"If you believe in equality, you're a feminist."

I am a man, and a feminist. And a proud member of this book club.
Welcome!

Jonathan (jonathandevink) | 32 comments Oh and even if you are not sure about being a feminist, we are all here to learn (more) about feminism, through reading and discussing books together. So welcome either way! :D

Christie Blair | 1 comments Pretty sure all genders are not only welcome, but highly desired! :)

Feminist men are highly rated in my book :)

Feminism and gender equality is not only a "women's issue" so I think it would be great to have the input of everyone regardless their gender identity. A benefit... to read and share awesome books like in other groups (?)

message 5: by Lesley (new)

Lesley (lcbeck) | 1 comments Of course you're welcome! Feminism is about everyone treating everyone else fairly and equally.

The more, the merrier!

message 6: by Jenna (new)

Jenna Even one of the moderators of the group is a man.

message 7: by Hayleen (new)

Hayleen (imhayleen) Of course ! I think that everyone can be a feminist regardless of gender. It is about making a world equal in opportunity and values for everyone and as Emma once said, the fight for equality is a common battle which also concerns men because we cannot make progress without half the population (:

message 8: by Sabina (new)

Sabina Tocco | 50 comments Exactly, we're here to learn and learn more.....I think Emma has created this group not only to share ideas and toughts about feminism, gender equality and so far and so forth, I think she has created this group also to inviate men to partecipate....feminism is not "we're women! Now we make the rules", feminism is supporting something you belive in as gender equality e.g. or struggle for recognition of rights of women in different countries.....I think this is an opportunity for men, a great opportunity! Emma said we are all welcome and I add (If I may) you are the first! :)

message 9: by Rachel (new)

Rachel "What sort of benefits can a guy like myself reap from being a part of a group like this?" you ask?

Same as any of us, I reckon. A better understand of the experience of others, a fresh perspective on our own experience, and important insight into how the two interact.

In addition to everyone else's encouragement, I'd like to point out the ways that feminism is not only about women, but about how gender discrimination in all of its forms should be eradicated. While the term comes from a desire to focus on women, this is because of the ways in which gender discrimination disproportionately affects women. But it does go both ways. Copy and pasting from a reply I wrote in another thread:

Additionally, I just want to make mention of how sexism also creates what might be termed toxic masculinity. The stereotyped, idealized masculine body/mind is a problem for all men, forcing them to adhere to certain ways of being and behaving. This is a problem both for men and further contributes to sexism toward women. It also reinforces heterosexual and cisgender superiority, meaning that queer men and transgender individuals will be very deeply affected by standards of masculinity.

Is Feminism Still Relevant?

Lolanoo7 Of course men are welcome here. I'm always so happy, when men call themselves feminists. Feminism is for everyone!

Everyone is welcomed! Feminism is not man hatred, how Emma said. Anyone could be a feminist and read about that and I think it's really wicked when men declare themselves feminists. That shows that "the battle" will be win! Welcome :)

Reis | 12 comments We're happy to have you if you want to read and learn more about feminism, Anthony! Whether you're a feminist or not, it's always wonderful to expand your knowledge of other people's views.

I'd also like to point out that "gender" isn't only about women and men. To exclude everybody from this movement that isn't female or a woman would not only contradict so many things feminism promotes but would also limit it to certain stereotypes this society has built up...
