Once the book is read, of course :-)

Hi, I'm Lori from team Hello Kitty.

♥ Beatrix Potter and Roald Dahl were the books for my childhood. I'm bedridden so I love that books are an escape that take me to different worlds and lives.

I read Sourcery. I definitely escape into a different world with Terry Pratchett's Discworld series.

Elinaly Completion Post

Au riismed (Vorkosigan Saga, #1) by Lois McMaster Bujold
I read the translation of Shards of Honour by Lois McMaster Bujold
Read date: 3/27/2016
Rating: 4 stars
How it fits: reserve if needed (wild draw 4); Dr Who memory; 2 words.

Here is the memory link -> Doctor Who.

PS! I really loved the book - great and unusual romance story behind the war between colonies of different planets (total science fiction) with lots of twists and surprises. I especially enjoyed the authors fantasy-creatures in the first part of the book (5 stars to the vampire-bubbles with their snake tentacles - horrible, brrrr....). Also really unique ending (the "consequences" chapter). I will definitely read other books in series!

Elinaly Searching for words is so much fun and the delight when you find something you weren't expecting at all...
Look at those words for this challenge - we all have to read cooking books... LOL

Well, for my big surprise I felt delighted twice (remember it was a science fiction book set in space... war ...metal warships...).

Au riismed (Vorkosigan Saga, #1) by Lois McMaster Bujold
in the edition I read (estonian, so translated back to english):
onion - p 194: He grinned. "Onions don't have seeds, Cordelia."
grape - p 223: Ha! Picking grapes, sailing your boat—your father told me about your sailboat.

message 406: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Ooook, set in space and you still found words related to food - not bad! Wouldn't have thought haha.

And that completes the last memory, so the march mini challenge is completely finished. Well done everyone!! :-)

Elinaly What would we do without our Danielle? LOL
I was so sure that no one will ever find "celery" or "dill" in books (if they weren't cooking books)...
Nicely done, Danielle! :)

I'm also currently going through the last book that remains to be read. Divide & Conquer is really good! I enjoy this one more than the previous one.

Yeah, thought that one would be hard to find, so surprised it was in this book.

I just noticed a stupid autocorrect in the sentence for it. I didn't see it before but it's supposed to be earth not Esty. How it could change earth to that, I don't know.

Love this series and you gotta love Ty and Zane!

message 416: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Yeah I was wondering about Esty but well.. sometimes there are odd things in books hehe. I'll correct that on the spreadsheet.

Yessss, those two are awesome! I only have about 30 pages to go as well and then I'm done with the book. So I'll stay up to finish it and then feel guilty about not finishing my book for Life ;-) Ah well, there's always tomorrow morning for that one! I've got about 3 hours of audio left on it, so I should be able to do that before I'm out of the house.

message 417: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Finished the book! :-)
And that officially completes all our March cards.

Way to go, Peanuts!

Only one word to be found in the book though, unless I missed something, and that was raspberry.

Jennifer (guinivere87) | 98 comments Do Karen Rose books focus more on suspense or romance?

message 422: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments I find that they have a healthy mix of both - sometimes it's more the one, sometimes more the other.

The first one I read, Die For Me, was more focused on the suspense. Another one Watch Your Back was more focused on the romance.

message 423: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Carol wrote: "Finished: Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

No, we cannot bank books. Only books finished in April will count for the April cards. And if they've been started after March 1st of course.

message 424: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments I finished:

Hexed (The Iron Druid Chronicles, #2) by Kevin Hearne
chili (p. 13)
spinach (p. 59)
orange (p.59)
onion (p. 142)
chamomile (p. 229)

Since there are a few options still for this book that haven't been used I'll see what else we can find.

Lulu (lulufritz) | 704 comments Hi Team Peanuts, Lulu from Team Cars. I read The BFG for the mini challenge. It is by Dahl and it goes with the following memory for the same author.

Beatrix Potter and Roald Dahl were the books for my childhood. I'm bedridden so I love that books are an escape that take me to different worlds and lives.

message 426: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (guinivere87) | 98 comments I'm reading A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #1) by Sarah J. Maas at the moment and it is sset in a fantasy world. Could that count for "different worlds" from the memory?

message 427: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments The memories are all done, so you don't have to worry about those anymore. It would have fit though.

