Byron | 64 comments Hey everyone, I know I don't really post here all too often, but I'm looking to get some outside feedback on my second novel which I've currently uploaded as a draft to Inkshares.

I recently entered "The Darkest Places" in one of Inkshares contests, but quickly figured that this particular book wasn't really the right fit - and instead focused on pushing "Children of the Forest." Now that "Children" has reached its Quill goal, I'm happily plugging away at the manuscript in the hopes of finishing it by the end of Spring.

"The Darkest Places" is a wholly different beast, a story directly inspired by the writings of H.P. Lovecraft, Robert W. Chambers, and Stephen King. Set against the backdrop of the roaring-twenties, "The Darkest Places" follows the adventures of three heroes as they race against time to stop an ancient and eldritch evil from wreaking havoc on an unsuspecting world.

Thanks everyone, and I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts ~

Bekki Leber (primaimperatrix) I'm already in love. The time period. The similarity to "The Mummy" movie, which I adored as a kid. All of it. I'm definitely looking forward to this going on sale.

I will read the excerpt and give you some feedback on Inkshares soon.

Byron | 64 comments I watched "The Mummy" well over a dozen times a week when I was a little kid - it's such an underappreciated flick. Certainly had a big impact on my work for "Darkest Places."

James Rasile | 4 comments I've read what you've uploaded and really enjoy it so far! Can't wait to read more and looking forward to the pre-order stage!

Christopher Huang (christopher_huang) | 73 comments Ooh, the roaring 20s!

Hi. Mine's set in the same period, too, though with less eldritch evil. I'll have to take a look.

I wholeheartedly agree. I was dreaming up Indiana Jones/Mummy crossover stories when I was a kid even before I knew that crossover fanfiction was a thing! Considering that Dr. Jones and the O'Connells were both running around Egypt in the 1930s, I always imagined them running into each other on a hunt for the same artifact.

Byron | 64 comments Yes! Which is exactly what I love about this story - I have 3 POV characters, and each embodies a different archetype of the pulp-adventure genre.

Wonderful! I'm currently focused on my fantasy novel "Children/Forest" so this is taking a back-seat. I'm basically cultivating the page in the hopes of a future contest with Inkshares or one of their partners for "Horror."

I will still try to post updates from time to time - I do enjoy breaking up work on my other book with small forays into "Darkest Places." I'm hoping to find the time to touch up the 2nd chapter and post it, perhaps by the end of next week.

Bekki Leber (primaimperatrix) I think this would qualify for anything with historical fiction as well, so don't rule that out.

Sounds like you have a similar strategy to me in the putting future projects up to give them time to slowly build a following. After going through one campaign I realized that giving it time to build before hitting that launch button was the best idea. I'm also with you on wanting a Horror contest. I have no horror projects personally, but I love the genre (especially if one starts getting all cosmic/Lovecraftian) and each contest has brought some great content to my attention. I'd love to find the hidden horror gems lurking out there.
