Gail Amendt | 136 comments Hi everyone! I have been lurking for a while, and thought I should introduce myself, given that I am working on BINGO and the Cross Canada challenge - with different books for each. My name is Gail, from Breton, Alberta. I am a farmer, early childhood educator, mother of three grown children, recent empty nester, avid gardener, and definitely a book nerd. I read mostly historical fiction, with some non-fiction and contemporary fiction thrown in. I read a lot of Canadian literature, but also enjoy authors from all over the world. I am a bit of a purist in that I like to have a paper book in my hands, and rarely read e-books or listen to audio books. I probably will not participate in many of the group reads as I am kept busy with the challenges I participate in, and my local, in person, book club. I do look forward to joining in the discussion here.

Welcome Gail! My kids call me a book nerd too! Great to see you are joining our challenges - they do help us discover some great books that we might not always pick up.

Rook Winters (rookwinters) | 4 comments Greetings, all. I'm Rook Winters, a Canadian author and reader. Originally from Nova Scotia, I've lived half my life in New Brunswick (after stints in Winnipeg and Toronto). I joined this group a couple weeks ago and figured it's high time to introduce myself. I read in many genres and love it when people are so excited about a book that they can't stop themselves from telling you about it. Some of my favourite Canadian authors are Robert J. Sawyer, Terry Fallis, Douglas Coupland, and Terry O'Reilly.

If you're reading this before Feb 13, 2018, I posted about a signed book giveaway open to Canadians in the Promote Your Blog/Book thread: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/....

William Blackwell | 4 comments Hello everyone, I'm William Blackwell, a Canadian author. I've written eighteen novels, crossing six dark fiction genres. I write mainly in the horror genre. I love reading horror and post-apocalyptic fiction, but really my tastes vary greatly and I'm open to almost any genre with the exception of YA. I look forward to interacting with members and I love supporting Canadian talent.

Hello fellow writers. My name is Richard Law. I currently live in Burlington ON. I am in the process of having my first novel published by Tellwell. It is called, Flowers of the Forest and is a story about my great uncle, Farquhar McLennan who gave his life in the Great War. I describe the story as historical fiction. There is a great deal of research in the content to keep it accurate and factual. When it is published, I hope you find time to read it. This year is the centenary of the Armistice.

G. Barton-Sinkia Hi! My name is G. Barton-Sinkia. I am a writer that is about to publish my first novel, By The Next Pause, this summer (06/20/18). I'm also new to Goodreads and I'm slowly navigating this wonderful site. I hope to bring a different viewpoint to the Canadian literary scene and hope to also learn about new and wonderful books published by Canadian writers. Below is a short blurb about my novel! Can't wait to connect with many of you in the near future!

I believe it's in Toronto, at the CBC studios, every year. But other cities have some Canada Reads events. Quebec City is having this one on Thursday. I wish I could go:

Shelagh Meagher (shelaghmeagher) | 11 comments Hi, I'm a reader and a writer, looking for great reading suggestions. I live in Nova Scotia beside the ocean, kayak when it's not blowing a Nor'easter, ride horses, fumble around with pottery making, sing and play the fiddle, and love hosting games night. Yes, I saw the movie...ours are much more tame! I read all kinds of stuff but really like the more literary side of fiction. Favourites include All the Light We Cannot See and the amazing Estonian thriller Purge.

Sonia (sonid) | 15 comments Hi everyone. I’m Sonia from the BC coast. I thought I’d better introduce myself as I have been commenting on some of the Canada reads threads. I’m so happy to have found this group as I having been watching the Canada reads debates for the past few years. I work at my local library as the cataloguer and am also responsible for the adult fiction collection.
I like comtempary, literary, historical and dystopian fiction as well as non fiction on anything that looks interesting and I want to know more about.

message 434: by Elinor (new)

Elinor | 238 comments Hi, Sonia. It is nice to hear from another BC resident. Many years ago I spent 8 months cataloguing books in the social sciences division at the University of Calgary library, and the boredom drove me to seek a new career. I still adore libraries, though, and the people who work in them are very special.

message 435: by Barbara (last edited Mar 20, 2018 08:17AM) (new)

Barbara McEwen (babsbookobsession) | 215 comments Welcome Sonia! I read your bio and was jealous, BC coast and a librarian! Growing up I always wanted to be a librarian but friends and family convinced me there would be no jobs and no books in the future! How bleak! I went into the sciences and I have a job and get by just fine but oh how I wish I had ignored all that advice and went with my heart. Maybe someday I will be brave like Elinor and make a change, although I do hear it is hard to get a library job. In the meantime I will live vicariously through all the Goodreads librarians.

