Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I finished reading A Gathering Light last night and I was really disappointed with the ending. The whole book was brilliant and I really cared for the main character and her friends/family, I wanted things to work out but all of a sudden it all ended in about 3 pages. It felt really rushed. I'm glad for the character that it ended the way it did but I wish the author had taken just a little bit more time over it.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever Six bloody books I read, to get to the seriously biggest let-down of my life. Okay, I've led a charmed and sheltered life but still. Years and years later and I'm still furious!

I confess I've never forgiven Stephen R. Donaldson. for that wasted time either!
Apparently there is a third trilogy as well. I shall not be seeking them out!

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments I remember struggling through the first book of the The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever, then racing through the next few. I can't remember how it ended though - but since I don't have strong feelings about it it mustn't have bothered me at the time.

One book that I was disappointed about was The Master Mariner: Book 1: Running Proud which was part one of a planned series , but the second book was never finished.

Jim | 21810 comments I think with the Thomas Covenant series, they're a bit like the Gene Wolfe's The Book of the New Sun series. From discussions on SF groups you seem to either love them or hate them.

And being American gives you a higher probability of loving them, but even Americans can hate them :-)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Wives and Daughters was a bit disappointing too but I guess it can't be helped when the author dies a couple of chapters before the end. At least enough was written that you could see how the main points were going to be tied up

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Be careful with spoilers in here, my darlings.

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments If it's a crap book spoil away, it'll save the rest of us from having to read it!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments One person's crap can be another's masterpiece.

I don't think that sounds quite as I meant...

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I can send you some of my crap to see what you think of it

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments I never read to the end of the series of the books that True Blood is based on because I found out the end and was so pissed off I stopped reading one of the books half way through and never went back to it.

For single novels, I have a memory of being so pissed off at a book I nearly vaulted my Kindle at the wall but having trouble remembering what book. I'm going to check into my archives and see if it sparks anything.. bare with me..

message 14: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments Actually I've just remembered what book it was cause the story came back to me aha.

It was All That Remains by Patricia Cornwell.

I still rated it highly cause it was still a really good book but I was so frustrated with the ending.

Slightly spoiler-y (no exact plot points but might spoil you): (view spoiler)

Ok, done as instructed. Standing here naked.

Mmm, perhaps I shouldn't be in Costa Coffee.

Costa is more cosmopolitan than Starbucks, you'll get away with it

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I'm still speechless at the thought of a bare Geoff in the middle of Costa....

I think I will give them a miss if Geoff is going to turn up naked.

I've got the Winter Ghosts on my TBR list Eastwood, was it really bad or just a bit bad ? I've always enjoyed her other books but might give Winter Ghosts a miss if that's the case. There is too little time to read without wasting it.

eastwood (do you feel lucky punk, well do ya) | 8545 comments No it wasn't bad, just thought she fluffed her lines at the end, left me scratching my head, normally she has a cunning twist maybe i was expecting too much her other books are fantastic.

Baha. Oops. I can't even blame my typing there. My brain is just a little dead and I just completely used the wrong word...

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments The entire last book of Jean Auel's.

Crap on a monumental scale.

Mike (mcoppin) | 2 comments Could be another's monumental masterpiece.

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments Murder on the Orient Express (Agatha Christie) deeply annoyed me. SPOILER ALERT!

It's one of those whodunnits where you realise that any one of a dozen people could have committed the murder and had the motive to commit the murder. So you're trying to eliminate the suspects one by one, with the nagging thought in your mind that surely they can't all have done it? The sainted Agatha wouldn't write a cop-out ending like that, would she?

Saw the reviews - didn't bother reading. I read all the rest.

Elizabeth White | 1761 comments The end of the Divergent series.

Why did Veronica Roth do it? Dramatic effect over writer integrity?

message 29: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments I'm not averse to killing off major characters, I've even done it myself, and more than once. But I do draw the line at killing off the title character just because the author can. Not naming names here.

Oh, and another thing that really annoys me is the "ten years later and they're all okay now" tacked on happy ending. Grrrr. Collins, Rowling...

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I found that really irritating in Harry Potter as well, I kind of see why she did it but I wish she hadn't or I wish she had written it differently.

Oh yes me too!!!
I have read all the books several times now and I do skip that last chapter of the last book now!! Annoying!

message 32: by Emma (new)

Emma (emzibah) | 4125 comments You know she had that last chapter written years before the last book. She had it locked away

message 33: by M.T. (new)

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments I wasn't keen in the end of Harry Potter but more because it jarred a bit than anything. I loathed The Magus although there are two endings and one is better than the other. Also was really pissed off by the ending of Captain Corelli's Mandolin - I just think that it was too obviously contrived not to be the standard h.e.a. Towards which the story was moving. The girl, especially, had to act out of character it seemed.
