MAUREEN (devildocmom) | 13 comments I realize this is not what catches everyone's eye when they read this book about an Alaskan author's difficulty growing up in the Tlingit community, but I was envious of the food she mentioned...halibut cheeks (a real treat I rarely see where I live) and the fresh salmon...I understand the poverty when she was going to bring what to her was a treat (cereal) to a white child's birthday party, but she had rich experiences and love also. Her story has quite a bit of anecdotal information discussing the unemployment, prejudice, alcoholism, and poverty she and members of her community faced.

I am amazed by authors...sometimes in a book I will try to think of what I would do with the rest of the book and my mind is blank. I guess that is why there are readers...:)

Anne Egbert | 11 comments Just finished Winterdance The Fine Madness of Running the Iditarod, by Gary Paulsen. Loved it. So much fun, but with a darkness. Now, for a complete change of pace I am reading Seraphina, the YA fantasy novel by Rachel Hartman. Really enjoying it also.

Kate Rich | 1 comments Earlier this month I read My Family and Other Animals, by Gerald Durrell, a book that might appeal to fans of Annie Dillard (Pilgrim at Tinker Creek), as there's lots of up-close descriptions of the natural world, or fans of James Thurber, as there's lots of anecdotes about individual members of an eccentric family being eccentric. By the end of the book, though, I was as sick of reading details about bugs as I was of this family's relentlessly charming quirks. Could be I am just being grouchy, though. There are some very funny parts.
