I absolutely love Ron, I think one of the reasons people don't is that they see the movies before reading the books and he's portrayed as an comic ginger sidekick for the majority of them.

Wow, this got long! Sorry, I actually came here because I saw a bit of hate about him and needed to join my fellow Ron fans!

I think the reasons why a lot of People have issues with Ron or do not like him, is because he is like it was said before just a normal human being. And it seems that People want extraordinary characters and look over a character everyone can relate to on so many Levels. Also I think the portrayal of Ron in the movies was poorly done. The movies gave alot of Rons lines to Hermione (like in PoA where in the books, he stands up even though his leg is injured and faces Sirius saying to (what he believes to be a dangerous mass murderer) that he has to kill him first if he wants to get Harry. And it still pisses me off that in the movies they gave that line to Hermione. Also in PoA when they have the lesson with Snape, in the book he defends Hermione and in the movie he just agrees with Snape. Ron would never never agree with Snape bullying Hermione.
I just wish we got a correct portrayal of my favourite character in the movies, because book Ron is just so much more that the comedic side kicks who just seems to sit around and wait for Harry and Hermione to do stuff.
Sorry for my rant you guys!

I couldn't have said it better.
I'm still angry of the way the movies portrayed him when Hermione was captured and tortured by Bellatrix. In the books, he cries, screams and is desperate to leave his cell and save Hermione. In the movie he just looks around angry.
Ron is the heart and soul of the trio. He is the glue that keeps the brains and the (sometimes rather idotic ;) ) hero together.

Oh my god yes that scene made me cry so hard in the books because you could really see in how much pain Ron was.
I feel like the movies wanted to make Hermione so much better than in the books and for that to work they had to reduce Ron to the comedic side kick.

Thank god we can reread the books and cherish all of the great characters J.K. Rowling created :)

My favourite has to be Half Blood Prince. I do not really know why, since alot of bad things happen but I love how it mixes everything together (the time at Hogwarts, Voldemorts backstory, the romantic relationships, Quidditch, the mystery of the Half-Blood Prince, etc.) I just always love to reread this one because it is also the last one were they are still at Hogwarts, but throughout the book we know that they will not return next time.
Which one is yours?

Actually, I love that book! It's one of my favorites for the exact opposite. I remember reading the first book and wondering.. "Why is Harry so normal? Why is there no conversations about the fact that he murdered a teacher? I would have freaked out!" and consequently, until the Order, thinking the books slightly cartoonish because nothing really had consequences. Finally in the fifth book, Harry had an actual emotional and psychological break though (which should have happened from the first book, in my opinion). He's not an angsty teenager at all, he has PTSD, shell shock. He just went through an extremely traumatic event and it's very naturally damaged him. Reading Harry's anger was very liberating, because I felt like he was finally NORMAL and series became more adult to me.

Half-Blood Prince is also my favorite! While Sirius is my fav character, there is something about their last year of normalcy before the war truly hits. And as someone who loves both drarry and hinny, this book gives me everything that I need.

I saw someone a while back talk about how Ron and Sokka (atla) are two characters with the same base (funny guys, not so strong as their peers, but highly strategic ) but are treated completely differently by their respective fandoms and I think is about how the movies portrayed him. Most of his qualities and great scenes were transferred to another character while they made Hermione look perfect.
My honest opinion is that they screw with every member of the Weasley Family. Like what they did to Ginny? It is an offense to the books
