Cassie Doran | 25 comments I loved Ron. he is smarter than you think. I think he's a great support system. I mean, he got them through the chess board. he was even made prefect. what do you think?

felicia (ffeelicias) I love Ron, he's one of my favourite characters in Harry Potter! :)

Kirstin | 52 comments I'm rereading the series since when I was younger. I definitely see Ron in a new light and he's so awesome! He's very protective of his friends and very brave as well. In the second book he had to over come two of his biggest fears at the same time! Spiders and the Forbidden Forrest. He is not without flaws but no character should be.

message 5: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 8 comments I think the things that make people dislike Ron (the jealousy and leaving them in Deathly Hallows) just prove that he was a normal human being. He wasn't the Chosen One and he wasn't a genius like Hermione. He was the one any of us could've been. When Dumbledore leaves him the Deluminator Ron says it's because Dumbledore knew he'd leave, but Harry tells him it's because he knew Ron would always want to come back. Ron had weaknesses just like the rest of us, but he always showed his true self in the end. Sorry if this is long but I (unashamedly) love Ron and always will.

I absolutely love Ron, I think one of the reasons people don't is that they see the movies before reading the books and he's portrayed as an comic ginger sidekick for the majority of them.

message 7: by Marion (new)

Marion (readingcasually) I just wanted to add to this thread by saying that Ron is by far one of my favorite characters of all time. It really makes me mad when I see people hate him, although on some level I guess I can understand - but then again, when it comes to his jealousy or possessivness, aren't those traits that any of those people could find in some of their favorite characters? I just think there's a lot of unfair hate towards him. He's smart by experience, he's helpful (I mean, he's the one who guides Harry through pretty much all the wizard stuff at the beginning, and he's constantly by his side), he's incredibly loyal (I hate that they had Hagrid say the stuff about Muggleborns to Hermione in the movies - it was one of Ron's lines in the book, and it showed just how much he was ready to defend her beyond actions, but also in words; and I mean, do I need to exemplify his loyalty to Harry?), and just... Gosh I love him so much. I still don't get how after all these years, people still don't understand that his jealousy stems from being the youngest boy of the family, who feels like he can't shine because his brothers have already done all the things! And it doesn't mean that he doesn't love Harry, because of course he does, it just means that he's scared to be in Harry's shadow, to just be a sidekick (which the movies have reduced him to, yikes).
Wow, this got long! Sorry, I actually came here because I saw a bit of hate about him and needed to join my fellow Ron fans!

message 8: by Taylor (new)

Taylor I think the biggest problem with Ron's character is of course the differences between book vs. movie. The movies (at least in my opinion) made him seem like a more shallow character and not as important to the trio as he was in the books. In the books he was much more courageous and vital to Harry's role as the hero. In the movies he was sometimes reduced to a comedic effect and then the somewhat reluctant love interest of Hermione as it seemed. I still enjoyed both Ron characters but I do think they are different in significant ways just because of the medium of portrayal. But the series wouldn't be the same without him.

Desiree Taggard | 5 comments So much about the movies shows the trio in a different light. I hate that the movies hint that there could have been something between Hermione and Harry or that they should have ended up together but if you read the books you know that she ended up with the better man. I agree with what was said earlier that Ron is the everyday man of the group. Kind of like hawkeye in the second avengers movie when he says that everyone else has some power or gift and he is just a guy with a bow and arrow trying to save the world. I see Ron in this light. He is a loyal and brave guy who is overlooked in his family, school and every other way but in the end he gets it done and supports everyone else too. I hate that people give him such a hard time. As to the jealousy and throwing fits..... what teenager who is best friends with the most famous wizard of his time and the smartest witch of this age would not have moments of pure angst and issues. Just a guy with a wand, a deluminator and a heart of a lion, that is Ron.

message 10: by Elisa (new)

Elisa I think what made me like Ron ist, that he hasn't a special ability, he isn't the smartest kid in class and he isn't the chosen one or anything. And that makes him much more relatable. I think (in addition tho what was already mentioned) that can be one of the reasons why he is disliked. Ron is the character that most of us would be (in the best case scenario, because he is really loyal and an awesome friend), whereas Harry or Hermione is the person most of us would want to be. So some people really like him because of that reliability and others don't. I also thought he was a much stronger character in the books in comparison to the movies, but i could enjoy both versions. What i liked more in the books, is that he had a much bigger impact in holding the group together. But the Ron in the movies was much fun and he showed a lot of courage. So, yes definitely one of my favorite Characters.

message 11: by Lina (new)

Lina | 79 comments He was a loyal best friend, cocky, funny, i loved his character, his relationship with Harry is funny and interesting, especallly when they rode the car to Hogworts in the first book, his relationship with Hemione was interesting too, but you know what happened in the end of book seven. Anyway he was a loyal best friend a very good sidekick to Harry.

message 12: by Maya (new)

Maya | 30 comments I love Ron. He is so funny and smarter than people think. I actually like this character more than Harry.(Shhhhhhhh) He is so great, even if he does get jealous sometimes. He is only human. He is so relatable to people. Harry is this weird supernatural powerful orphaned wizard. Ron is mediocre, and I love it. I also love the Ron+Hermione thing, I don't want to spoil anything though...

message 13: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (victoriammd) | 45 comments I really love the book Ron too, he's clever and cares deeply for his friends and family. It's kind of a shame that we couldn't see more aspects of his personality in the movies.

