If you are writing any book about the end of the world, what you are really writing about is what's worth saving about it.
~Justin Cronin

Dystopian/Post Apocalyptic novels are very popular these days. This challenge encourages you to get a creativity, read some books, and have a bit of fun by creating your own apocalypse survival story.

The Survive your own Apocalypse Challenge
Created by Laura
(person with initial concept and who created the majority of the challenge), Lisarenee, Sonia and Jex

Duration
The duration of this challenge is up to you depending on the level of difficulty you choose to make it. If using the standard step method, then six months should suffice if you plan on one month for every step of the challenge. If you wish to create a detailed story it could last a year or more. If it inspires a book, well, who's to say how long it will take? Just make sure to let us know because we'd be tickled to hear it.

Levels of Play:
On a Wing and a Prayer; Read 1 - 3 books
Girl Scout Ready/Boy Scout Prepared; Read 4 - 6 books
Survival of the Fittest; Read 7 - 9 books
Master of Disaster; Read 10 or more books

Rules of the Game
◈ Read-It; Read apocalypse novels (perhaps mixing and matching different aspects of stories together into your own disaster story if you still want to create a story)
◈ Cover-It; Use covers to tell the tale for you
◈ Quote-It; Use quotes from your books to describe people, places, and/or events. Just make sure to include the title and author somewhere.
◈ Create-A-Story; Create a story using a combinations of the above (covers, titles, quotes, etc.)
◈ Step-By-Step; Use steps to plot out the events of an apocalypse--the before, during, and after. You don't necessarily have to create a story and can choose which steps you'll use or add new ones.
◈ Spell-It-Out;

Step One:
Disaster has struck! The world is in chaos and you are now on a quest to create a new world and survive chaos. Choose a disaster/catastrophic event from the list below and read a book that features that event.
(view spoiler)

Step Two:
Choose where you were when disaster struck. This can be a town, state, or country. Read a book that is set in this location.

Step Three:
You are pretty resourceful, you can opt to rescue yourself or to have someone (perhaps your favorite book character) save you from peril. Choose a hero, heroine, or yourself by reading a book featuring your favorite hero, heroine, or a character who shares your name or that was written by an author who shares your name. You can also do this one as a Spell-It-Out of their or your name.

Step Four:
As with most disasters, the area you are in is now may be uninhabitable or much different from what it once was. You may choose somewhere safe that you wish to now live (think space travel or perhaps move to a magical realm) or choose a book which depicts how the world has changed (think dystopian/post apocolyptic stories). Read a book set in your new world. This can be a fantasy land or a real place (Perhaps not all of earth was affected).

Step Five:
You have now developed some special abilities. Read a book that showcases your special abilities.

Step Six:
You have now found other people with unique abilities and formed a team of five. You can name your team and read a book that spells out the name of that team or you can choose four books that feature each of your fellow team members (you have already read one about yourself).

*As with most of our challenges, you can choose to do a spell it out of any of the six steps in the challenge.

Possible writing prompt for the challenge:
(Feel free to use it, change, add to it or create your own)

For centuries there have been prophecies of the end of time. The bible declares it will come like a thief in the night when you least expect it. Some thought it would come with the dawn of the year 2000. Some thought it would come with the end of the Mayan calendar, but there is one prophecy that was predicted but silenced over the years and it resides in a vault in the Vatican. It was kept so secret that its origins have been lost forever and only the first name of the one who foretold of the events is known--Laura. It came to be called Laura's Legacy and some believe she was sent by God with the hope that the foretelling of such events could stop them. Still others believe that anyone who could prophesi such heinous events must have been cursed and sent to heighten our fears. For with only the mere whisper of what the prophecy contains, the bravest of the brave will tremble and cry in despair.

According to the legend, the world as we know it will end in a series of horrorific events that will be drawn out over (you fill in) years. Society will fall under its hold and fear, horror, and despair will reign supreme. Amidst the aftershocks of the apocalypse, the key to mankind's survival will be found. That is if mankind can find it in time...

Good Luck and congratulations on surviving an apocalypse!

Thanks Laura for coming up with this one. Thanks Lisarenee for putting it all together.

For the "Rules of the Game", am I to follow each one or can I pick just one & follow it's description?

Does each "Rule" have to be a different book?

