Hardboiled America by Geoffrey O'Brien... an intrinsically entertaining read. Such a great book I had to read it twice.

Also Robert Porfirio's book on Jim Thompson is amazing.

Yeah, I meant Polito. Also check out the bio Goodis: A Life in Black and White by Philipe Garnier, an insanely entertaining read.
