tweetie_K | 7 comments Hey guys! I know there are tons of posts on this topic already, but I tend to be a little picky so I figured I'd make a separate thread.

I definitely love a good romance (it's an addiction, really), but I don't like when it completely overtakes everything else in the book. In paranormal/ fantasy, there's so much cool stuff going on, I like a good plot with my romance. That's really the big one I have trouble filling. But other qualifications:

1) I like characters that have personality! Especially humor. But this goes to what I said above. I don't want my characters to be sucked into an insta-love, lusty, brainless haze (though lust is encouraged). They each gotta stand on their own and play off each other.
2) Female, first-person POV is ideal
3) Difficult one: but characters that aren't teenagers would also be ideal
4) No vampires (way too overdone) or werewolves please! I like more interesting supernatural creatures
-For example, I loved the Charley Davidson Series (she's a grim reaper and he's the son of Satan), or Menagerie (not romance at all, but the point is that it had unique entities)
5) I like a strong male character (who doesn't?), but if he's a complete asshole who has no redeeming qualities other than his abs and an erection, then I'd really rather not.

I know that it'll be hard to find a book that has all of these, but if anyone has recommendations on books that fill most/all of these I'd really appreciate it!!

Thanks guys :)

P.S.:
6) I put this later because I find it's pretty rare with PNR what with all the sex-crazed creatures (don't wanna limit myself too much), but if there's anything with some romantic suspense (for example, they start out disliking each other, or just in general aren't obsessed with each other after 48 hours), that would be a much appreciated bonus.

Betelgeuze | 69 comments I highly recommend Nalini Singh. She always writes very strong female characters who are equal to the male lead.

Sherrilyn Kenyon female leads are also strong independent women with non douchebag men.

What I like the most about these two authors is that they are not only great character writers but they also are great world builders. In the case of Nalini Singh each book in both her Guild-Hunter and Psy-Changeling series has it's own plot revolving around the two characters, but they are set in a world with an overarching story line. Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark-Hunter series has one of the most extensive mythological worlds in PNR.

Denisa | 6 comments You could try Shannon Mayer's Rylee Adamson series, it's pretty good and it's what you're looking for :)

Robin (rockin_robin) | 81 comments I'd second the Nalini Singh recommendation, the Psy-Changeling series was outstanding.

Also Carolyn Jewel My Wicked Enemy (My Immortals #1) by Carolyn Jewel ; her My Immortals series features demons as the good guys and the women are mostly witches (powerful in their own right). My Wicked Enemy is the first book of the series.

And, one of my favorite authors--Christine Warren. Heart of Stone (Gargoyles, #1) by Christine Warren . Her gargoyle series is great. It has plot, humor, romance --I've thoroughly enjoyed all of them so far.

Dahrose | 32 comments For a great series that is big on FUN, try the Southern Sanctuary books by Jane Cousins. There are 7 in the series so far and each book has a fantastic couple and lots of crazy/interesting secondary characters.
Lots of action, steamy/sweet romances, alpha males and great female leads who are strong, quirky and independent.

There aren't many authors who can make me laugh out loud but Jane Cousins succeeds. Start with book 1 - To Woo A Warrior
To Woo A Warrior (Southern Sanctuary, #1) by Jane Cousins

That looks like a stitch. I've added it to my TBR file, thanks.

Lindsey (ucdlindsey) I think you might really enjoy the Parasol Protectorate series. The main character is female (though I don't think it was 1st person POV), and there is humor and romance. No teenagers. I admit there are vampires/werewolves, but the main character is not one, she is a "more interesting supernatural." ;) And it's not love at first sight for sure.

Soulless (Parasol Protectorate, #1) by Gail Carriger

Shelby | 71 comments Something Witchy This Way Comes (Something Witchy, #1) by Veronica Blade Half-Blood (Covenant, #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout Bound (The Crystor, #1) by C.K. Bryant Wicked (A Wicked Saga, #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days, #1) by Susan Ee Black Heart (Cursed Hearts, #1) by R.L. Mathewson Prince of Wolves (The Grey Wolves, #1) by Quinn Loftis Captured (The Captive, #1) by Erica Stevens Tall, Dark & Lonely (Pyte/Sentinel, #1) by R.L. Mathewson

The first few are young adult and the last few are vampire/werewolves but I promise they're great reads and funny. I hope you find something you like. Happy reading!

Anne Enchanted Inc series.

To me, almost like Harry Potter meets Lucille Ball.

Enchanted, Inc. (Enchanted, Inc., #1) by Shanna Swendson

And, although you don't particularly like vamps, I would suggest the Hex series. There is a vamp boyfriend but its more about her than him.

50 Ways to Hex Your Lover (Hex #1) by Linda Wisdom

And her Demon's Lexicon trilogy is worth a read as well The Demon's Lexicon (The Demon's Lexicon, #1) by Sarah Rees Brennan