For "Step One", it says to choose a disaster/ catastrophic event from the list below... Where's that list exactly?

Am I able to use the "Cover-It Rule" for one of the steps?

Does each step of the "Step-by-Step" need to be a different book?

Thank you ☺

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments Hey you all!

Sorry it took so long on answering. This challenge was started back in the day Laura, Jex and Lisarenee were all still mods for NBRC. Meaning, to answering I had to read all over again, and set some ruling of my own, hopefully, it will not go against the initial concept.

Anyway, time for answers!

You can do both. You can also made a story using titles, or images, or parts of the book. Or even made up a completely different story and use books somehow.

Mix and match all options as you desire :)

You can pick just one. Or as many as you like. You can also mix them - for example, do a step-by-step using spell-it-out.

Does each "Rule" have to be a different book?

Yes. A book can be used only once through the challenge.

You can use same universe more than once when reading books from the same series, but not repeat books.

For "Step One", it says to choose a disaster/ catastrophic event from the list below... Where's that list exactly?

Is under the spoiler tag (for saving space and keep challenge clearer) below step one.

Here's the list:

Avalanches
Earthquakes
Volcanic eruptions
Hydrological disasters
Floods
Limnic eruptions
Tsunami
Meteorological disasters
Blizzards

Am I able to use the "Cover-It Rule" for one of the steps?

Yes

Does each step of the "Step-by-Step" need to be a different book?

Yes

Thank you ☺

Anytime. Hope it helped!

I forgot to tell in the other post, welcome to the group! :)

Also, this group can seem a bit intimidating at first glance, so, we advice all our members to first read our welcoming post (link -- here) - it has a small explanation of our main areas around, so you can get the feel of things and explore your favorite interests first.

Anyway, about the use of books already read: Main goal of a reading challenge is to find a fun way of motivating reading and help us make a dent on our ever growing to read list. So, using already read books goes a little against the goal. The challenge was posted on April 19th, so, if you want, you can backtrack to April 1st, and use books read from that date on.

*Will probably use a variety of the steps...or I might create my own story...maybe both, just not sure yet. =)

Step One:
Disaster has struck! The world is in chaos and you are now on a quest to create a new world and survive chaos. Choose a disaster/catastrophic event from the list below and read a book that features that event.

E -
A - The Awakening - 5/13
R - Ruby Red - 5/13
T - The Time Machine - 5/13
H -
Q - Questions Of Trust - 5/29
U -
A - Argo: How the CIA & Hollywood Pulled Off the Most Audacious Rescue in History - 5/20
K -
E -
S - Snow Flower and the Secret Fan - 5/8
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See Ruby Red (Precious Stone Trilogy, #1) by Kerstin Gier The Time Machine by H.G. Wells The Awakening (The Vampire Diaries, #1) by L.J. Smith Argo How the CIA & Hollywood Pulled Off the Most Audacious Rescue in History by Antonio J. Mendez Questions Of Trust by Sam Archer

Step Two:
Choose where you were when disaster struck. This can be a town, state, or country. Read a book that is set in this location.

New York City - Jinx - 6/1

Thanks!:-). Great challenge, by the way!!

Duration May 2016 -
Level of Play: Master of Disaster; Read 10 or more books

I'd like to use a combination of Create-A-Story & Step-By-Step, if that's okay?

◈ Create-A-Story; Create a story using a combinations of:
-Read-It; Read apocalypse novels (perhaps mixing and matching different aspects of stories together into your own disaster story if you still want to create a story)
-Cover-It; Use covers to tell the tale for you
-Quote-It; Use quotes from your books to describe people, places, and/or events. Just make sure to include the title and author somewhere.
and
◈ Step-By-Step; Use steps to plot out the events of an apocalypse--the before, during, and after. You don't necessarily have to create a story and can choose which steps you'll use or add new ones.

Kay Kay | 1794 comments Here I Go:

Step one I will use the Read It Option.
Not sure what I will read yet!

