NBRC Travel Agent | 368 comments Your itinerary is here

When you have a team name, just let me know and I'll update this thread name :)

First stop - Porto Seguro, Brazil

NBRC Travel Agent | 368 comments So just to get you started...

Your first stop is Porto Seguro, Brazil

You can choose as a team to:
TASK
- Read books set in Brazil, or by Brazilian authors or
- Do a spell-it-out of Porto Seguro or Brazil

OR
You can elect to do the detour, which for this stop, means that four of you need to "Read a book with a country scene on the cover"

Alex | 1018 comments Hi team! Any ideas for team names?

As I understand it we should aim to do 5 detours, so I thought I'd put them all at the top of the thread here:

Read a book with a country scene on the cover
Read a book whose author died 5+ years ago
Read a book with the name of the tarot card "The Star" in the text or title
Read a book where the first word of the title is The
Read a book where the title starts with the letter O
Read a book where a character is a cowboy/cowgirl
Read a book with an alternate history
Read a book where a girl dresses up as a boy

Any thoughts? I'd struggle with cowboy/girl and alternate history the most.

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) Hi! I'm really bad at names, and I think this weeks detour seems pretty reasonable :-)

Holli | 397 comments Hi all! The only name that springs to mind for me is The Bookworms. Lousy, but I'm low on my caffeine at the moment. :-)

I like the names Holly especially "Have Book, Will Travel" :)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) Love that! Have Book Will Travel!

Hi everybody! I will be back on later but I'm fine with any name you all decide :)

Victoria | 1132 comments Hey everyone! I'm really bad at coming up with names, but I love the "Have Book, Will Travel" suggestion.

I have no idea what to read for Brazil, but I am excited to get started!

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

I've got an awful headache tonight so I'm sorry for being short earlier. Really like "Have Book, Will Travel" too.

Locations: USA, Australia & Russia are fairly easy for me. I can look for the others but some are going to need a detour or spell-out

Spell-outs: Any letter is doable. I can contribute more than 1 book a week if needed.

Detours: Any are doable. The last two are drawing a blank though but I'm sure there is something on my TBR somewhere that will fit them :)

Did I miss giving any other useful information? Ugh, my brain turned off like an hour ago :(

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) For this I'd rather do spell out or detour, I really don't have any books that take place in Brazil or that are written by a Brazilian author, I can't even think of a Brazilian author offhand.
And I think most of us are in agreement with the name :-)

Headaches are not fun. I get migraines occasionally, so I quite understand. Hope you feel better soon.

I'm usually pretty good with spell-outs and I have a book with a Z author if we want to go that way. Now, if my library cooperates and someone doesn't grab the audio out from under me is the other part of that equation.

message 18: by [deleted user] (last edited Jan 28, 2016 08:36PM) (new)

Thanks, Holli :) They are terrible aren't they? Mine is just a stress one tonight but sometimes they can be just as bad.

One thing I'm unsure about...to get the maximum points, it says all members must read a book during that week. What it doesn't say is that all members must read a "task" book. So I'm wondering if 7 of us read the task book as required for the extra 15 points & then the 8th just reads any book, do we get the other extra 10 points?

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) That is a very good question, hmmmm

message 20: by [deleted user] (last edited Jan 29, 2016 10:45AM) (new)

Nevermind, I saw where another team mentioned it just had to be any book. Whew!

So are we going for the spell-out or detour?

B - Victoria
R - Carmen
A - Miranda?
Z - Holli ?
I -
L - Zee?

6 members take a letter & 2 read any book for the maximum points. Yes? No? I guess we just want to make sure that we use all 5 of our detours and we would need to pick the 5 best ones to know which location to use them on.

☼♎ Carmen the Bootyshaker Temptress ☼♎ | 7238 comments I'm off to bed but I'm good with anything. Off hand I can only think of one book that has a Brazil setting but if we go with Spell it out I'm good too.

Goodnight all! :-)

message 25: by Holli (new)

Holli | 397 comments From what the FAQ says, we can start right away. At least how I'm reading it, so I'm going to go grab the audio while it's still available at my online library.

*runs to get library card*

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) I'm good with whatever I really don't want Z, I am reading a book next week that starts with a B,
Also I am a bit confused on the detour, we get to pick what detour we go on, or is it the detour given in the example above???

message 27: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm on the app so excuse the txt type. The spreadsheet shows which detour goes with what location so we have no choice on that part.

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) Thanks El, I just re-read the rules and looked at the spreadsheet, so I figured it out :-) good night girls! I think I'm the only one on the West Coast so it's not quite bedtime yet :-)

Holli | 397 comments Elle wrote: "I'm on the app so excuse the txt type. The spreadsheet shows which detour goes with what location so we have no choice on that part."

And auto-correct. Don't forget that loveliness. :-)

I was able to get the audio for Mitchell Zuckoff's Lost in Shangri-la A True Story of Survival, Adventure, and the Most Incredible Rescue Mission of World War II by Mitchell Zuckoff , so I can cover the Z. I will start it as soon as I'm more coherent. My cat makes a terrible alarm clock. I only recognize one 4 o'clock a day when I have to go somewhere the next day and hers rarely matches with mine.

message 30: by Alex (new)

Alex | 1018 comments Whew, lots of chat to catch up on from when I was sleeping! I'm happy with Have Book, Will Travel as a team name.

