On the Southern Literary Trail discussion

Sure, this is a Moderator's Choice. But this is William Styron! So kick off your discussion of Lie Down in Darkness here.

Having read the first ten pages, the skill that Styron possessed at the age of 22 when he wrote this work amazes me. His portrait of Milton Loftis at the age of 55 or so after he has lost his daughter is striking in that what one feels is important in youth becomes unimportant later. The regret he feels over past actions is overwhelming as well as the youthful indiscretions he makes by not listening to his father.

The description of the voyage from Port Warwick to Richmond that opens the novel is quite good as well.

I read 4 pages last night before bed, and have to agree with Joey. It's almost unbelievable that such a young man possessed such talent. The train voyage that opens the novel is a work of art in itself. Needless to say, can't wait to get back to this today. Fortunately, I'm on vacation this week, but staying home. Guess what I'll be doing?
