.

I do it this way because it's easier for me to do it that way, rather than the method used by some others.

Brenda | 2434 comments Amber, see if I'm understanding this:

In Message 1342, you reported The Crediton Killings page 191. The next day in Message 1344, you reported the same book with page 206.

So you actually read 15 pages? Yet you added the 191, and then you added 206. This means you added 191 pages twice. If you do this every day, you are way overinflating our total.

Everyone else here finishes the book first, then adds the pages from that book to the total. It would help us all if you could do it that way, too.

message 1353: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale You do your updates your way and I'll keep doing mine my way, Brenda. You and Terri seem to be the only ones who complain about the way I keep track of MY pages and MY books.

Brenda | 2434 comments Amber wrote: "You do your updates your way and I'll keep doing mine my way, Brenda. You and Terri seem to be the only ones who complain about the way I keep track of MY pages and MY books."

Sorry you took my post personally, Amber. You can certainly keep track of your pages any way you want. This thread is a team effort and we all have to play by the same rules or our effort to reach 1.5 million pages is wasted.

message 1355: by Amber (last edited Sep 10, 2016 09:23AM) (new)

Amber Martingale I disagree that it's wasted effort. As long as we get there by the end of the year, it's a success. In any case, I've never seen anything that says that I have to use the same format everyone else does. Granted it may have been somewhere on page 1 and I haven't read post #1 yet, so unless someone points out said rule, I'll keep using whatever method works for me.

message 1356: by Brenda (new)

Brenda | 2434 comments Amber, you've listed The Crediton Killings four times, showing 27, 166, 191, and 206 pages respectively. You've added, with just this one book, 590 pages to the grand total. Goodreads indicates this book is 386 pages.

It's wasted effort if the grand total is wrong.

I agree with Brenda, this is a team effort and we should contribute as seamlessly as possible - most of us here are adding up numbers after we finish reading books - most used format is folks are adding the link or cover of the book and adding the last total and the number of pages in the book(s) completed.

message 1360: by Anna Maria (new)

Anna Maria | 187 comments Who exactly is responsible for this challenge. It seems that is the person who should start checking this whole number thing. I have started with the thought of reading the book and then when finished add the pages, maybe at times with error in numbers :) If this is changed as we go along please advise everyone. Because it is really starting to get frustrating not knowing if the totals are correct or not.

message 1361: by Terri (new)

Terri Wino (terriwino) | 2488 comments Wow. See, this is why I tend to stay away from challenges like this. I am way too OCD and can't take it when I know numbers are clearly wrong because when the people who are TRYING to keep everyone on track and double-check each other start getting attacked by the ones who seem to have a problem with basic addition. We ALL make mistakes at times and I welcome when someone checks my math and discovers an error on my part and corrects it.
Sometimes honest mistakes happen when people forget to refresh and add their number to an old total. It happens, someone else corrects it, and we move on. Sometimes 2 people post at the same time. Again, someone catches it and corrects. If everyone adds using the same method of ONLY listing a book once you have finished it, that cuts down on a lot of confusion.
Despite what you may think, Amber, you are over inflating our total. Look at your last post -- you're telling me that READ over a thousand pages between posting that time and the one before? In all the same books?
Having put my 2 cents in, I think I'll just bow out of this particular challenge. It's so not worth the frustration when people get hostile when you're just trying to be helpful and keep things accurate.
Life's too short and I have too many books to read! :)

Hopefully we can get back to just doing our totals.

Amber, Brenda, and Terri were only trying to help, and always grateful if someone double checks my adding up.

This is a challenge to enjoy, not upset new members who want to join in, like Willowblue, please do continue Willowblue.

I personally finish one book, and when finished add the book to this total and also my own list, which is by far the best way, if you add 3-4 books at a time that is fine too.

Please do try to stay friendly, we here to help each other only.

That is what has made this group so good !

message 1369: by Terri (new)

Terri Wino (terriwino) | 2488 comments Thanks Sean. If we all agree to only add pages once a book has been finished, things would run a lot smoother.
However, I also know at this point our total is way off due to Amber's method of re-adding the same pages in every time she lists her progress on a book. As Brenda pointed out earlier, she added over 500 pages on just the one book as part of her progress.
At this point, unless someone goes through all the posts, why keep adding to a number we KNOW is not accurate?

Oh dear! My mistake for not keeping a closer eye on this thread.

Firstly, and most importantly, this thread was only ever meant as a FUN and RELAXED challenge. I was never going to get a professional adjudicator in to add up the figures to see if they were 100% accurate!! We did have a couple of members who were keeping an eye on totals but I fully appreciate that life gets in the way and things can go off track. What I'm really bothered by are that some members here are hurt and upset - understandably so and I don't want anyone feeling like that. Not at all!

So, in the next few days, my daughter is going to go through this thread and add up numbers so far. I'm not going to swear that the end result will be 100% accurate, it will be what it will be. I'm sure you can appreciate how time comsuming it's going to be anyway.

A chilled, relaxed approach is best and please just add up total pages of your book read, be it a GR total or an Amazon one, it doesn't matter!! We just wanted to see if the end total could be achieved in a round about way... that's all! But mostly that you enjoy just being part of the challenge ... no stress allowed!!

I hope you're all ok with this.

Janet

message 1384: by Terri (new)

Terri Wino (terriwino) | 2488 comments Sounds like a plan, Janet! Absolutely does no one expect 100% accuracy! We're all striving for the same goal to be met and, hopefully, we will continue to check each other on the way. :)
This is just the best group of people here. <3

I wasn't talking about anyone in particular really about being upset. I would just hate that anyone here not be happy. We're a friendly group usually and rub together fairly well. I appreciate any help here on keeping a tally. You should have seen my daughter's face when I told her the good news! Lol! She's fine with it though so no worries there. Please just continue to add your numbers as you read your books (one at a time might be better but whatever suits you best) and remember that the fun is sharing our love of reading. Always!! I will keep an eye on things from here on in. :)

You'd end up reading a thousand or more pages a day if the public library and the radio were your only affordable means of entertainment, Terri.

Sean: Please see the affordability part of my reply to Terri. And I DID apologize, when I remembered to, whenever it sounded like I had offended someone for correcting my mistake before I myself caught it.

Terri (again)/Brenda: Wasn't really upset/offended by either of you. If either of you HAD offended me, you'd have seen a lot more usage of the "(bleep)(bleep)" convention than you did.

I'm used to using the method that I was using because it's also the method I use for my self-imposed GR challenge here, with the additional complication of calculating how many pages I've read FOR THE DAY (or the weekend): https://www.goodreads.com/challenges/...

As you two will notice, GR says I am 1 book BEHIND schedule for the year compared to where I was in the 2015 Challenge.

Janet: As you said, life gets in the way. Starting today, I'm gonna try to just use the books I've finished.

Ter'e: I don't think any of us are actually TRYING to be funny. I think it's just working out that way.

The Crediton Killings 378 (finished 9/9)
Easy Weeknight 254 (finished today)=632 pages
