Marie (marie123) | 50 comments I'm looking for books that have deaf or hard of hearing characters portrayed realistically. As in: no magical fixes, or unreasonable lip-reading skills. I enjoyed Five Flavors of Dumb and St. Nacho's.
I am always happy with romance, but I would also love to read fantasy if there are any options out there!
Thank you!

Bec (beco7) | 22 comments I thought The Raging Quiet was good. There's no magical fix or lip-reading. It's a historical with a young man who is assumed by the local villagers to be mad or possessed by demons when he's actually just deaf and acts oddly because he's never been able to communicate with people and never understood why he's not like them or why they treat him so badly. There's romance too!

Trillian | 77 comments Deafening by Frances Itani a Canadian novel about a deaf woman before and during WW1 and her romance with a man and their letters to each other.

Pamela Love | 1509 comments If books for children are okay, Apple Is My Sign by Troy Howell fits. Apple Is My Sign

message 6: by Yue (new)

Yue | 135 comments I like this kind of thread after watching a tv show with a deaf MC that communicate thru sign language. So far I've only read Signs.

Nente | 67 comments Check out Deaf Sentence by David Lodge. He makes fun of it, but as he's hard of hearing himself he probably has the right.

Streamofhope | 4 comments Can we also try to find books with just hard of hearing protagonists?

message 9: by Anna (new)

Anna | 505 comments City of the Dead by Tony Abbott City of the Dead
Soundless by Richelle Mead Soundless in my opinion this one isn't really good but I thought it wouldn't hurt to mention it anyway.

Amy (Other Amy) | 198 comments It's the horror side of fantasy, but I loved the deaf shipmate in Rolling in the Deep.

J.S. (jsedge) | 57 comments I haven't read it yet but it's in my tbr list, sounds good and fits your request: Whisper by Chrissie Keighery x

Pamela Love | 1509 comments A supporting character in the children's novel A Drowned Maiden's Hair by Laura Amy Schlitz fits. A Drowned Maiden's Hair

message 17: by Scott (new)

Scott Unspeakable by Graham Masterton is a good thriller.

message 18: by Ann-Karin (new)

Ann-Karin (aktl) | 6 comments Contemporary Romance:
"Tall, Tatted and Tempting (The Reed Brothers #1)" and "Smart, Sexy and Secretive (The Reed Brothers #2)" by Tammy Falkner
"Silence" by Ashley McNiel

Highlander Romance:
"Moon Craving (Children of the Moon #2)" by Lucy Monroe. Yes, it's book #2 in the series, and you should probably read #1 first.

Fiction:
"The Fifth Vertex (The Sigilord Chronicles #1)" by Kevin Hoffman

I've also read a sci-fi with a deaf main character, but she could read lips a little too easily, and due to the alien technology she had a "miracle" sergery that fixed her hearing at the end of the book. If you would like to check it out all the same: "Merrick's Maiden (Cosmos' Gateway #5)" by S.E. Smith

Is it only deaf/HH you are looking for, or also books where the main character is mute? If so I know a few of those also :-)

I just wanted to come back around and mention that I just finished this book and it was pretty good! Thank you for the recommendation on that one, it was perfect.

I am definitely going to check these out. I'm mostly interested in the deaf/HH category, but if you have some mute ones that you'd highly recommend I would check them out as well!
