Everyone ready to set their reading goals for another year? I'm setting mine at 80 to start, and will increase it later if necessary. You can read more about the 2016 Goodreads Challenge here.

message 2: by Britney (new)

Britney (tarheels) | 142 comments I set it at 45 for now. I have other projects I am doing so I didnt want to set it to high and not make it.

message 3: by Leslie (new)

Leslie I got depressed & stressed last year by the challenge telling me that I was falling behind every time I logged into GR so this year I set my goal significantly lower at 104 (52x2). I figure I can always raise it later!!

Marisa (moretta) | 4145 comments Mod
I've done the same than the last year. I've set it at a level I think I can reach (200), and I'll increase it later if necessary. I don't want added stress to my reading ;)

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) I've stuck with 175 again (although I'm not using GR to track it).

message 6: by Ruth (new)

Ruth Ferguson (ruthdfw) | 17 comments I feel so lame at 52 LOL but since I haven't met that goal b4 got start somewhere lol

message 7: by Nicole (new)

Nicole (nicolethecozybookworm) | 122 comments Now I feel silly, I set mine to 20. I can always raise it later on, but I'm starting out low with little pressure :-)

message 8: by Sally906 (new)

Sally906 I've set mine to 100 - can either raise or lower it as the year progresses

message 9: by LuAnn (new)

LuAnn (luannbraley) | 31 comments I've set mine at 100 this year. In 2014 I missed my goal of 214; in 2014 I missed my goal of 150. This year, those books are going DOWN! (I've got 2 already!)

message 10: by ☯Emily (new)

☯Emily Ginder | 58284 comments As usual, I set it for 50. I read a lot of long, classic books and find this a reasonable goal. I read for enjoyment and don't want to get frustrated trying to meet a goal. I would be more inclined to have a pages challenge!

Mary (Biblophile) | 4610 comments I set mine for 365 as I did 333 this year. I may have overreached, but it will be a challenge nonetheless.

Good luck to everyone reaching their goal.

message 12: by Betty (new)

Betty (bettylouise54) | 582 comments I set mine at 300 again. I read 363 books in 2015. I am actually trying to reach 365 this year. Good luck to everyone with their challenge.

message 13: by Dawn (new)

Dawn | 197 comments Over the last couple of years I have blown my goals out of the water! This year I have decided to go above and beyond for myself at 57. Which is a lot for me. Let the reading begin!!#

message 14: by Maureen (new)

Maureen | 1 comments Ok this is my first challenge going to try for 30. Wow cant believe people can read so much. That is great.

message 15: by Allison (new)

Allison | 158 comments Set mine to 200 again this year. It seems like I can make that goal somewhat easily and I don't want to feel pressured about reading.
Good Luck to everyone on their goals!

message 16: by Kellene (new)

Kellene | 167 comments Mine is set at 52. If I complete my other challenges, I will go beyond that, but I also don't want to feel pressured.

message 17: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 88 comments I set mine at 100.

message 18: by Chris (new)

Chris | 27 comments Please tell me how people read 100 books a year. I set my at 40 (of course I'll adjust if I know I'll reach it) even that is a lot since I am a single parent with a child in high school and work full time.

My son is grown with a family of his own, my husband works full time and at times 12 hour days. I'm alone a lot so it's easy for me to read a 100 books a year. I've been a reader all my life and wouldn't know what to do without a book in my hands or piles in my house.

message 20: by Julesy (new)

Julesy | 1411 comments In 2015, I set my goal at 80 books and completed 91. I'm going with the same goal of 80 books for 2016 since I'm averaging 1.5 books a week to complete.

message 21: by Melodie (new)

Melodie (melodieco) | 5280 comments I set it at 110 again. I beat that in 2015, so think it's a good number for me.

message 22: by Jill (new)

Jill Tool I set mine for 130

message 23: by Kellene (new)

I know what you mean. I single-parented 2, less than 2 years apart, and my reading seriously diminished. But now that they are grown, I read a lot more. I also read several books at a time, and have them all over the place.

Do you use another site or an spreadsheet/database?

message 25: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Williams (carsinger) | 57 comments I set my goal at 32 books this year. I met my last years goal of 30 and wanted to up it, but not significantly. The seasonal challenges in this group definitely motivate me to meet my yearly goal. Happy reading to all :)

message 26: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Hernandez (saniy95231) | 81 comments since my reading being low these last few years I did only 50

message 27: by Erin L (last edited Jan 03, 2016 05:27PM) (new)

Erin L (wellreadmoose) | 505 comments I'm setting mine at 100 again. Working full time it can be a challenge and I might regret it with half marathon training this year, but hey - audiobooks, right?

I actually try to listen to audiobooks on my commute to and from work which is an hour or more each way, audiobooks while I run, I also read while I eat lunch, and read before bed.

Essentially being a hermit helps too. I could go out, but there's this book I'm reading...

When I was nursing, I could read almost a book a day. Definitely depends on your stage of life!

message 29: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) So true, Carolyn!

