Doreen Petersen Doreen from Boston, MA. I'm not Canadian :( but I did live 3 yrs in Saskatoon and feel in love with Canadian literature. Any suggestions anyone can give me, especially about Saskatchewan would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome Doreen! You can check out our books by province section which may give you a few books to add to your TBR pile.

message 53: by Doreen (new)

Doreen Petersen Thanks Susan. So glad this group was formed so I can get my fix of wonderful Canadian writers.

Louise | 1171 comments Wow, so awesome to see so many familiar names here! Welcome Allison II, Naomi, Barbara, Kelsi and CluckingBell!

message 55: by Allison (new)

Allison | 2121 comments I have to admit, I feel great "knowing" everyone here, but yet learning a thing or two more about you all! As we all entered the other group at different times, we only had one-way intros! Fun, now, to hear all your details together!

message 56: by Shannon (new)

Shannon Oh joy! Maybe there will be no CBC Books withdrawals after all :) I'm another neighbor to the south, but have really been intentional about reading less American literature. My interests was piqued by Lawrence Hill and then I really enjoyed Tracey Lindberg's debut. It's a tough road trying to discover great authors on your own so I'm happy to be here.

Natasha Penney | 563 comments And Shannon! Welcome!

message 59: by Doreen (new)

Doreen Petersen Oh Natasha you're so sweet and thoughtful. I think this is gonna be a great book group. This may be a bit forward of me but maybe at some point someone could on building up the bookshelves. Right now you really can't because the group was so graciously formed but what do you think of that idea? And I did find a book on the Saskatchewan thread that I've added to my list. Thank for the help.

message 60: by Emmkay (new)

Emmkay | 252 comments Hi all! I recognize many of you from the CBC books group. I'm originally from BC but have lived in Toronto for a number of years now. I read pretty widely, and try to balance fiction and non-fiction. I would say I've been reading more Canadian literature of late (partly thanks to the Bingo challenge! so sad to have lost my entries and will have to work on reconstituting it), but it's certainly not an exclusive interest. Thanks, Susan, for setting up this group!

Louise | 1171 comments Welcome Diane, Doreen, Shannon and Emmkay! This is so awesome!!

message 62: by Loretta (new)

Loretta | 26 comments Hi all! Another CBC Books refugee. So glad this group got started - really appreciate it!

I live in Ottawa; I moved here about 10 years ago. I grew up in Northern New Brunswick, and have also lived in Montreal, Ottawa (for university), Vancouver, and Yellowknife. I have visited every province except Saskatchewan and every Territory except Nunavut.

I read lots of stuff from all over the place. This past year I have focused a lot on indigenous authors and culture, as well as reading around issues in Islam. But I also love mysteries, and science fiction, and literary fiction. I read non-fiction occasionally.

Looking forward to new and continuing conversations here!

message 64: by Petra (new)

Petra | 707 comments I suppose I should reintroduce myself. With so many members coming over and my being a lurker in the CBC group, many of you probably don't know me.

I'm Petra. I live in British Columbia, married, no kids and no pets (at the moment). I work full-time in a local hospital as a technologist fixing and calibrating the equipment used on patients.
I like to read (naturally), run short distances (about 5K) and am learning the art of tai chi. That and keeping up the house, visiting with friends, going on hikes and keeping up with family, pretty much takes all my time.
I'm looking forward to retiring in a couple of years time.

message 70: by Magdelanye (new)

Magdelanye Thanks to you all for encouraging me to make the effort: ta da,
so I have joined you here and It feels more spacious already. I am so relieved not to have lost my budding friendships here. Thank you Susan! You are also welcome to play in my little group : in fact were down to a few faithful and wonderful members and could use an infusion. Its called Flight Paths and is more of a process group.
Unfortunately this info is being denied permission to share, but Susan found us, you can too
Living now on the sunshine coast of bc, I am a poet, massage therapist, and dancer for peace among other things. I organized and expanded the canlit section at the used bookstore where i last worked, and I have done my bit to promote and recommend canadian content, so this is a good fit for me.
Other highlights of my life: my son, now grown;learning to grow vegetables and living in a shelter I made in California for 6 mo.,
I have walked the camino de Santiago and from the dead sea to Jerusalem. I hosted a radio show called World Music: All Over the Map and facilitated womens group in prison for about 15 +yrs
I have riden an elephant for a week.
and
I have have another half hour on this machine if I want, but the sun is shining and the outdoor jazz free music reading on the grass is calling me. I feel a bit dazed about recent events but, here I am, at the moment at the Vancouver Public library where I kept my eyes down (you'll understand im sure, what temptation) and landed myself a machine that will let me flit and reference and compare books...all future activities I highly look forward to