Are we decided on spell-it-out? I can cover either A or L or I'm good for countryside scene for the detour too.

I've been struggling with my reading this month so I'm really hoping this challenge will help me with that. I do like that there's no strict deadlines.

Yes, so for maximum points for a task you need to have 6 people contribute to the task. So for BRAZIL, you have 6 letters so you need a different person to read for each letter. You then need everyone to at least read one book for the time you are at the stop (for max. points) so the other 2 people can read anything. You have to be at a stop for a MINIMUM of one week, but can stay as long as you like without penalty.
And books read from the time your challenge started count for the whole challenge. So a faster reader may read a book to count towards BRAZIL and also another book for a later task/detour while you are at this stop and that extra book can count for the later task/detour once you hit that stop

message 32: by Victoria (new)

Victoria | 1132 comments I don't think I have any Brazil books so the spell-it-out works for me. I was planning on reading A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson next, which wood work for B. But I think someone else had a B book so I'll see if I can find something else for another letter.

(Ugh, doing this on my phone is the worst)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) Good morning! I said I could do B, but I can also do another letter A maybe? Really anything but that Z ;-)
I'm always on my phone, so I'm just used to it, it is what it is!
Have we all checked in???

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

Unless I'm missing something, Sarah & Miranda haven't checked in yet. Does anybody want to pm them or should we just wait until tomorrow?

Since I keep having to refer to the Read Me First :
Location & Spell-outs: 10 + 15 (6 members) + 10 (all) = 35 max points
Detours: 25 + 15 (7 members) + 10 (all) = 50 max points

There's a difference of 15 points between taking the detour versus doing the spell-out but 7 members would have to read a book with a country scene on the cover to fully utilize the detour. Of course, since we only get 5 detours, we probably should use them all since they are worth more. But again, I'm good with whatever the team wants so any strategy talk is just me looking at different options available. Also, I believe we can stay longer than a week if we need to do that to complete our decided task.

Anybody good at spreadsheets to see if we need to customize or tweak anything? I'm terrible, my computer has some affliction against google sheets. I'm also not clear on what we do with our read books, do we post here or just in the spreadsheet?

Okay, wow...this post turned out way longer than intended :( Sorry!

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) You are just asking all the same questions the rest of us have :-)

Oh, sorry! I'm pretty big on reading everything so not sure how I managed to repeat those 2 questions. Ah, it seems today is going to be one of those kind of days...lol ;)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) We haven't asked them yet, we are just thinking of them, so thank you for asking :-)

Miranda (miranda82) | 351 comments I'm good with any name... im getting ready to start a new book but I'm stuck between 3 .. the maze runner by James dashner, obsidian by jennifer Armentrout, or gone girl by Gilliam flynn..

☼♎ Carmen the Bootyshaker Temptress ☼♎ | 7238 comments Hi everybody. I'm still trying to figure this out but I like all the questions. It's what I was thinking too. I'm good with any way the team wants to go with. I'm open for anything. :)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) Are we supposed to PM them our team name???
@ Maranda those 2 last books were both some of my favorites :-) enjoy!

message 42: by Holli (new)

Holli | 397 comments Afternoon all! On the detours, I just got a book last night that will cover the cowboy one, unless some one else has claimed it.

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) Holly, I don't believe that is a current detour, and when we get to that detour, I think we all can read for this detour or at least seven of us need to, to get maximum point :-) I think ;-)

message 44: by [deleted user] (last edited Jan 29, 2016 10:52AM) (new)

Here's what we have so far for the spell-out option:

B - Victoria
R - Carmen
A - Miranda?
Z - Holli ?
I -
L - Zee?

I hope that's right and it doesn't look like anyone's claimed I. Two members can read whatever book they want. I finished one today so it would count and could be used for B if we end up needing it. But I will have more reads this weekend so I can either do the I or just pick-up a book that grabs my attention ;)

Now if 7 of us can read a book with a country scene on the cover, then I would suggest we consider the detour this stop. What do you all think? Haha...can you tell I'm itching to get my next book planned :P

message 45: by Miranda (new)

Miranda (miranda82) | 351 comments I'm good with A .. I've already stated it

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) Good either way :-)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) I think we need to decide we want maximum points, or not, then if we do want to get the maximum points we need to decide what five detours we want to do, does that make sense???
I'm cool either way, I can be competitive, I can be not competitive, I can be whatever ;-)

message 48: by [deleted user] (new)

I went and added a sheet (called Luggage) to our spreadsheet so we could record our read books. We can use them at anytime during the challenge if needed. Feel free to make changes or create something totally different :)

I'm assuming we are going with the spell-out since most people can do that.

Berit, did you want to grab the I or did you want me to find something? Either works for me.

I agree & am the same way :)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) You can have it, if you want I don't have anything offhand with a I that I can think of, but I could possibly StumbleUpon something, but if you can't do it I can :-)
