Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1685 comments Paula, I had considered "The Art of War" for bingo, but you read it.

This book was under consideration for either classic nonfiction or pre-1600. I ended up reading two other books for these categories instead, but I did think of reading it!

It was a difficult read for me. I read a version with lots of sidenotes, footnotes, and explanations from a translator that tried to incorporate many different views from many different prior translators. Luckily, it was fairly short. :)

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1685 comments I'll keep in mind to try to find an edition with lots of notes to help explain things as you have.

This book is so popular, I didn't realize the difficulty of it for reading!

Sorry for your injury but it looks like you used your time well...by reading!

A tough way to get more reading time, but glad that you are upbeat about it.

Paula W Thanks! I am aiming for a total blackout, so I wasn't really paying attention. But now I am excited!

Nice job on the reads!

message 13: by Paula W (new)

Paula W Thanks! I think I will be able to fill a few more slots with the upcoming group reads if I can get through them. I plan to read The Idiot and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, both of which will fit into the "Classic of Europe" and "Published in the 1800s" squares.

Paula W I have two left to go. I am currently reading Watership Down and can put that one into the foreign literary prize square (Carnegie Medal 1972). And then the dreaded 1700s square....

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1685 comments Paula, it just so happens that I'm reading "Evelina" by Fanny Burney with Women's Lit group as May BOTM.

It was written in 1700s, so I'm using it for bingo.

I'm at 40% and it's quite good!

It's avail at project Gutenberg.

I can't wait to see what you'll choose for 1700s square.

I decided to start The Nun by Denis Diderot. It has some interesting reviews, and it is under 200 pages. It is surprisingly easy to read! I got through the first 20 pages thinking that I might quite enjoy this. The plot as I understand it so far: A teenager finds out that she is illegitimate (hated by the man she thought was her father and a constant reminder of guilt for her mother) and is forced into becoming a nun against her will. It was written as a satire, sort of a joke by the author, and caused quite the scandal in its time. I expect some awkward nun-on-nun scenes later after reading some of the reviews. I'll let you know how it turns out. Meanwhile, I'll also put Evelina on my to-read list if you recommend it!

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1685 comments If you end up liking "The Nun" perhaps I'll put it on my list for bingo 2017.

Congratulations, Paula! You've got a great list. I'd never heard of The Nun before. I looks like an engrossing read. Thanks for the introduction.

Paula W Thanks, you guys. This was my first year doing the challenge, and I loved it. I am new to the classics andthought this would be a good way to get into them. Some of the books on this list are now my favorite books of all time!

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1685 comments You have some good titles on your list.

Some I've read, some I want to consider for bingo 2017!

message 27: by [deleted user] (new)

Well done, Paula! :) For someone who was new to classics, you sure have a nice list of books in your "read" pile now. Many of the books in your list I'd like to get to this year, and a few others I've read.

Wow, Paula, congrats! I put The Nun on my TBR as well. I love finding books that I would otherwise just overlook. Might be saving that one for the 2017 challenge as well.
