Cruel but fair

message 54: by Nikks (new)

Nikks | 521 comments I was trying to decide if an author that has the 'de, du' or similar in their name, eg. Daphne du Maurier, should be 'd' or an 'm'. I decided where ever it fits best into my A-Z list. Is that cheating ? lol

message 55: by Em (new)

Em (emmap) | 2707 comments Good point! Categorise them as you see fit, I think I've counted them as D on my challenge.

message 56: by Louise (last edited Sep 14, 2012 08:55AM) (new)

Louise I counted du Maurier as 'D'. She's M on goodreads I think mainly because the system can't handle her surname but I've always seen her listed under 'D' in bookshops and libraries.

message 57: by Ian, Moderator (new)

Ian (pepecan) | 5088 comments Mod
I'd probably go with M, but as Em says, either way is OK.

message 58: by Nikks (last edited Sep 14, 2012 08:56AM) (new)

Nikks | 521 comments Thanks. I think she will be an 'm' for my list. On this occasion anyway as it suits my needs better. But I reserve the right to change it as I see fit in future challenges ! Lol

message 59: by Em (new)

Em (emmap) | 2707 comments Just scanned through my list and I've done both, clearly I've just suited myself...

message 60: by Nikks (new)

Nikks | 521 comments I'm sure there's no a-z author challenge police ! Lol so you won't receive a fine :-)

message 61: by Ian, Moderator (new)

Ian (pepecan) | 5088 comments Mod
Fines??? Now that sounds like a good idea to help pay for a mods Xmas do lol. Mind you we'd have to be very strict to get Liz over from Singapore.

message 62: by Nikks (new)

Nikks | 521 comments You could probably get enough for her flights if you tried really hard ! Lol

message 63: by Em (new)

Em (emmap) | 2707 comments Ian is officially appointed to the role of Police Inspector for A-Z Challenge - Ian can be Morse and I can be Lewis!!

I understand £80 is the going rate for speeding fines these days so if we use that as a guide for infringements, we'll be quids in by Xmas.

message 64: by Nikks (new)

Nikks | 521 comments That sounds perfectly acceptable. I think a charge for typos would be reasonable, and of course swearing :-D

message 65: by Ian, Moderator (new)

Ian (pepecan) | 5088 comments Mod
As a senior policeman I will be presuming it will be perfectly acceptable for me to order all my constables to change their evidence to suit my needs and then lie for 23 years about it.....YNWA

message 66: by Em (new)

Em (emmap) | 2707 comments Stranger than fiction!

message 67: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 651 comments Em It's £60, or you could do a £90 fine with an A-Z awareness course.

message 68: by Michael (new)

Michael Jecks (michaeljecks) | 14 comments Jo wrote: "I agree :) i did some research for X and it seemed to be only chinese authors but i am quite excited to try something like that"

Try reading Xenophon, the Anabasis. The first book about mercenary warfare, and a fascinating read. It's translated very well in several versions. The Persian Expedition I think it'll be more interesting than many of the Chinese books!

message 69: by Helga (new)

Helga Van rompaey | 7 comments Quite a nice challenge that I just discovered here. I'm certainly going to try too, starting with the book that I am reading, The illicit Happiness of other People, by Manu Joseph. 25 letters to go :)

message 70: by Ian, Moderator (new)

Ian (pepecan) | 5088 comments Mod
It'll be easier for you to keep track of if you set up your own thread Helga, but up to you. Enjoy the challenge.

Her Royal Orangeness (onlyorangery) | 30 comments I'm going to wait to start this on January 1 and see how close I can come to completing it in one year. I think it might be doable!

message 74: by Ian, Moderator (new)

Ian (pepecan) | 5088 comments Mod
No need to wait HRH - you could do it from September 1 for 12 months if you want.

message 75: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments I think if you take Ian's approach, it is totally do-able in one year. If you follow my example then good luck!

message 76: by Alberta (new)

Alberta Ross (authorshow4506833alberta_ross) | 38 comments Late in joining but going to give it go for 2014:) also doing A_Z of titles elsewhere so lets hope I don't get confused:)

message 77: by Em (new)

Em (emmap) | 2707 comments There's no time limit on this and one or two members have actually done it twice so welcome to the challenge! I am stuck on U and Z - I stay stuck, there are books I could read but I haven't actually got around to them. Seriously, could take me all year just to complete these two.

message 78: by Ellie (new)

Ellie M (elliemcc11) | 553 comments I wanted to get my current A-Z completed in 2013 but it didn't happen. Hopefully early 2014...

message 81: by Swimming (new)

Swimming Pancake | 29 comments Sounds like a brilliant idea I'll have to do it now ,stop stop forcing me to try. But it's reading so I'm fine.

message 82: by [deleted user] (new)

Is it too late to start this on Jan 1st next year?

message 83: by Em (last edited Dec 02, 2014 10:47AM) (new)

Em (emmap) | 2707 comments No Caroline, it's not too late, you can start whenever you like - it's on-going and some of us have done it more than once! Those of us who like extra challenge have devised A-Z's with a twist such as only new authors, only female authors or first names...

message 84: by [deleted user] (new)

Great, thanks. I'll set up a thread for it now :)

message 85: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments I've only got a few letters left, all in the one year too. Last time it took a couple.

message 86: by Ian (new)

Ian | 18 comments Just seen this challenge. I've been doing this for 12 years now, trying to find a new author for each letter each year. I don't always manage that but I've certainly found authors I might otherwise have not read. Some have been a joy to find, others gave been real shockers but it has been a fun way to break out of a reading rut.

message 87: by Maggie (new)

Maggie (mags51) | 29 comments I would like to join in this challenge please

Tania | 982 comments Set your own page up under the A-Z Author Challenge and happy reading. You can get ideas from other people doing it if you get stuck.

message 90: by Ian (last edited Jan 02, 2017 12:54PM) (new)

Ian | 18 comments Hi everyone - I've been doing an A-Z author challenge every year for 12 years now. I look for a different author for each letter every year and mostly manage but Q and X are particularly troublesome.

I also am the moderator for the Devon Book Club (feel free to drop by) - I am about to launch a challenge for A-Z of Devon authors (or maybe authors with books set in Devon if people struggle - - thoguh we have lots of fabulous local authors). I'll let you know how we get on

message 91: by Tania (new)

Tania | 982 comments Q is turning in to the bane of my life. Have look at a couple of authors and they just don't hold me. Even walked the library looking for Q's and nothing hit me.

message 92: by Ian (new)

Ian | 18 comments Qui Xialong writes books like a Chinese Inspector Morsel. I'm not a crime novel lover but these are interesting in terms of Chinese culture too. Chief Inspector Cheng is a poet and translator as well as a policeman. There are 7/8 books in the series. Be interested to know if you give it a try

message 93: by Ian (new)

Ian | 18 comments Inspector Morse even! Auto correct bah

message 94: by Tania (new)

Tania | 982 comments Thanks Ian will look into that

message 95: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Walker | 6 comments I might try this after finishing the series I'm on and the others that follow this one all by Cassandra Clare

Clare Flack | 3 comments Love this idea, looks like I'm starting with F ;-)

message 98: by Kate, Moderator (new)

Kate | 1633 comments Mod
Yes, absolutely Laura. Copy one of the other opening posts as a template if you need to. The challenge is for an A-Z of author surnames but some of us have chosen to do A-Z of book titles and other variations instead or as well. :)
