siriusedward (elenaraphael) | 2005 comments Thanks to one of your nomination I did try sisters from Dubliners..it was good...

Will do , Mark.Good advice.

Short stories are a good introduction to new-to-you-authors ... I loved Steinbeck and Willa Cather by reading their short stories through either Bingo or Group reads here.Of course Steinbeck's full length novel I haven't yet tried. But I will.

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 1285 comments I have read both Dubliners and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Which is why I am sure that Ulysses will take me a long time to get through.

My favorites from Dubliners are An Encounter; Little Cloud; Counterparts; and A Painful Case.

Nente | 746 comments Yes BlueFlower, I meant Lectures on Literature, and I haven't actually read the part on Ulysses yet - I planned for side-by-side reading. I haven't even tried to read it in English yet, one single time in translation years ago made me disgusted by page 50, so I dropped out.

Darren (dazburns) | 2148 comments count me in for Ulysses! (if it doesn't win the poll)

also, is anybody interested in
a buddy read of Friedrich Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra
Thus Spoke Zarathustra by Friedrich Nietzsche
I'm thinking New Year... February maybe...?

N.B. my interest was sparked by this excellent BBC documentary:

Pink | 5491 comments I'll join you for some Nietzsche in the new year. I think I saw that programme as well, did they cover some different people in other episodes? The only thing I've read by him was the Penguin little black classic book, which was really only snippets and not enough to sink my teeth into.

message 1107: by Darren (new)

Darren (dazburns) | 2148 comments there were 2 others, on Marx and Freud, but the Nietzsche one prompted me to want to explore more, and what better way than reading his stuff!? :oD

I read maybe half of Thus Spoke Zarathustra many years ago, but got hopelessly lost and gave up. I've been meaning to try it again ever since. Reading buddies will hopefully help. Count me in.

I've wanted to read Nabokov's lecture on Ulysses for a long time. But have never found it at a reasonable price. Were you disgusted by the translation, or disgusted by the content? - )

J_BlueFlower (j_from_denmark) | 2268 comments Yes, 288 pages, published in 1848. .... Could be nominated in the old-school category.

message 1117: by Nente (new)

Nente | 746 comments Mark, I don't suppose the translation was so very bad (mostly on circumstancial evidence: Russia has a very fair literary translation tradition, and classics generally get good translations eventually), but I was turned off by the style, yes. Long ago, really, time to put that behind.

I find it hard to imagine Ulysses translated into another language. The nuances that Joyce infused into the text seem so wedded to English. (But I don't mean to be chauvinistic, I'm sure that when translating Russian into English certain fine subtleties are also lost.)
Joyce's revolutionary style has always been an issue. Hopefully, with a new look, we can make it more fun! - )

Francisca | 281 comments Sweet! Starting the New Year with the French Revolution seems like a good bet to me :D

Shirley (stampartiste) | 1008 comments Would anyone be interested in a Buddy Read of Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand starting in January? This is my 2018 Bingo Challenge "A Classic You Have Put off Reading." I have always heard so much about it (although not exactly "what" it was about), but the 1,000+ pages have always seemed so daunting. So January seemed like a good time to finally get started (I figured a 3-month read?)

message 1125: by Isabella (new)

Isabella (angelvault) | 2 comments I’m reading Bleak House (have already started a tiny bit of it but will probably start over sometime this month since it’s been a long time). Would anyone want to do a buddy read with me? I️ think it would be most efficient to do video calls to talk about the book, if anyone is down for that

I could read it for the same bingo square, but January is a new year and I'm all excited about my reading plan. If you get into the fall with it still unread, post it again.

message 1131: by Luke (new)

Luke (korrick) Anyone want to tackle The Journey to the West with me? I'm talking unabridged, multi-volume sixteenth century Chinese classic. The mind is willing, but the soul is full of trepidation.

message 1132: by Adrian (new)

Cheers, Adrian. I owned the short version once upon a time, but when I came across a beautiful four volume complete set of the full work at a book sale, I couldn't resist.

message 1134: by Patrick (new)

Patrick I hope to read all the classic Chinese novels. I'm two volumes into the five-volume Penguin edition of The Story of the Stone.

Yes, I started reading it on January 1st. I'm only on page 30, but I'm enjoying it so far. Would you be interested in a buddy read to keep the momentum going?

I have the unabridged 4 volume Anthony C. Yu translation. Or rather, I bought them for the spouse as he is a fan of the old tv-show. lol
He says he will read them. I'm not sure if it will be right for me to read his birthday present before he does. Also, I have given myself a pretty crazy TBR already this year. But, uh, if you still haven't gotten around to it by next year, I'm game.

meanwhile...

I'm sure I remember drumming up some interest for a February Buddy Read of Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra, but I can't find where that discussion happened!
so, anybody interested...? :oD

Ha ha, we'll see. I'd like to get to them this year, but considering I have Daniel Deronda, Miss MacIntosh, My Darling, and other voluminous others on my list, perhaps I should hold off.

ROFL!
Right, tell you what, you get back to me when you've gotten through some of your voluminous others etc and I'll see where I am with my voluminous tomes. Maybe we can at least do the first volume this year? Or is that all wrong, and you need to read all four volumes in the same year (which, I admit has a certain appeal... one for each quarter).

Urk, I forgot to pick up my Norwegian translation during the holidays. Read Nietzsche in English? *twitch* I suppose... it's possible... if I can find a translation that doesn't render his übermench into superman. But... February? You're killing me here!

I don't especially need to read in any specific way, but I would prefer getting the entire JttW out of the way in one yearly fell swoop. Methinks I should fit it into my challenges for the sake of added incentive and less competition.

Daniel Deronda is on my list for this year but I'm just not ready for it yet :(
It's only January and I'm already starting to feel bogged down! So I'm going to try to do some reading that is a little less heavy duty than Daniel Deronda :)
If you go ahead, I'm interested in what you think about it. I really like George Eliot, but this one is Sooo Long!
Good luck! :)

message 1150: by Patrick (new)

Patrick I would, but I am deep in too many novels and other books at the moment. I read Daniel Deronda some years ago and have a very high regard for it.
