I'm so with you on the romance thing. UGH. I don't really remember the romance in that one all that well (usually if its bad, I just try to ignore it) but I do remember the ending to that book is KICK ASS!!! lol!

I haven't had loads of time for reading the last few days, but I did finish Conspiracy of Blood and Smoke (Prisoner of Night and Fog, #2) by Anne Blankman and I really liked it, especially the ending!

Also finished The Winner's Kiss (The Winner's Trilogy, #3) by Marie Rutkoski today at the pool. I ended up loving it, but it was a strange final read for me. I loved the beginning, but the middle really dragged for me. The last third of the book was amazing though, so it made up for it! LOVED the ending :)

I think my next physical book will be Horde (Razorland, #3) by Ann Aguirre

Just finished The Fireman by Joe Hill . Definitely my kind of story!

Should finish up Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys and A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #1) by Sarah J. Maas soon. Not sure yet what I'll be reading next.

Brigid ✩ | 738 comments @Oda - Aww, sorry you lost interest in TASU. Hope you like it more if you pick it up again. ;)

@David - That's so exciting!! Keeping my fingers and toes crossed for you. :D And yeah I was not crazy about the second and third books in the Penryn series. I loved the first book––and then I'm not sure if my taste changed or the sequels were just not as good, but I wasn't as invested in them as I was in the first one. And yeah, part of the reason for me was that the romance got too clichéd for my taste. I liked them together in book one, but after that I felt like their relationship was underdeveloped.

Thanks SO MUCH!!! I'll join you in the finger and toe crossing (not literally, that could get uncomfortable after a while). I finished End of Days and thought the plot was cool and action-packed, though it also felt really random sometimes. But yeah, the cliché romance really ruined it for me. Book one was a stand out, the other two not so much. Oh well, back to Heroes of Olympus! LOL

message 768: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (pickyreader1) | 1925 comments I was not as disappointed with the Angelfall sequels as I thought I would be. lol
I ended up enjoying both book 2 and book 3- granted, not as much as I loved book 1.
Well I finished The Hidden Oracle (The Trials of Apollo, #1) by Rick Riordan as a buddy read, and Ice Like Fire (Snow Like Ashes, #2) by Sara Raasch before that. I read Every Exquisite Thing by Matthew Quick just recently in two days.
AND I HAVEN'T DONE REVIEWS FOR ANY OF THEM. Ugh, I'm so behind. Should I even bother? :P

Oh, and best of luck to you David on your new series.

message 769: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 738 comments @David - Haha! And it might make it a little hard to type. ;) Yeah I agree––it had an action-packed plot, but it was kind of all over the place. Hope you enjoy Heroes of Olympus!

@Daniel - If it makes you feel better, I think there are about 60 books on my "to-review" list. I used to review every book I read, but during college I fell WAY behind. Now I'm like ... two years behind in reviews, lol. :P

message 770: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 738 comments Yesterday I finished:

The Secret History by Donna Tartt

I really enjoyed it! It's pretty weird and unsettling, and basically all of the characters are horrible people, but I liked the writing style and the story––for the most part, anyway. There were a few little things that bugged me towards the end. Otherwise, really good.

Now I'm about a third of the way through:

Dorothy Must Die (Dorothy Must Die, #1) by Danielle Paige

Hmmm. So far I'm not liking it as much as I hoped I would. Conceptually, it's really cool; I like the idea of this weird dystopian, post-apocalyptic version of Oz. But I don't like the writing very much and I feel like it's falling into a lot of clichés. I'm hoping it will get better as it goes along!

message 771: by Catherine (new)

Catherine Bruno | 771 comments Started A Gathering of Shadows. It's a bit slow going, but I'm sticking with it because I liked ADSOM so much, plus I heard the ending of this one is good.

Brigid ✩ | 738 comments I was a little disappointed in AGoS; I really liked ADSoM, but the second one felt a bit slow for me, as you said. I felt like the pace didn't pick up until over halfway through the book. The end is really intense though, and I'm still planning to read book three when it comes out!

You are absolutely right! It is all about Blue. She wasn't one of my favorite characters, and maybe that's why I didn't care for the book so much. On rereads, Ronan is my favorite (but I absolutely hated him the first time I read it). Throughout the series, there was never a character that I truly liked, and I find that odd since I absolutely adore the series.....maybe that's why I like it, since the characters are incredibly flawed.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. The next time I reread it, I'll go into it knowing it's all about Blue and hopefully I'll like it more.

message 775: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 738 comments Huh that's interesting Elora––one of my favorite things about the series is the characters. I love them so much! They definitely all have realistic flaws, but I love them dearly nonetheless. Ronan is my favorite too. I used to not care about Blue that much, but I like her a lot more after re-reading the books. She feels very believable to me in a way––like, she knows she's kind of pretentious when it comes to being "quirky" but she just owns it. And I also like how funny and witty she is. :D

I do love how each relationship/friendship seems to be a character of its own. Maybe that's the reason I don't love any of the characters on their own, but that I appreciate who they are together and the different dynamics they all bring to each other.
As for her wittiness, the scene where the guy makes a comment about her legs and she goes off on a rant is one of my favorites in the series. :)

Today I read Promises of London A Short Story by Hugh Howey which I just didn't quite get, but was very well written.

Also finished The Rose & the Dagger (The Wrath & the Dawn, #2) by Renee Ahdieh which I ADORED! Loved, loved, loved this book, and really didn't want to leave this world! This one was twice as good as the first book for me!

Next I'm reading Squire (Protector of the Small, #3) by Tamora Pierce and Spectrum by Kay Kadinger

It took me about halfway through before I got into Dorothy Must Die. The last half flew by, tons of action and it was just overall CREEPY. The sequel was also pretty good. But you're right, its not the best writing ever, and I think the reason for its popularity is the twist it takes on Oz. The concept is really good! I do think it has more hype than it maybe deserves.

That's good to hear about the second and third Angelfall books. I almost bought them last week because I really loved the first one when I read it but didn't because of so many reviews I saw that were pretty meh about them.

message 786: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 738 comments @Elora - That's true, maybe it's the relationships/friendships that bring out the best qualities in all of them. :) I also love that part, and in general I love how Blue is so unapologetically feminist and is never afraid to call people out on being sexist.

@David and Jenny - I'm like halfway through Dorothy Must Die now, and yeah ... it's still just okay in my opinion, but I agree Jenny that the pace does pick up a little. And it is very creepy and the world-building is pretty cool! I think you're right though that probably its popularity is mostly due to the fact that it's Oz-related.