I'm originally from a small town in Quebec; but now live in Seattle. Living away from Canada I don't always hear about the good books by Canadian authors- but boy can I relate to those Canadian settings.

Thank you so much to Susan for setting up this group.

Petra | 707 comments Lara, thanks! I'm in town every day (work there) and will try to pop over there to have a look.
I did find one (over a year ago) around VGH. I used to work there, went for a lunchtime walk and found a cute LFL. I was thrilled! I'd have to go searching the area for it again to find the exact address/street but I know just about where to find it.

Glad to hear so many positive comments about LFLs here!!!

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ LFLs?

Hi

I am Canadian born but have lived in New Zealand since I was seven. I retired early & keep busy as a volunteer.

I have been back twice - last time in 1979/80.

I'm a massive Margaret Atwood fan, but know very little about other Canadian authors.

@Carol ♔ Type, Oh Queen! ♔ -welcome, you are our first NZ participant! The individuals in this group will keep you well informed about CanLit - as I have gotten to know many in another group, I have found so many books to add to my TBR pile.

LFL = Little Free Library and they are going up all over the world. It is an initiative to share books in little boxes in the community. Here is a link to the initiative for more info: https://littlefreelibrary.org

That looks interesting.

My main source of books is the op (charity shop) where I volunteer. I love mid 20th century fiction so I get plenty which are in too poor condition to sell. :)

Laurie (sweetramona) | 10 comments Hi all - I'm Laurie, and I recognize many of you from the CBC Books group. I've been away, and was very upset to find it gone today, so I am delighted to find some of you over here.

I was born in Montreal, and raised in Toronto and Vancouver. Now I live in southwest Washington state. It is a challenge to get the CanCon news I want in the US but I try my best to keep up!

message 84: by Gillian (new)

Gillian | 229 comments Another CBC Books orphan checking in!

My name is Shvaugn and I'm from the Shuswap, BC, and am currently living in Ottawa for my last year of university. I'm really glad to find this group because I had no idea where to go after CBC Books shut down, especially since I missed the announcement. I'm super excited to be able to continue along with my bingo challenge plans with other people now!

I used to not read a lot of Canadian literature but have been slowly attempting to change that. I found a lot of good book through the CBC Books group and am looking forward to finding even more here. Although I've been branching out more and more into literature, I have a rather soft spot for science fiction and fantasy. I'm hoping to be able to contribute to a more robust discussion about Canadian science fiction and fantasy here.

message 87: by Mary Anne (new)

Mary Anne | 313 comments My name is Mary Anne and when I heard that the CBC book site had closed I felt as though my favourite meeting place for coffee and book discussions had vaporized but then relief filled me as I realized my friends had simply moved to another place. Nice to see so many familiar names.
I am formerly from Ottawa, where I was a Registered Massage Therapist and editor of a monthly community newspaper. Along the way I got a Masters in English Literature because reading is central to my being.: I read just about every genre, fiction and non-fiction.
I moved in 2012 to St Louis MO when my oldest daughter begged me to so I could take care of her daughter, then 1 year old. In a few months we will be moving to Montana close to Glacier Park.
Needless to say, I miss Canada and all things Canadian.

Paul Sveen | 5 comments Hello "EH!" I'm Paul Sveen, from Edmonton. I'm a touring stand up Comedian and writer. The laws of stand up: an audience mirrors the emotion and energy of a performer; these laws are the principles I've used to create a novel about angels and demons. In my 1st book, "The Angel's Claw." a small army of ex sociopath/ reclaimed angels, battle to give a broken homeless man the time to heal. A legion of demons hunt this man. They know him as the angel maker and the only person that can save humanity. Here's the link to my novel. I appreciate any and all comments. Thank you for reading my post!!!
