I only have read the unabridged. The abridged version I saw was about 300 pages. Compared to the 1400 or so for the unabridged, I cannot imagine the experience is quite as fulfilling.
Argh! The stupid Goodreads app and my quick response without looking closer has thrown this whole discussion off. I thought we were talking about Les Mis! Sorry! *embarrassed*
The only version I have read is the abridged and I do plan to read the unabridged this summer worth the group to see the difference. Even though it was the abridged version, it is still my favorite book.

I'm reading the original because from what I have read the new version isn't unabridged in the traditional sense, it was actually a situation where he went back years later and restored some cut material but also wrote new things to add into the story which weren't even a consideration when he originally wrote the book and he changed the dates and settings or something along those lines. I won't say more until we start reading. It'll he interesting to see what differences come up!

I thought it would be cool if there was a version where the differences were highlighted with notes in the margins.

After completing the unabridged version, my vote lies firmly in the abridged over unabridged column.

Thanks for the link - it is an interesting thing to think about. They are both very different but also definitely the same book. Hmmmmmm