Anne ✨ Finds Joy (annefindsjoy) Hi, everyone! I'm Canadian, but living in the US currently... I often miss out on hearing/keeping up with Canadian book news, so I'm happy to have found this group.

I'm originally from Toronto, ON, (35yrs), then lived in Calgary, AB (6yrs), before moving to the US (Austin, TX) in 2002, and have been there since. I'm married with 2 teen boys (14 and 16). Every summer we come back to Canada for vacation, this year we're headed to the Atlantic coast to take in the Bay of Fundy, Grand Manan Island, and then Halifax to Lunenberg coastal drive.

I read across a lot of genres, I especially like a good fantasy (folklore, myths), biography, or historical fiction. I'm happy to see this is an active group with lots of discussion threads and reading activities, I look forward to joining in on the fun!

Stacey Socholotuk (librarianinasia) | 2 comments Hi Everyone!
I'm Stacey and I'm a Teacher-Librarian who has been overseas for the past 15 years. I'm moving back to Canada this summer and am keen to focus a bit more on the amazing Canadian writers we have for adults.
I love historical fiction, especially WWII, and I read quite broadly. I'm not one for "fluffy" reads, even when on holidays.
Can't wait to connect with some new people through a love of books and reading!

Alexandra Prochshenko (marvelle) | 2 comments Hello everyone,

I am Alex and I moved to Toronto three years ago (originally from Kazakhstan, the first language is Russian). I used to be a journalist back home, and here I study Book Publishing at York University. Pretty weird to be so limited in terms of language, to be honest, but I couldn't choose any other profession (non-related to language), book publishing is the only thing I want to do in my life!

I only read CanLit at the moment because I attend tons of local literary events in Toronto, and have an Instagram account dedicated to CanLit and book publishing in Canada only (not going to give any links without a permission, it would be a self-promotion). Just trying to help the literary community in Toronto as much as I can. Would love to hear more recommendations or help someone to find a good read, I learned quite a lot great titles already!
More into adult books (not YA), and it can be anything, honestly, except non-fiction.

Bruce E. | 12 comments Hi,
I am Bruce Dunn, a Canadian living in Calgary, I have four SF books of the uplift variety. I looked on Wikipedia and din't find my name under Canadian SF authors, so you won't find me there. I'm not sure if I have to of something special to get on the list. It seems to me it would be useful.

I must admit that when I pick up a book I usually don't know whether it's Canadian. However, the first books I read by Kay and de Lint were specifically because they are Canadian, now that I know there is a lisy on Wikipedia I will read more Canadian SF novels.

I'm a self published author of a novel set "unofficially" in Blue Mountain resort in Ontario (think smaller Whistler).
Looking forward to interacting with Canadian readers.

Geri Glenn (geriglenn) | 1 comments Hi everyone. I just stumbled across this group and thought it might be a fun one to join.

I am a Canadian indie author of contemporary romance, and a true blue book nerd. I have a passion for reading and writing most fiction genres. I live in the Brockville, Ontario area, just south of Ottawa, though with my husband just retiring from the army, it's safe to say I've lived all over the country. It's good to be home though :)

Robyn (robyneb) | 2 comments Hello. I'm a lab technologist working at a hospital in Calgary. I've been living in Calgary these past few years but was born in Nova Scotia, raised in New Brunswick and met my husband while studying at university in Newfoundland. I have a ten month old little boy who growls at me when I finish reading him a book until I pick up and start another one. Fingers crossed he'll always love books!
I've been wanting to read more Canadian authors lately and am always looking for good suggestions. I joined this group hoping to keep more up to date with what is good and new in Canadian literature! I like a lot of different genres but tend to not like books that are seriously dark and depressing.
Looking forward to checking out the discussion boards