I am on disability now. Have no husband, no kids, one dog. So, I get plenty of reading in.

message 30: by Tonya (new)

Tonya De Lige | 177 comments I set my goal at 50 again this year. Last year I barely did 20 the last couple of years. I didn't finish any challenge. I now attribute it to how much I was on social media. I plan on cutting back this year and focusing on my health; mind, body and soul. Part of that is getting back into reading. I really do feel much better emotionally when I read more.

message 31: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly | 678 comments I started off low last year and had to keep raising it. ;) I got thru 210, so I'm gonna aim for 215. We'll see how it goes. :)

message 32: by Linda (new)

Linda (rudylkr) | 8978 comments I set mine for 110 which always seems reachable. I think in 2015 I set a personal best at 123 books, so that's the secondary goal.

message 33: by Valerie (new)

Valerie | 440 comments Last year was the first time I ever tracked. I managed to do 213, but I had an injury that kept me from doing some of the things I normally do in the summer...so I read more.

I am setting my goal for 150, and will raise it if it looks like I am on pace to do more. (Right now I am ahead, but I had break for Christmas, and did a New Year's Day read marathon and polished off three books!)

I'd love to get to 200 books in a year again, but I just haven't been able to fit it in. I think it's because I'm reading too many things I just don't enjoy and they take me longer to finish.

message 35: by Ruth (new)

Ruth Ferguson (ruthdfw) | 17 comments I can only dream about reading that many books in a year!

Erin wrote: "Kimberly wrote: "I started off low last year and had to keep raising it. ;) I got thru 210, so I'm gonna aim for 215. We'll see how it goes. :)"

Leslie aka StoreyBook Reviews (hugbandit7) | 170 comments I kept mine the same as last year, 175. I read more in previous years but I had more time to read (commuting time on a train) but when I got laid off I lost that 2 hours a day. don't think hubby would like it if I just plopped on the couch and read for 2 hours a day! LOL

message 37: by Gina (new)

Gina (gina_wbg) | 10 comments I've set mine for 26, to coincide with my own: the A-Z Author Challenge. If I complete it, I have a second grouping of A-Z authors I can begin reading from.

message 38: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I set mine to 25, which is 50% more than what I read last year.

message 39: by Gary (new)

Gary Sundell | 2274 comments I dropped my goal to 30 this year, even though I exceed my 60 book goal last year. I have a number of doorstopper novels I want to read this year, including making an additional major dent in The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. I will adjust the goal upward as the year progresses. I am already 1 book ahead of my goal.

The Wheel of Time definitely requires dropping your goal. I did a reread of the series when A Memory of Light came out and dropped my goal from my usual 100 books down to 50 that year.

message 41: by Gary (last edited Jan 08, 2016 06:46PM) (new)

Gary Sundell | 2274 comments Wheel of Time weighs a lot less on my Nook. I have all but the last 2 books in HC as well, although they are in a box in my spare bedroom and finding which box they are in was more trouble than it was worth. A while back B&N had a sale on the series and I snatched up the whole ebook series.

message 42: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl Mallon Webb (cherylannwebb) | 8 comments Last year I over shot 50 by a mile. This year I hope I didn't get too ambitious at 125!!!

message 43: by Annamarie (new)

Annamarie (planewxgirl) | 71 comments Chris!

I have a full time job and part time as well. Plus volunteer and teach people to read. I still find time to read every day. Its taking 30mins of my morning or evening sometimes. And then there are days Im waiting for someone to show up and I just open a book and read.

I think if you are not a speed reader you could just keep your book at hand with you and pop it open when you have a min or two. Sometimes you may be waiting in a grocery line and just start reading.

I have read over a hundred books in a year easily doing it that way. Mostly though I read in the morning when I wake and before I sleep at night.

I'm not a speed reader, but I generally average two books a week, although that changed slightly last autumn with the start of a new job. I read on the bus, during lunch breaks, before bed each night, and whenever I can find the time to fit it in. Due to the messed up schedule of my bus route, I often have to leave an hour earlier than usual to get to my destination, and then I find a quiet corner of the mall and read for 30-45 minutes before I have to work.

That being said, I am already two books behind this year, but I always seem to start out the year that way. Hopefully I will be caught up again by end of the month.

Sorry for the delay Marisa - I was offline for a bit (reading!). I'm also a member of Booklikes and I use their challenge widget to track my yearly challenges now, since they have re-reads built into their system and they get counted. (and I prefer the format of BL.)

Speaking for myself, I don't have any kids; I work 4 days a week and I watch very little TV and I rarely go out. If I weren't married, I'd be reading even more, lol. Reading is my primary source of relaxation and entertainment, so it's gets a lot of my time.

The great thing about the reading challenge is that it's a personal one, and whatever number anybody comes up with is a number to be respected, whether it be 10, 50, 100 or 300.

Andrea (anniec85) | 75 comments Hi all,

I took some time off from Goodreads over the last year while becoming a mom. Needless to say, I barely had time to read last year. This year, I'm ready to get back at it, but I'm also realistic with the time I have. My goal is 10 books this year, but I'm hoping that I pass that!

Thank you for the info, I'll like the site, although I've integrated calibre and goodreads now, so I don't know if changing is nice now.

message 49: by Skeetor (new)

Skeetor | 55 comments I had a lot of personal stuff the last half of this year so I have been off for quite a while. This year we will be moving in the spring but I think I might be able to manage 50 books for the year.

I totally understand. I've been on GR and BL for 2+ years now because I don't want to give up my groups here on GR. But as time goes on (a long time!), I'm on BL more and GR less. I don't have any plans to leave GR, but I have stopped reviewing here. It's just too much to keep up with.