Mark Kloss (markkloss) | 25 comments Believe it or not I haven't watched the movies and don't want to, but I have read and re-read the series many times! I totally agree that Ron is an awesome character. Harry wouldn't be Harry without him. he is brave, loyal, funny, lighthearted and totally relatable!

message 15: by Kaseadillla (new)

Kaseadillla | 9 comments I was always a little disappointed with how the movies portrayed Ron in the last 3-4 installments. It's like his character completely disappeared, he barely had any lines, and his friendship with Harry just seemed to be there without any airtime. At times it felt like the Harry and Hermione show and Ron was a tagalong. I think in the books it feels more like a real trio.

Jessamine GG (jessamine86) | 3 comments Ron will always be my fave character! He was brave even when he was scared. He always tried his best. He was just adorable!

message 17: by Caro (new)

Caro (onelittlebookbird) | 5 comments Ron is and will always be my absolute favorite character in Harry Potter.
I think the reasons why a lot of People have issues with Ron or do not like him, is because he is like it was said before just a normal human being. And it seems that People want extraordinary characters and look over a character everyone can relate to on so many Levels. Also I think the portrayal of Ron in the movies was poorly done. The movies gave alot of Rons lines to Hermione (like in PoA where in the books, he stands up even though his leg is injured and faces Sirius saying to (what he believes to be a dangerous mass murderer) that he has to kill him first if he wants to get Harry. And it still pisses me off that in the movies they gave that line to Hermione. Also in PoA when they have the lesson with Snape, in the book he defends Hermione and in the movie he just agrees with Snape. Ron would never never agree with Snape bullying Hermione.
I just wish we got a correct portrayal of my favourite character in the movies, because book Ron is just so much more that the comedic side kicks who just seems to sit around and wait for Harry and Hermione to do stuff.
Sorry for my rant you guys!

I couldn't have said it better.
I'm still angry of the way the movies portrayed him when Hermione was captured and tortured by Bellatrix. In the books, he cries, screams and is desperate to leave his cell and save Hermione. In the movie he just looks around angry.

Ron is the heart and soul of the trio. He is the glue that keeps the brains and the (sometimes rather idotic ;) ) hero together.

Oh my god yes that scene made me cry so hard in the books because you could really see in how much pain Ron was.
I feel like the movies wanted to make Hermione so much better than in the books and for that to work they had to reduce Ron to the comedic side kick.

message 20: by BoMo (last edited Nov 09, 2017 01:50AM) (new)

BoMo You're right. In the movies, Ron often looked like an jealous idiot, reduced to funny comments. In the books, Ron was witty and also really clever - he was able to win the chess game! He may not be the brightest wizard of his generation (Harry is neither!) , but he was a great friend (sometimes with the emotional range of a teaspoon) and deserved better!

Thank god we can reread the books and cherish all of the great characters J.K. Rowling created :)

My favourite has to be Half Blood Prince. I do not really know why, since alot of bad things happen but I love how it mixes everything together (the time at Hogwarts, Voldemorts backstory, the romantic relationships, Quidditch, the mystery of the Half-Blood Prince, etc.) I just always love to reread this one because it is also the last one were they are still at Hogwarts, but throughout the book we know that they will not return next time.

Which one is yours?

message 24: by BoMo (new)

BoMo I know that many people disagree, but my favorite book is Order of the Phoenix. I know that Harry is a rather angsty and angry teenager in this one and sometimes he is really annoying, but I just love the overall atmosphere, Grimmauld Place, Christmas on the Closed Ward, the DA and the (subtle) hints of romance (between Ron and Hermione). I also really adore Prisoner of Azkaban.

Actually, I love that book! It's one of my favorites for the exact opposite. I remember reading the first book and wondering.. "Why is Harry so normal? Why is there no conversations about the fact that he murdered a teacher? I would have freaked out!" and consequently, until the Order, thinking the books slightly cartoonish because nothing really had consequences. Finally in the fifth book, Harry had an actual emotional and psychological break though (which should have happened from the first book, in my opinion). He's not an angsty teenager at all, he has PTSD, shell shock. He just went through an extremely traumatic event and it's very naturally damaged him. Reading Harry's anger was very liberating, because I felt like he was finally NORMAL and series became more adult to me.

Dalia | 183 comments Ron is so underrated. People say, without Hermione, they wouldn’t have been able to do anything! That’s true. But without Ron, they wouldn’t have been able to do anything either.

Zoe Ron was so much better in the books than the movies. I find it funny how different people see him when they watch the movies versus the books.

Latte ~ Hiatus **INACTIVE** | 138 comments Has anyone noticed that in every book, something bad happens to Ron? Like in the first book, the chess game; the second book, the spiders and the slugs (shudders internally); the third book, Sirius hurts his leg AND he finds out his pet rat is Peter Pettigrew; etc. As you can see, many terrible things. And for what reason? We'll never know. Honestly, Ron is the most emotionally scarred character, after Harry of course.

Half-Blood Prince is also my favorite! While Sirius is my fav character, there is something about their last year of normalcy before the war truly hits. And as someone who loves both drarry and hinny, this book gives me everything that I need.

message 32: by Diana (new)

Diana (diammend) | 3 comments Now about Ron, he is one of my favs.
I saw someone a while back talk about how Ron and Sokka (atla) are two characters with the same base (funny guys, not so strong as their peers, but highly strategic ) but are treated completely differently by their respective fandoms and I think is about how the movies portrayed him. Most of his qualities and great scenes were transferred to another character while they made Hermione look perfect.
My honest opinion is that they screw with every member of the Weasley Family. Like what they did to Ginny? It is an offense to the books
