How about Pompeii by Robert Harris. It's not a mystery, we all know what happens, but it is written from the point of view of a civic employee who is trying to figure out what is happening.

There was a fictional book about the Johnstown Flood - In Sunlight, in a Beautiful Garden by Kathleen Cambor. Not sure if it is a thriller yet or not.

No, it's not a thriller. My book group read it -- much more just good old historical fiction.

That is a GREAT book, Jan C. I think it was the first book I'd ever read by Erik Larson, spurring me on to read his others.

Most "disaster thrillers" people have recommended aren't really about the events themselves, but "normal people" surviving in these situations. I'm looking for something specifically with main characters like seismologists or vulcanoligsts or even meteorologists; books that actually prominently feature the disasters themselves and predicting and mitigating them.
It can be a small event, or a large scale, but I'm not looking for "end of the world" books. Are there any books out there like this?
For reference, I just readRogue Wave and really liked it.
