Darren (dazburns) | 2148 comments Hi Adrian!

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 96 comments I took a look at the Booklubben list for the 2017 Classics Bingo challenge, and the one that appeals to me most is Pride and Prejudice. I'd like to read it anytime from May on. Would anyone care to join me in a P&P buddy read?

message 859: by Adrian (new)

Adrian | 138 comments Hi Pink
Could you add Monkey: A Journey to the West (The Whaley translation) to the BR schedule for mid April, I believe there are at least 3 of us keen.
Thanks
Adrian

Will do :)

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 96 comments I would love to buddy read The Age of Innocence but couldn't start for at least a couple of weeks.

As you said....anytime from May on, until August. I'm going to Andalucia on vacation for two weeks in August and I won't have a 24/7 access to the internet.

Samanta (almacubana) | 372 comments Nadia wrote: "I'm starting The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton! Anyone interested in the book?"

Haven't read that in ages. Ugh, you're all giving me so many ideas. Where will I find the time?! :D :D

message 869: by Brina (new)

Brina I'd love to read it but in the summer.

message 870: by Brina (new)

Brina Didn't specify. I can read Age of Innocence in June, July, or early August.

message 871: by Michele (new)

Michele | 935 comments Brina wrote: "Didn't specify. I can read Age of Innocence in June, July, or early August."

Any of those work for me.

message 872: by Hailee (new)

Hailee | 277 comments I was just double checking that people are still up for buddy reading Don Quioxte in April?

If so, is everybody able to start at the beginning of April?

message 873: by Brina (new)

Brina Anyone able/up for Age of Innocence in June or July so we can plan?

message 874: by Michele (new)

Michele | 935 comments Brina wrote: "Anyone able/up for Age of Innocence in June or July so we can plan?"

Yep, either works for me.

It was Nadia who first mentioned it above, but I think she's already started reading. Tadiana also expressed interest :)

message 877: by Brina (new)

Brina Thank you, Pink. But we might have a group for the summer, you never know ;)

message 878: by Samanta (new)

I'm interested, too.

Pink | 5491 comments Brina wrote: "Thank you, Pink. But we might have a group for the summer, you never know ;)"

No problem. The discussion threads are already there anyway, so people can start reading and comment any time, not just during a designated buddy read. There's no strict rules :)

message 880: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments While I'm on this thread, I'll post a reminder of the buddy read schedule for March, incase people don't look in both places. I know most of these haven't gone ahead yet, but there's still the option to join in, or they can be rescheduled for later :)

War and Peace Link to previous group discussions here

MARCH
Doctor Zhivago Links to previous group discussion here
Le Morte d'Arthur: King Arthur and the Legends of the Round Table

Nobody else has commented on the buddy read threads for this, so I think it's been forgotten. I planned on reading it, but I picked up the wrong translation, so I have to find another copy. It's in the May polls for our 're-revisit the shelf' group read...currently in 3rd place.

Synthwaver | 16 comments I'd like to read The Age of Innocence so I'll be ready either for the buddy reading a couple of weeks later or wait and read it with Brina and Michele in summer.

message 888: by Susan O (last edited Mar 19, 2017 11:25AM) (new)

Susan O (sozmore) Pink, When you said you picked up the "wrong translation" for Dr. Zhivago, what were your referring to. The wrong one for the group read or just not the one you prefer. I got the one by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, who from what I've heard are good translators. Is there a better one? I think the group read link is the one by Max Hayward.

message 889: by Allison (last edited Mar 19, 2017 11:23AM) (new)

Allison | 55 comments If Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak doesn't win, I'd be interested in a buddy read! May would be fine or any month after really.

I'd also love any opinions about translations. I have the Manya Harari/Max Hayward translation.

message 891: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Susan, I borrowed the Pevear and Volokhonsky edition, who are much praised, heavy weights of Russian translations, though I seem to have avoided their work so far. Not on purpose, it's just worked that way for Russian books I've had on my shelf or have borrowed in the past. I've decided to read the Harari and Hayward translation, largely based on this article. https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.th...

Jon (jonpill) | 93 comments I'm going to be reading Finnegans Wake starting in about a week's time. I'm reading with a friend and we're planning to take it two chapters per week. If anyone wants to jump on that train here speak-up for Finnegan.

Oh go on then! I'll try and pick up a copy from the library.

message 896: by Lilly (new)

Lilly | 447 comments Wow!!! Finnegans Wake is tough.
I've always meant to read it some day - after I've found time for Ulysses ... ^^
Have you read the rest of Joyce, or will you just jump in as it goes ... ?

message 897: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Hang on, which version? I'm seeing A shorter Finnegans wake, edited by Anthony Burgess. A newer restored version (with 9000 corrections or amendments!) which sounds like a possibility, plus the originally published copy. I don't know about the publishing history of this, so I'm not sure which one to plump for. Original, or restored?!

So it is. Strange as it was only published about 10 years ago, but perhaps there's a reason it's out of print already. They have it for £12.99 on kindle, but I think I'll get the original version on paperback from my library.
