Katelyn Shaver (wayako) | 6 comments I finally snagged some time to start reading The Count of Monte Cristo...I was inspired to pick up Dumas's tale of betrayal and revenge thanks to an anime series called Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo. Wiki page and myanimelist (has more info and some watcher reviews, all of which hover around 9/10 and 10/10) page to explain more on the series, for those interested:

This got me wondering if anyone else here has also seen this series? And if so, what were your thoughts on it?

You would not think this story would work if adapted into a sci-fi would you? And yet it does work- very much so. They had a really creative group adapt the story into the series and the anime has some elements to it that were somewhat experimental but came off well (The method of animation used was unique to say the least.) It also helped that the soundtrack, storytelling pacing, and voice acting were all very well done and typical Gonzo quality (I saw the Japanese version so I cannot comment on the English voice acting)

Anyways, I am looking forward to seeing what the book is like and how it compares to the TV series. If you have read the book and have some time to watch the 24 episode series adaption, I would definitely recommend it; and then be sure to talk about it here so we can have a discussion. :p

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments I haven't read or seen this one, Katelyn, but thanks for an interesting thread!

Hopefully someone will come along who HAS either read the book, or seen the series :)

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments ps - I edited the thread to add the book picture up top. That makes the book associate with the thread. (A handy feature I often use when reading synopses of books - I often click thread starts to read more about the book.)

It's in the 'This topic is about' field, when you start a thread. You can type in the name of a book or an author, and a popup menu appears with some suggestions. (It doesn't show up on the app, only when you're visiting goodreads using a browser environment.)

Gavin (thewalkingdude) | 218 comments I've seen it, and read the book too. It keeps the key plot points in, but aside from that it's very different. Most obvious one: it has sci-fi in it (e.g Chateau D'if is in space), but also adds some characters (e.g Haydée).
Despite the differences, I definitely enjoyed it a lot too. Pulling off well an adaptation with such a changed setting can't be easy.
But as usual: book > adaptation. The book's too long for a 24 episode adaptation to really capture how good it is.
