If you watch the movie he was on a boat with the tiger BUT when the people came and asked him they didn't believe him when he told them so he told them he was the tiger and they believed him.

I believe it was a metaphor. He was the tiger, his mother the ape & so on. It was too painful to talk about so he had created that story replacing people with animals.
