Horror Aficionados discussion

4/15/2016 we'll be jumping back into the ninth book of our Stephen King Challenge. As always, anyone is welcome to join in. The more, the merrier. With that being said, who's in?

I just got this book

I'm ready!

I'm in for it :)

I read this 2 years ago, but it was good.

This is one I haven't gotten around to, so I am in.

Not a bad start. Who else wants in??

I got started and read the first 15% so far. (view spoiler)[ Fascinated by the idea of the different telekinetic powers they have. Hoping to learn more about the experiment and what that meant. (hide spoiler)] Anybody else get started?

If I hadn't just re read this, I absolutely would have joined. This is one of my favorites of his. The climax and ending are perfect (and the rest is far from shabby, too).

Starting this one tomorrow.

ok I finished this one and forgot to post it. it was just ok to me. not bad, just ok.

I finished and enjoyed it. 5 stars for me.

I've often felt that Firestarter, along with The Dead Zone, don't get enough praise and are often overlooked among King's earlier works.

I agree, Ken. I felt like both were well written. I should have read those long before now!

I think it gets unfairly lumped as a watered down version of Carrie. There's no doubt that he was into telekinesis in the late 70s/early 80s, but I think it holds its own really well while exploring many new avenues - shadowy government agency, Big Brother paranoia, unethical government medical experiments, all while this father and daughter are running like rats to escape.

That is unfair! I feel each of those are their own stories with very different main characters, even with some slight similarities.

I would agree with that.

I agree! I can't remember details of it now, but I remember finding The Dead Zone hard to put down, and loving Firestarter for the writing and flow of the story. Same for Cujo. I find all three underrated.

I would be interested too in picking back up, but I need to finish a couple of other reads I've started before I could join along.

It is indeed Roadwork. I also have a couple of other reads to get through. Would any of you be interested in starting this back up, say July 15th?

I don't want to read every SK, but Cujo, Christine and Cycle of the Werewolf are on my list of should reads. I've been looking forward to the read-a-long to be able to kick me into getting to some of the SK's I haven't gotten to yet.
