Make-up painted on dead flesh was all she saw. She couldn’t see him.
Celeste closed her eyes, blocking out the present. She closed her mind to the cloying scent of lilies and the sleek feel of polished wood against her fingertips.
Better to remember him as a child afraid of the dark and needing comforting. A blonde thin boy, shoulder blade jutting from his back like a small wing when she’d come into his room to wake him in the mornings.
She couldn’t wake him now. No one could. Not ever again. Before her he lay, a grown man surrounded by white satin. The smell of the flowers sickened her. The lilies most of all. The pink and white lilies.