Enjoy the book! I really liked it. Rhysand especially :-))

message 429: by ✿~Danielle~✿ (new)

✿~Danielle~✿ (dmh1) | 1759 comments I'll be finished listening to Carolina Dreaming (Dare Island, #5) by Virginia Kantra sometime tomorrow. Searching the paperback on Amazon shows it has two words option.

Blueberry • In that case, I'd like a dozen blueberry mini muffins • page 33

Onion • ...gelatinous brown onion gravy • page 214

message 430: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Cool!

Not all that many words left :-)

Words left to be filled:
- Chamomile/Camomile
- Cumin
- Paprika
- Spinach

Hexed (The Iron Druid Chronicles, #2) by Kevin Hearne can be used for either chamomile/camomile or for spinach. So just one of those will be needed. This way you simply have a tiny bit more options.

Honestly though, I am amazed at how quickly we've managed to find most of the words already! 3 days left to go!

Elinaly Eldarwen wrote: "Honestly though, I am amazed at how quickly we've managed to find most of the words already! 3 days left to go!"

Yeah, I am truly surprised.
In the book I´m currently reading I have found only "onion" so far (half of the book done), but I have high hopes, since its a travel book (to Ireland), and there just has to be something more about the local cuisine... fingers crossed.

PS! Captain - don´t forget the bonus points for Mini-March (completing all team memories connections) ;)

I have a book with Cumin in it. No luck with finding paprika in any other books.

message 436: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Cumin is good! That'll take care of one more word at least. :-)

Do you happen to have a digital copy of Beyond the Highland Mist (Highlander, #1) by Karen Marie Moning ? Neither Amazon, nor Google let me search inside the book and I have a paperback copy so searching isn't very effective. Just to see beforehand which word could potentially be covered still.
I have to read this one way or another for a challenge but it would be great it it had one of the remaining words - or something where we can switch out another one hehe.

message 437: by Elinaly (new)

Elinaly In April I´m planning to read
Mässaja by Veronica Roth
translation of Insurgent by Veronica Roth.

Could perfectly fit for "Hand One" -> Draw 2:
Reverse (read previously by Eldarwen) and 7 (author first name)

or of course any other card/hand you find more suitable :)

Elinaly But my first April´s read will be American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis.
Could cover "Skip" (characters name Patrick Bateman) OR "Reverse" (previously read by Pepperpots)

(I hope I like it more than Pepperpots did... :) )

message 441: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Cool, cool, we'll start slotting in the April books either tonight or tomorrow :-)

No worries, Danielle, but thanks for checking! I haven't gotten all that far in the book yet, but so far all the food/colours/etc mentions have not fitted any of the words we've been looking for.

message 442: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments APRIL

We'll not only get a hand more than for March, so we'll not only have 14 hands to read (7 cards more), but there is a little something special next month:

We have also added in an extra element for April.
As UNO number cards are coloured Blue, Green, Red and Yellow, we have added seven new cards to each team that have a colour attached. So, for example, rather than receiving card "7", you may see it says " 7 Green". This means you need to find a book that not only matches the criteria for 7, but also has a colour cover of green (the cover should be more than 50% green).

(copied from the Uno Challenge thread)

Pepperpots I'm waiting to see what my book club select for April before naming my first book for UNO.

message 446: by Elinaly (new)

Moon Called (Mercy Thompson, #1) by Patricia Briggs - is it blue enough?
# 3 blue (I have paperback with this blue cover)
Hand Ten -> Draw 2:
Blue 3 (there is supposed to be character with surname Hauptman) AND Skip (author first name P)

... what you think?

What kind of book club is it? For more serious book or are the books a little more eclectic, from all across genres?

Hmmm, I hate cover decisions haha.
I think this should be blue enough, yes.

Silje, help! What do you think? ;-)

For the rest of your suggestion, those cards will definitely work. Adam Hauptmann is one of the main characters. (Love the series ^^) If the cover should be judged to have not enough blue, then it will always work for a 6 card - character Samuel Cornick (another main character in this book)

message 450: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Also, I finished Once Burned (Night Prince, #1) by Jeaniene Frost for cranberry. Gosh, I love Vlad :-) I'm already looking forward to reading the next books in that series!

On another note - the infamous Ink and Bone (The Great Library, #1) by Rachel Caine which I've been trying to finish for the past 2, almost 3 weeks, won't be done this month, so I'll finish it up some time (SOON hopefully) in April, so that'll go into a 5 slot somewhere.
