Read Harder Challenge Plans: 2016

Same here.... I will have read about 112 books by the end of December, but I still won't finish this challenge. I am picking books based on what I already have or can easily get via the library or borrowing. My biggest goal is to pare down my TBR pile as much as possible. The challenges are a great way to get to those books that have been languishing on my TBR forever.

I saw the challenge too late to complete it last year, so I started on this year's challenge in January. And I agree with posters above, read books you really want to read; I put aside at least one book on this challenge (original pick)-didn't love it, picked another book to satisfy that part of challenge. The whole point of the challenge is to broaden your reading horizons, so if you are reading outside your "comfort zone", then you have done that!!
1. Read a horror book - Hollow City
2. Read a non-fiction book about science - Blood: An Epic History of Medicine and Commerce
3. Read a collection of essays - The Chicken Chronicles: Sitting with the Angels Who Have Returned with My Memories: Glorious, Rufus, Gertrude Stein, Splendor, Hortensia, Agnes of God, The Gladyses, & Babe: A Memoir

5. Read a middle grade novel - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
6. Read a biography (not a memoir or autobiography) - Pope John XXIII: The Good Pope
7. Read a dystopian or post-apocalyptic novel - Four: A Divergent Story Collection
8. Read a book originally published in the decade you were born - The Handmaid's Tale
9. Listen to an audiobook that has won an Audie Award -Yes, Please

17. Read a non-superhero comic that debuted in the last three years - Girl in Dior
18. Read a book that was adapted into a movie, then watch the movie. Debate which is better. - Woodlawn: One Hope. One Dream. One Way.
19. Read a nonfiction book about feminism or dealing with feminist issues - A Year of Biblical Womanhood
20. Read a book about religion (fiction or nonfiction) - Fervent: A Woman's Battle Plan to Serious, Specific and Strategic Prayer

23. Read a play - Steel Magnolias

I only found out about this challenge a week ago, but I figured it would be fun to look back retroactively and see how many I've read so far this year and try to squeeze a few more in before December. I'm quite proud of myself for landing 11/24 completed, and 2 partway through:

I am thinking that I will not do this challenge in 2017, although I enjoyed it very much. It's just that I have so many books built up on my Kindle, waiting for me, as well as stacks of hardcopy books, also waiting, as I neglected a lot of "other" reading to do the 2016 challenge. If I can get through most of my existing books by mid-year, I could always pick up the challenge in the second half of the year. :-)

1) Read a horror book The Caretaker of Lorne Field: A Novel
2. Read a non-fiction book about science: Serving the Reich: The Struggle for the Soul of Physics under Hitler
3. Read a collection of essays: From Walden Pond to Jurassic Park: Activism, Culture, and American Studies
4. Read a book out loud to someone else (to my friend's daughter)Go, Dog. Go!
5. Read a middle grade novel: The Westing Game
6. Read a biography (not a memoir or autobiography): Florynce "Flo" Kennedy: The Life of a Black Feminist Radical
7. Read a dystopian or post-apocalyptic novel: Delirium
8. Read a book originally published in the decade you were born
The Man in the High Castle
9. Listen to an audiobook that was won an Audie Award: Not My Father's Son
10. Read a book over 500 pages long: City on Fire
11. Read a book under 100 pages: The Grownup
12. Read a book by or about a person who identifies as transgender: Transgender History
13. Read a book that is set in the Middle East: The Arch and the Butterfly

Nancy, I'm in the same situation you are concerning the challenge. You stated it so well. I echo your decision not to stress yourself out trying to complete the challenge by concentrating only on reading the remaining books. I too will get to those challenge books I have not read - perhaps this year, perhaps next. Definitely at a time when I don't feel as if I "have to". Reading should be enjoyable. These challenges do help me explore and many times enjoy new genres, authors, and subjects so I will continue participating in them.