Book 1 The Giver
June 12, 2116
Every day in my home village is comfortingly routine. I have just finished raising the children and they have moved on to their own family units. I will now be moving to the Area for Childless Adults because I am no longer Raising Children. Thankfully I will not need to pack anything because everything I need will be in my newly assigned location. I will be taking the space of a woman who was just released. At least I can still be useful in my role as a community scribe, writing down interactions between Dr. Sheldon and his patients. It is nice to live in a community where everything is the same for everyone. What a burden it would be if we had to regulate ourselves and be paralyzed by choices. Every day for me is the same; dress, walk to the office, document the interaction of the Dr. and his patients, log them into the computer, walk home, have dinner, relax on the porch or take a walk, and then go to bed. The perfect life!

Step Two Book Two Location The Death House
I must admit that I am a bit worried about the upcoming winter though. They can be a bit brutal her on our own island, and now that I am moving to the area for Childless Adults I hope they keep us warm enough. I don't want anything to interrupt my little utopia until I too am ready to be released. I know that if I bring it up to Dr. Sheldon or any of the other adults in my unit I will be told not to worry, it goes against our teachings and I might need to be sent away to be reeducated. It would also put me on a watch list to see if my release date would need to be moved up. For now I will stay quiet and hope we are kept warm this winter!

Step Three My Hero! Among the Hidden
Unfortunately I was right and we are not getting heat or food this winter. It seems that the families are getting all that they need, but the childless adults are being neglected. Some of my roommates seem to be slowly starving to death yet no one complains. As I walk to work in the morning I am sure that I see the curtains twitch in one of the family houses where I am pretty sure that everyone should be off to work, and just yesterday there was a bowl of warm stew left on the path to Dr. Sheldon's office! Oh how good that stew tasted, and it warmed me up. I wonder who is behind the curtains and leaving out food for me. I'm not sure, but I am grateful for their kindness and generosity.

I'll update this post when I've decided on a plan. I think I'm going to just do a Spell-It-Out. Trying to read and understand the other options is making my head feel like it's going to explode. ;-)

So I am going to spell out all of the SPACE DISASTERS: IMPACT EVENTS -- SOLAR FLARES -- GAMMA RAY BURST. :-)

Survive Your Own Apocalypse Challenge

Start Date: 01/06/2016

Level of Play: Master of Disaster (10+ Books)

◈ the first letter in the author's, translator's or narrator's first or last name

Step One:
Disaster has struck! The world is in chaos and you are now on a quest to create a new world and survive chaos. Choose a disaster/catastrophic event from the list below and read a book that features that event.

I am going to start with
Snowblind 05/06/2016

Step Two:
Choose where you were when disaster struck. This can be a town, state, or country. Read a book that is set in this location.

I am going to set this on Fox Glacier which is in New Zealand

In the Land of the Long White Cloud 01/07/2016

The Last Dragonslayer 29/08/2016

Step Five:
You have now developed some special abilities. Read a book that showcases your special abilities.

Steelheart 02/09/2016 Epic with illusion characteristics

Step Six:
You have now found other people with unique abilities and formed a team of five. You can name your team and read a book that spells out the name of that team or you can choose four books that feature each of your fellow team members (you have already read one about yourself).

X books? I can think of two: XVI by Julia Karr and Xenocide by Orson Scott Card. Then there's Xenocide by Larry Kollar and The Xenocide Mission by Ben Jeapes.

Maybe one of them appeals? Hope that helps! :-)

Shanna_redwind | 598 comments I'm not positive this is how I'm supposed to do this? Is it ok?

Ok, this is it I thought to myself "Sadie Walker is Stranded Above. I glanced back to where The Wall had been tightly secured against the coming devastation. Everyone I knew was safe in their Subterranean shelter and I was left out here with only The Burnouts who either hadn't wanted to be go into the shelters, or who hadn't been allowed.

If only I had been a little sooner. If only I hadn't been Healing Luke. And he hadn't even survived. I'd had to try though, and for a time it had actually looked like he might pull through and we'd be able to make it back to The Wall together. But he had died and left me alone, crossing The Silent Sea without me, and leaving me only his body on the now Scarlet ground.

It seemed like only days ago that we'd been warned about the asteroid that was Crossing the Deep of space though it had actually been two months. The government had known for much longer, and had built these shelters as well as star ships to evacuate where the asteroid would actually hit. The ships are Destination Unknown and I really hope they had a plan.

I shook my head, for there was nothing I could do for the ships. This is Not a Game and if I was to survive I needed to concentrate.
