Thank you for the lists, Alwynne! Lots to explore there. I do enjoy an academic setting for a mystery.

Katherine Farrer The Cretan Counterfeit(1954, old green Penguin) has a background heavily linked to Crete/the Minoans. And there's an Ellis Peters set on a Roman site, which has an excellent chase scene at the end, but I can't remember the title at the moment.

Casson was a professional archaeologist/Greek historian and Farrer read Classics.
