HobbitFromPA | 26 comments So I'm just wondering to those of you who read comics as I do, do you count your comic reading towards you reading challenge? I am of the thinking that any reading is good reading, but for some reason I feel like I'm cheating if I add the comics that I'm reading to the challenge. If I had added all of the comics I read last year to my challenge I easily would have exceeded 200 instead of just 73. I'm sure I am totally over thinking things, but just curious what others do.

Cheers

I don't count individual issues, but if I read them in the collected trade form I do. As you say, any reading is good reading. People count short children's books all the time, so I think it is fair to say that comic books should count, too.

Alisha I add everything I read because I just want to actually remember what I read! So often I think...did I read this? Or...what was the name of that book about pirates? If you don't want to add things to the reading challenge, you can just change or not set the date that you read it. For me, my personal goals are more about types of books read as opposed to the number of books. Go with what feels right to you.

Wayne McCoy (geekwayne) | 45 comments I didn't used to count shorter works, but since GoodReads does and it's in my goal count, I do. And my book count includes children's books since I read a handful for review throughout the year.

Ariel Stirling | 80 comments I count them. Mostly manga and only about 20 or 30 a year, so they bring my count up, but my average pages down. I think it depends on what you are trying to track and what purpose that tracking serves.

Luke | 14 comments I don't.. I mean they will show up in my Reading Challenge according to Goodreads.. But to me, they don't count. I just take that into account when I'm looking at my goal.

Rick As a non-comics reader I've always wondered about this when I see people say that they read 176 books (or some very high figure). To me, the solution is obvious - track them separately - "I read 72 regular books, 114 comics and listened to 12 audio books" or some such. Of course, GR doesn't support that I think, so while it might be an obvious solution it's not necessarily easy to do here.

I count trades towards my reading goals, but when I run statistics at the end of the year, I count them separate. But I only do 10-15 a year and exceed my goal than more than that, so it's kind of moot.

The real answer is whatever works for you. Reading goals should be fun/personal IMHO.

I saw a comment before - if the book has multiple editions on goodreads - you can just mark the other edition as read and it will count towards your total.

Fredrik (fredurix) | 228 comments Regarding comics, I'm less rigorous about tracking them on Goodreads, but in principle I do count collections or complete graphic novels towards my reading goal.

xGvJx | 22 comments I have had a goal of 100 books every year since 2014, which seems to be the perfect number when I include comics and everything that belongs on Goodreads. Both years I've had to become creative around Christmas, when there is just a week left, and around 10 books to go ... Comics come in really handy then, along with children's books and other short stuff - but I try to find things that I actually think I'll enjoy, except for the one time I found an ISBN number in a very short tourist guide about my city at the in-laws ... This sprint to the finish line has become one of my favorite things about doing a challenge, so I've signed up for 100 this year too. This being January, I'm of course a few books ahead, but that will change in a few months, I'm sure of it. It's fun to look back on how my reading habits change throughout the year.

I don't count comics unless they are truly massive. Like hundreds or thousands of pages, because they're too easy to read. Same goes for art and photo books.

I only count "real" books that have few if any pictures.
