Barbara McEwen (babsbookobsession) | 215 comments Hi Robyn, welcome to the group. I am a fellow Calgarian. Great story about your son, sounds like he would fit right in here. You will have lots of new Can lit on your TBR list before you know it.

message 452: by Story (new)

Story (storyheart) Welcome Robyn. I'm a former Calgarian...in fact, just came back from visiting family there. Love the story about your growling little bookworm :)

message 453: by Christine (new)

Christine Stobbe Hi Robyn. Welcome! Lots of former Calgarians here - I grew up in Calgary, as well, though I'm now in the Edmonton area.

Welcome Robin!! A great place to increase your TBR shelf!!!

message 455: by Robyn (new)

Robyn (robyneb) | 2 comments Thanks all for the warm welcome. Calgary is such a nice city. As much as I miss the ocean I love that there is always something to do around here and so many lovely spots to sit outside and read :)

Elinor | 238 comments Hello, Robyn -- I live in Invermere, so Calgary is my nearest big city and the home of two of my three daughters. We are reading books like mad to our little grandchildren and I sometimes think we enjoy this as much or more than they do!

Erin Bowlen (erinbowlen) Hi everyone!

My name is Erin, and I am a Canadian author based in New Brunswick. I have always had a passion for reading, and love historical fiction, sci-fi/fantasy, although as a writer, I currently write under the contemporary fiction/romance genres. I really believe in supporting Canadian authors, and I'm excited to see which Canadian novels I should be reading.

Charlotte | 1 comments hello I'm Charlotte and I love Mysterys, Murder Mysterys!! I once read a book that I thought was called "An Old Fashioned Murder Mystery" But I can't find it listed any where. I'm sure It was from a Canadian writer. The author was as much a mystery as the book. As I remember the story the writer lived on an island in "Maybe" Georgian Bay for many years. Then one day just disappeared living in the house this book that she had written over many years. It was about a birthday party in an old house on an island. where in the end the killer who was killing off the party goers turns out to be...the author.
Anyone else ever read this book???

message 460: by Alice (new)

Alice Poon (alice_poon) Hello there! I am a Hong Kong Canadian living in Richmond, BC. I am an avid reader of world historical fiction and a writer of historical fiction with a focus on Chinese history. I had previously lived in Toronto and Calgary and ultimately decided to settle in Greater Vancouver. Having been born and grown up in Hong Kong, I received a fully bilingual education (Chinese and English) and also learned French for 4 years.

Good to meet you all!

Peter Kingsmill Hi folks - this seems like a fun group. The gender balance is delightful! (Don't panic - next year I reach the three-quarter century mark!)
I'm an ex-pat Montrealer (over 50 years in the west, most of which in Saskatchewan. And I have just published one novel (last spring) and working on number two. I had an overload of reading when I was young, and have had an over-load of writing since (non-fiction, unless you count advertising copy!) so I confess to being a very occasional reader for many years.

I expect not too many people here will recognize your community of Hafford, but my Dad was born and raised on a farm near Richard. We just drove through Hafford a couple of months ago!

message 466: by Peter (new)

Peter Kingsmill Hi Elinor... Thank-you for the note! Yes, Hafford has been our hometown for thirty years now; it's struggling back from a brush with extinction, and grows a tiny bit each year. We moved here for three things: an excellent school for our daughter (and now her eldest graduates this year!); Redberry Lake (now a UNESCO biosphere reserve); and at the time we owned the community newspaper that served the area. We got to know a little bit about Richard in the process, and of course know some folks who still live around there.
I read that you are a successful author - congratulations! I am just getting started (one novel in the marketplace) and like you (somewhat), writing books came from a long period of professional writing.

message 467: by Evelyn (new)

Evelyn | 5 comments I am new here too, currently living in Saskatoon after 15 years in North Battleford with bi-weekly trips to work out of our Hafford office! What a small world. I am a member of 2 book clubs here in Saskatoon and working, kids and grandkids keep me pretty busy.

message 468: by Peter (new)

Peter Kingsmill Hi Evelyn - I am pondering, "I must know this person, after 15 years making frequent trips to an office here in Hafford... school? clinic?"

