Sci-fi and Heroic Fantasy discussion

I'm a big fan so Simmons and his Hyperion. If there is a similar IQ SF that is not gonna be next teen trilogy, I would like to know.

For overall "intelligence" I might go with Red Mars or Neal Stephenson. For something with the same type of universal conflict/small scale conflict scope of Hyperion, I would go with A Fire Upon the Deep.

A newer SF book that I really enjoyed was Kaja Star: No Place Like Home. The plot is significantly different from Hyperion, but I felt that it would fall into the similar IQ category. This is the first book in the series, and I am waiting for the next one to give a final judgement, but if you are looking for wit and intelligence with an epic conflict and interesting characters, it is worth a read.

I'm not only new here but new to the sci-fi genre.
I recently stumbled across a really interesting series called the Loralynn Kennakris series. The books have great characters, a strong, fascinating female MC, really awesome world building, great writing and intricate plotting. I'm not sure they fall into the heroic fantasy genre but you can grab the sample and see if it's your thing. Well worth the read.

I read The Martian, High Couch of Silistra and The IX last year and they are all really good.

You might like Michael Flynn's Spiral Arm series for its scope. The January Dancer is the first. The books are all complete stories, though there are connections.