Anyway, thanks for the note ! Take care of yourself in that wild and weird metropolis of Saskatoon (just kidding - we spent 15 years commuting every summer from Hafford to our riverboats in Saskatoon. When we retired from that, our days seemed so much simpler! Love Saskatoon - beautiful city!)
Peter

Barbara McEwen (babsbookobsession) | 215 comments Welcome Sask folks! I grew up in Unity if any of you know where that is. We used to drive by Hafford all the time on our drive to visit my grandparents in Big River. Car ride activities included anticipating the next town and waiting for the treeline! I also spent about a decade in Saskatoon as well going to University. I am in Calgary now but still visit now and then. Welcome to the group. We all love Can lit and are pretty diverse in our tastes I think. Something for everyone.

message 470: by Peter (new)

Peter Kingsmill Oh yeah - know where Unity is! Pretty good town, it seems! Thanks for the welcome - much appreciated!
Peter

Alicya Perreault | 6 comments Hi everyone. I'm new to Goodreads and have just written and self-published my part memoir/part self-help book Taming Crazy: Confessions and Lessons I'm originally from Wales now living in Calgary and the Okanagan (we straddle the Rockies) I was going to do a big Goodreads ebook giveaway but a bit disappointed that its not available to Canadians...ugh! Will have to look into a different option.
Anyway, I'm an avid reader and happy to be here!

message 472: by Peter (new)

Peter Kingsmill Welcome onboard Alicya! Used to live in the Okanagan (Armstrong) - nice part of the world!
Ouch - didn't know there was that limitation on Goodreads (not for Canadians... and I'm sort of surprised. I used Bookfunnel to do a give-away in June - collected 500+ email addresses... might be worth checking out (my genre is fiction - mystery, so I am not sure if Bookfunnel takes that, but check it out!
Cheers,
Peter

message 473: by Barbara (new)

Barbara McEwen (babsbookobsession) | 215 comments Goodreads used to be great for giveaways before Amazon took over. Watch me get kicked out now, ha!

message 474: by Peter (new)

Peter Kingsmill Any idea why the Canadian vs USA limitation? You'd thing that an e-book is an e-book is an e-book and it produces revenue whenever/wherever it's sold (no shipping costs).
There must be an explanation somewhere!

??

Barbara, I also travelled for work to Unity and Big River as well!

message 478: by Alicya (new)

Alicya Perreault | 6 comments Hi Peter, I drive through Armstrong all the time.
Yes ebook giveaways are for US residents only. You can do print giveaways but of course theres extra costs of shipping...always something. Thanks for the bookfunnel suggestion, I'll look into it.

It's astonishing that several people here actually know the tiny hamlet of Hafford. I grew up on a farm near Brada (which no longer exists) outside North Battleford, and my brother still farms there so we visit my childhood home often. Of course I know where Unity is, and Big River, too! The setting for my novel Bird's Eye View is loosely based on the Battlefords.

Samantha Trillium (Just Reading in the Rain)☂ (trillium25) | 7 comments Hi everybody. My name is Samantha. I've been on Goodreads for a few years now, and really wanted to join a book club that concentrated on Canadian authors. I don't know why I didn't find this group sooner!?
I have been making more of an effort to include at least 1 Canadian author in my TBR. One of my all time favourite novels by a Canadian author is Crow Lake by Mary Lawson.

message 495: by Alan (new)

Alan Welch | 7 comments Hi everybody!
My name is Alan Welch and I am a Canadian author, but don't look for Canadian content in my books. I write Westerns!
I currently reside in Quebec, in the woods, next to a beautiful lake, where I can write in peace.
My favorite genres are historical fiction (I particularly love Bernard Cornwell's books), thrillers and, of course, Westerns.
My latest book 'Gunfighter Summer' can be found on Amazon and Kindle. I had fun writing it and hope that some of you will enjoy reading it.
Happy New Year!
